I know, I know, it is about time a new interview appeared :)
Well at long last, here is my interview with 'The Professor' Grady Mathews:

Great interview! Enjoyed every paragraph. I'm confused over one thing about Jersey Red vs. Ronnie Allen:

"I watched some of the great matches that Ronnie would play. He played Jersey Red and Red was a real warrior. Ronnie could beat Red getting 9 to 8 but Ronnie couldn’t give him 8-7. That’s the way they played."

If Ronnie beat Red getting 9-8, it seems that the next step on Red's part would be to play even. Why would Ronnie try to give him 8-7? Was Ronnie beating Red playing even as well?

DocI think it is meant that Ronnie gave Red 9-8, or 8-7 -- in both cases that was Ronnie spotting Red a ball, although it came out sounding otherwise :)

Yea, That's what I got out of it too Steve. I have had the same situation giving someone 8/5+the break and losing. Then changing it to 9/6+the break, and winning!:D......all in the same day!.......I guess one ball didn't make too much difference for me, but it did for him...

Ah so... That makes more sense. I saw a similiar situation back in '69 in L.A. between RA and Eddie Kelly. Although I believe it was Eddie who was giving Ronnie 9-8, but couldn't give him 8-7. Eddie went on to win the World Championship Pocket Billiards Tournament (14.1) that year.
