Thanks to several emails form One Pocket fans that have either recalled results, or poured through their old magazines, I have been gradually filling in missing One Pocket tournaments and their winners and runner-ups in our One Pocket Tournament Record Book.
In case you haven't noticed that section of our web site yet, it is located under the Hall of Fame drop-down menu, here:
http://onepocket.org/records.htm
Keep them coming! There are still quite a few significant tournaments missing, as well as many missing results. Any of you that have either great recall or a collection of old magazines -- this is your invitation to help out!
Some of the tournaments and/or results that need filling in include:
The older West coast events, both San Francisco and Los Angeles
Some of the Stardust events are still missing
Many second place finishers are missing
80's events lack completeness
Strawberry's 1992 tournament -- unsure of results
Hard Times results for the last 5 years -- some are missing
Other regional tournament results
It has been suggested that the major events should be indicated to stand out from the regional events. Once criteria can be established -- if enough is known about the actual prize fund and number and quality of contestants -- then that might be possible, with your research help!
Special thanks to those who have helped already, and thanks in advance to any of you who go on your own search mission. Ultimately I would like to see all of these results confirmed by original news reports, so they are as accurate as possible.
Ask and you shall receive! ;)
In reference to Strawberry's 1992 tournament, I am in the process of getting the complete results and payouts for you from a guy in the know here in D.C. BTW, there were two Strawberry one-pocket tournaments, I believe.
The winner of one of them is a very good friend of mine, lifelong Maryland native Tom Wirth a/k/a Tom-Tom. He's the guy on the right!

Leonard Bludworth and I had an All-Around in Tampa, FL in 1983, with One Pocket, 14.1 , Nine Ball and a Ladies division.I don't remember who won what but Rempe, David Howard and Diliberto were the division winners, I think.
I probably am forgetting two or three "Legends" events but here are the ones I recall:
1990 in Columbia, SC Hopkins the winner, Steve Cook second
1991 in Columbia, SC Shannon Dalton the winner, Steve Mizerak second
199? at the Airport Hilton, in Philly Steve Cook the winner, Mizerak second
199? at Petey's place in Philly- Sigel 1st, Bugs or Strawberry second
199? Baton Rouge Hall first, Marquez second
199? Baton Rouge Dalton 1st,
1995 Olathe Mathews 1st, Harriman second
2000 Portland, ME Varner first, Alex second
2003 Columbia, SC Frost first,
1993 Ritchie Florence and my event in Reno that we called "The Super Tournament", won by Ed Kelly with Cornbread second
1994 Roanoke, VA Bollman 1st
1995 Roanoke, VA Parice 1st Mathews second
U.S. Open events- I think there were three and it seems like Parica and Joyner won two of them.
Red's in Houston had three One Pocket championships. I won two of them, one in 83' and the other in 85'. JaySwanson and Howard Vickery finished second. I think Ronnie won the third one.
Sid Mann, in Austin, TX had two One Pocket big tournaments. I think in 84' and 85". I won one of them and I think Diliberto won the other. Sigel finished second when I won.
I don't have any of the Jonston City or Stardust results.

I'm assuming you don't have this stuff written down some where so you have one hell of a memory, Grady.
If I remember right, Jimmy Reid has the results of all of the Johnston City events, written down some where, if Steve knows how to get in touch with him. I don't.

I'm looking forward to a phone call from the current TD of the Capital City Classic tournament in D.C. He's the man with the stats. I'm going to try to steer him to this website. I'm hoping he may have a lot more data relating to one-hole statistics of the past!
When I talked to him this morning, his recollection was immediately that Tom-Tom won one of Strawberry's tourneys, but he did say that there were two Strawberry tournaments.
In doing a Google search, I found this little trinket, edited for a better read:
"In 1992, Strawberry held a one-hole tournament just outside Washington, D.C. A lot of good players. Varner defeated Sigel to win around 6 or 7 grand. Also in the field were Grady, Incardona, Bugs, Shannon, Parica, [and] a very new to the game of one-hole, Cliff Joyner."
I do know Tom-Tom, Geese, and Bus Driver Ronnie were the best one-pocket players in the D.C. area back in the '70s and '80s. Tom-Tom's best game is one-pocket, and since he recently moved back to Maryland from Florida, he's definitely making the rounds. I saw Bus Driver Ronnie the other night, and he was engaged in a friendly game of one-hole and still enjoys playing.
I know how difficult it is to locate statistics and data relating to pool from the past. There seems to be no archives or record anywhere. Much of it lies in the memories of the folks who were actually there. Bravo to OnePocket.Org for this valiant undertaking!

