--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just finished editing and uploading 55 photos I took 20 years ago at the Clyde Childress Memorial Pool Tournament. They are available for your viewing pleasure at this link: http://billporter.smugmug.com/gallery/1388452

I suggest you try the "slideshow" option by clicking on "Slideshow" in the light colored bar just above the photos. You can set the duration of the photos (the default setting is 3 seconds per photo).

I have not yet labeled the photos, but you might see how many you recognize. I believe Efren had been in this country only a few months at the time of the tournament.

You can purchase prints from the site (Smugmug), but I want you to know that I make nothing from such purchases. Smugmug is simply charging you for the prints.

Have fun!

Something about the setting for a couple of your photos looked familiar to me from another photo -- I figured out why it looks familiar. Take a look at the picture Grady sent me a while back, and your pic taken from nearly the same angle. Are these the same place, different times??

Your pic:

Grady's pic (obviously he didn't take it -- he's in it):

Yes, I believe it was taken in the same room several years later. Freddy sent me the same pic (after I sent him the one you refer to in my gallery on Smugmug). Here is Freddy's description of the photo he sent me:

"Here is a companion Photo. This was Lexington, 89 I think. I am playing Mike Shoes Gambony. He is in your pic, along with Grady, Lebron, Efren etc.
Freddy"

There were some great games played in that room. There were two tables in the room and both were usually seeing action.

Regards,
Bill Porter

My friend Herb Wandrei took that pic, I sure would like to know who passed it around. I know I sent Freddie that pic over the internet months ago. Herb has the negative with the dates on the sleeve!!!

Herb has the negative with the dates on the sleeve!!!I'm guessing Herb gave Grady a copy, for use in his exhibition -- Powerpoint slide show on the history of pool -- Grady style. He has quite a few old photos, which he shows while he adds his unique and colorful commentary. He lent me about 4-5 photos from that presentation (this one included), which are on the History of One Pocket (http://onepocket.org/history.htm) page here on OnePocket.org. I would be happy to add his name as a photo credit. And pass along a thank you from me as well! Plus, of course I would like to see more of his photos!!

Remember Freddie...we talked about it. I said it was Dayton and you "TOLD" me it was the Clyde in '86, LOL. I will ask Herb if he has anymore he is willing to share with all of us. I also know that the pics of Gus Szamboti working were taken by him, they have been used over an over again as well.

I can't comment on the photos but... The 1986 Childress tournament was in Lexington. I remember this because I was home on leave from the military getting ready to go to Japan. There's one photo in the slideshow that has the Miz playing Dave Bollman. It may be coincidence but I remember watching these 2 playing because there was a small argument. Bollman called a cheap foul on Mizerak and The Miz questioned Bollmans friendship or integrity. It wasn't much, but it's all that really stands out in my memory. The 86 tournament was the only one that I had the chance to go to because of the Military.I was in Japan from 86-89. The only tournaments that happened around Lexington from 89 on were run by Danny Beile (sp). He had the Lexington All-Star tournaments. I'm not sure when Danny started running his tournaments, but know that Monroe was killed in 1987. I don't know if Greg Sullivan had anything to do with the All-Star tournaments other than providing the tables. This is around the time that the Diamond Pro was introduced... Hope this helps.

Sliprock, do you know anything about Toby Kavanaugh's room in Lexington? He supposedly was a good friend of Walter Tevis'. Evidently in "The Hustler", Tevis used Toby as a model for the character of "Findley" (a southern gentleman gambler who played 3C billiards). Reportedly I guess Kavanaugh was killed in his home in '94, but I don't know if the poolroom is still there. Do you have any info about that subject?

Thanks,

Doc

I can remember going into Toby's poolroom only once or twice. I think it was called Campus Biliards due to it's location close to the University of Ky. At the time, I didn't know any of the history of the place. I had just started playing and was pretty green. One of my best friends grew up in Lexington and practically lived in Toby's, He has a ton of stories. I'll have to give him a pop quiz the next time I see him. I think that Toby's building is still there but it's no longer a pool room. Toby was beaten to death in his home with a baseball bat. I don't think that anyone was ever prosecuted for his death.

As far as the Tevis link. I've heard that Tevis was from Kentucky and is buried somewhere around Richmond which is only about 25 minutes from Lexington. I don't know if Toby was his inspiration but I guess that it's very possible.

You've really piqued my interest. The next time that I go to Lexington I'll have to ask some of the old-timers. There's a few there that have been hanging out at the poolrooms and race tracks for 60+ years. I'll keep you in mind if I can find out anything.

Thanks for the reply, Sliprock. The subject came to my attention through reading a caption in one of Eddie Robin's books. There was an insinuation that Toby was a degenerate gambler who invited questionable types to his home to play. Perhaps that might have led to his demise. Supposedly he and Tevis were good friends though. I think It's pretty common knowledge that Tevis was a heavy drinker.

I was in Campus Billiards to buy a pool table back around 77-80 time frame. The owner was a Brunswick dealer and we went to another location to pick up the table. Don't know if that was Kavanaugh however.

Walter Tevis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walter Stone Tevis (February 28, 1928 - August 8, 1984) was an American author. He was born in San Francisco.

His father, a Madison County native, brought his family back to Kentucky from San Francisco when Walter Tevis was ten years old.

After serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II, Tevis graduated from Model High School in 1945 and entered the University of Kentucky. While a student there, Tevis worked in a pool-room and published a story about pool written for A. B. Guthrie's writing class. After being awarded a Masters degree from the University, Tevis wrote for the Kentucky Highway Department and taught school in Science Hill, Hawesville, Irvine, Carlisle, and then at the University of Kentucky.

He was an English literature professor at Ohio University (in Athens, OH) from 1965 to 1978, where he received an MFA. He wrote seven novels, three of which were the basis of major motion pictures of the same names: The Hustler (1959), and The Color of Money (1984)—both about fictional poolhall hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson—and the science fiction novel The Man Who Fell to Earth (1963). He also wrote Mockingbird (1980), Far From Home (1981), The Steps of the Sun (1983), and The Queen's Gambit (1983).

He was a nominee for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1980 for Mockingbird.

He spent his last years in New York as a full-time writer.

Walter Tevis died of lung cancer in 1984. He was buried in Richmond, Kentucky.

Have fun!
Here's a thread that I'm guessing nobody has looked at in awhile. As an aside on Clyde Childress: The first time I ever walked into the Rack Clyde was playing Paul Brusloff $4000 per game one-pocket on the snooker table. He was giving Paul 9-7. Clyde was playing shirtless as he was losing and it was a little warm in there.

Great photos Bill . Thanks for sharing.
I have seen some of the pictures I have taken on the net , never with any credit.
I guess i can live with that, the way people wholesale copy everything now , I will be surprised if I don't see them with someone elses name attached as the photographer.

Fred, this pic was taken at the Sheraton (sp)hotel In lex,ky.It is or was the same room where you were coaching Efren playing Grady onepocket.I think It was called the Clyde Childress tourny at the time.I think that Is the last place It was held.
I could be wrong about the name of tourny but that Is the hotel In the pic.The gambling rooms were off to the side.I was there too.I think they were to the left as you were walking to the tourny room.Early to mid 80s.John B.