Howdy Steve,
I vaguely remember it as the year before cliff Joyner won it.Unfortunately the pool hall that held these tournaments went out of buisiness. By the way one time Jeff Carter from Chicago got second place.one time that this 9 Ball player Mr.Nevels from wisconcin got second place. Mr.Nevels put Efferen into looser`s bracket.Mr.Nevel won the winners bracket but only to loose to Efferen in the finals( This was the last Us Open ,sponsered by Diamond tables and was held in Radisson hotel). One time another 9Ball player and a pool room owner by name Jamie Goodwin fom Battlecreek,MI came second or third.cheers

And that's Pete Fusco on the left, correct?
The guy to the left of Tom-Tom Wirth, shown on the page 1 of this thread, shares the same name, but he's not Pete Fusco. Does kind of look like him, though!
Here's a picture I treasure. Knowing "Squirrel," the guy on the right, is known as a veteran one-pocket player, it would be great if somebody could tap into his knowlede. I love this picture, taken two DCC's ago, because of the sign behind Cornbread and Squirrel which reads "Action Room." So many great one-pocket players who may not have won a slew of big tournaments, but are known as the cream of the crop!
One of the highlights of the DCC was watching Cornbread, Squirrel, and another veteran player, Wade Crane (not pictured), playing a little one-hole on one of the back tables. They were laughing and chuckling, just having a ball!
The second Strawberry tournament occurred after the one in '92, with Tom-Tom Wirth coming in first place and Jose "Amag" Parica, the FIRST-EVER winner of the World Pool Championship AND the beginning of the Filipino Invasion, coming in second. We are still working on getting the money payouts and EXACT dates for both tournaments.
The Capital City Classic which occurred in 2002 in New Carrollton, Maryland, had a one-pocket and a 9-ball tournament. The one-pocket, again, was won by Jose Parica!
Great game = Great site.
In the "Legends of the Road" magazine series I write there is a year by year record of both all Johnston City events and all the Stardust events run by the Jansco Brothers.
Unfortunately, I don't have time at the moment to pull the results, but if anyone is searching this should make it easier --
The Johnston City stories are in Pool & Billiard Magazine beginning with July, 01 (1961) through August, 02 (1972 tournament).
The Stardust results are in P&B beginning with April, 03, running through November, 03 (1971-73 tournaments).
There are also various Legends series stories on One-Pocket players from Hubert Cokes (Nov 97) through Boston Shorty (July '99), Eddie Taylor (January and July '98), Rags Fitzpatrick (December '99), Eddie Kelly (December, '97), and other 9-Ball/One-Pocket greats. Forty-six stories so far.
I'm currently researching Richie Florence for a story that is close to completed. If you have any photos, anecdotes or information about Richie please let me know as quickly as possible. I've spoken to his family, friends, other road players, etc.

Steve, heres the U.S. Open results that I told you Id post....and by the way, just as you thought, there were five U.S. Opens in Kalamazoo (96 through 2000) - I was there and played in all of them....and with my usual sob story/tough luck drawing, the first two years (96 and 97) in the first round, I drew the number one pick in the Calcutta - namely, Jack Cooney in 96 (and by the way, people were a little surprised to see Jack show up there) and Cliff in 97. OK, Ill stop crying now. Anyway, here are the results:
In 97:
1st: Leil Gay paid $2,900
2nd: Jayme Goodwin paid $1,925
3rd: Steve Cook paid $1,400
4th: Rich Lingley dont know who the hell he is, can anybody tell us?
Bonus info for 97 - Cecil Tugwell finished 9th through 12th.
In 98: (the added money was the highest in this year)
1st: Jeremy Jones paid $6,000
2nd: Jeff Carter paid $3,250
3rd: Cliff Joyner paid $2,250
4th: Nick Varner paid $1,500
Bonus info for 98 - Gabe Owen finished 9th through 12th.
In 99:
1st: Cliff Joyner paid $4,000
2nd: Larry Nevel paid $2,500
3rd: Gary Spaeth paid $1,800
4th: Richie Richeson paid $1,500
Bonus info for 99 - Bugs Rucker finished 9th through 12th.

The OnePocket.org 'Record Book' has been updated with all of these additions. Also, a designation for Major or Regional has been added to give the Major tournaments a little special recognition -- which they deserve! At this point, the decision as to which events should be noted as Major was a bit arbitrary -- but here they are:
All the Johnston City events
All the Stardust events
All the 'Legends' tournaments
All the Derby City Classic One Pocket events
All the US Open One Pocket events
Other than that, I would need more guidance. What makes an event major? The prize fund, the quality of the field, the public recognition of the event status all probably come in to play...
If you haven't checked it out, it is available under the 'Hall of Fame' drop-down menu --> 'Record Book', here:

JAM, Wade's still playing jam-up 9 ball too. He just took 3rd in N.O. at the Pechauer event behind a sizzlin' John Schmidt and Jamie Farrell, but ahead of Tommy Kennedy. His game is very strong and methodical, and he doesn't rattle. [Ahem] Yours truly had him in the Calcutta.
Doc
It is always a pleasure to run into Wade Crane. He is a quiet, unassuming-type guy in person, but on a field of green, he is a predator. Did he buy back half of himself in the Calcutta, Doc?
I just located this new stat for the OnePocket.Org record book. On December 11-16, 1990, the Third Annual Southern California Open 9-Ball and One-Pocket Tournaments occurred at Hard Times in Bellflower, California.
Cecil Tugwell won the one-pocket, with John Vasquez coming in second. Jose Parica was third, and Keith came in fourth. An article in The Snap states: In the One-Pocket division, Cevil Tugwell continued his domination of Southern California tournaments by defeating "Mexican" Johnny Vasquez 4 to 2 in the final match. Tugwell was undefeated in the event, losing only five games in his earlier matches."
Buddy Hall won the 9-ball event, with Jose Parica coming in second.
Buddy still seems to be hitting 'em pretty sporty these days. Check out this picture of Keith and Buddy playing at the Open last year. It was the first time the polka-dot cue-ball was used at the Open, too, I might add, during their match. Keith looks in horror as he misses, leaving Buddy a little duck shot in the corner pocket. Buddy looks like he can't wait to get to the table!

Thanks for the great pic Jenny JAM. I recently got the tape to this match and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Hope Buddy's health is doing well. I met Cecil in the early 70's when he just came out of the Army. It was in Hollywood at the old Billiard Den. At that time he was a sweet right handed playing kid. Now of course he plays lefty.

Yobagua, I remember Cecil back then, too. Nobody could beat him playing one-pocket right-handed, and they had a hard time beating him playing 9-ball as well. There's one thing about Cecil that I always admired, that he knows how to play pool well, especially one-pocket. He knows all the moves.
That shot in the picture with me and Buddy, I remember it well. The reason why Buddy is laughing so hard, after I missed, I said to him, "Come on, Buddy. Can you believe that? I don't believe what that ball just did." Me and Buddy were laughing anyways in the match, playing with that polka-dotted cue-ball, and when the ball skidded, I mentioned something about the red dots and Buddy started cracking up.

Yea, I saw that match, Keith. Neither of you played your best but it was funny as hell at times. Enjoyed it a ton. Far as I know, Buddy still plays right handed Yo. He allways has been able to play well left handed though. Buddy and Dan Louie had some barn burners right and left handed.

Me and Danny grew up as kids, and I remember an incident when I flew to Burlington, Iowa. Ronnie Allen and Grady Mathews was putting on the tournament. There was a ring game, and I didn't have much money. I turned Dan Louie into a stakehorse.
Well, Danny went the distance with me, and I busted the game. Then I played Don McCoy, Mike Corella (sp), and Louie Roberts, and broke them all. And Dan Louie was in with me. ;)

Dan has a ton of heart, Keith. He also counts money as well as anyone. Yea, I done some stuff with him. Great guy. He got all the money in the south in the mid 70s. Busted Baton Rouge playing Buddy on the big table with the white bowling ball he carried in his glove compartment. No, the bowling ball had no holes in it, lol. Danny did jerk that big rock around real well. How did you and Dan play on the bar box? No one jerked that big ball around better than you did.
Went to a local room last night and ran into Tom-Tom Wirth. He said he did win the one-pocket tournament in 1993, one year after the first Strawberry tournament in '92, and Jose Parica came in second. He said he won about $6,800, somewhere in that ball park for first-place purse, and got a trophy!
They had a little one-pocket tournament at Orange Ball Billiards in Rockville, Maryland, a few weeks back, and the finals came down to Tom-Tom and Gerry Slivka.
Time was running late and Tom-Tom was asked if he wanted to just split the first-place monies with Gerry, which amounted to $1,700, I believe. Though it was late in the evening, Tom-Tom got quite irritated when he was asked by Gerry if he'd take $800 and let Gerry get $900. Tom-Tom, a very strong one-pocket player, said forget about it, that he wanted to just play the match out, then. The end result was the prize monies were cut in half, and each player received the same amount.
I'm not sure if the one-pocket tournament at Orange Ball would be considered a regional tournament, worth of inclusion in the record book, but when the money is split, how do you record who won first place?

Hey Jenny JAM! Is the great Strawberry still alive? Whats he up to? I have a few tapes of him in action.
Not too long ago, Keith was playing in a Falcon Cue Tour (now Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour) tournament in Alexandria, Virginia, and in walks Strawberry out of the blue. Dressed in some fancy duds and wearing a cap, he looked mighty dapper, sporting that infamous big grin of his. When he saw Keith was playing in the tournament, he came over to watch him play.
At the conclusion of the tournament, some folks wanted to engage in some games of stake and decided to change the venue. So we formed a caravan outside, and Strawberry was driving a brand-new 7-ball-red Cadillac SUV.
When we got to the action-friendly pool room, Strawberry and I got a chance to catch up on smut and chat a bit. He says he doesn't play too much these days, but he does enjoy sweating some good players from time to time. He is a very religious man and shared with me some of his thoughts about life in general. He seems really happy, and he and his wife have been running a business here in the D.C. area to assist the medically challenged.

Hey Jen, A couple interesting things about that '93 Tournament. It was a single elimination event and races to five, so the best player that week was sure to win. That was me! I beat Grady, Johnny Ervolino, Cliff Joyner and some others in between. I then knocked off Jose in the finals. In just about every match I played, I must have made a ball on the break two or three times, running out like water down a hill. When it was all over Jose said,
"Your break is awesome".
As you know, I was the home town guy in that Tournament. The fans were great and very supportive. I kept hearing them cheer with every game I won or great shot I made. They gave me the energy to stay focused and the determination to keep trying my hardest. I can still hear them. What a great memory for me!
See Ya soon, Tom Wirth

"Texas Tom," now that's funny! I only wish I was there at that tournament to see you make it to the winner's circle. There is nothing better than seeing the hometown guy win. It must have been thrilling!
Remember the very first time I met you, Tom? It was pre-Geese. You walked into Hank Dietle's and put you name on the list to play partners 8-ball, and not a soul knew who you were. I was a D-minus player at the time, and nobody wanted me as their partner. When your turn came up, you picked me to be your partner, and we held the table for a spell. Man, that sure was a sweet win for me. :D
I am so glad that you found this website, Tom. I wasn't sure you'd be able to maneuver yourself to get in here, but I sure am glad to see you found it. This is a great website for one-pocket discussions, and I'm sure you are going to enjoy it!
Of course, as far as the picture goes, nobody knows that you now wear a cowboy hat, lizard-skin boots, and weigh about 300 pounds. Right?
BTW, I went over to Joan's pool room in Silver Spring (Champions) the other day, and your picture is still on the wall. That pool room is a lot closer to both of us than the one in Laurel. It would be nice if we could get a monthly one-pocket tournament going there for those who enjoy the game! :)

It is always a pleasure to run into Wade Crane. He is a quiet, unassuming-type guy in person, but on a field of green, he is a predator. Did he buy back half of himself in the Calcutta, Doc?

Not much into classic muscle cars, huh, Doc, lol. 1970 & 1971 Plymouth produced the fastest, stock, straight line, accelerating production car in history. It was the light bodied Barracuda with the 426 Hemi engine in it. For short, it was called the Hemicuda. I have been lucky enough to have owned two such cars. Ala, Hemicuda(s). AzBilliards is currently adding title wins to the player's bios on their website.
The source being used is Billiards Digest and other older pool magazines. It seems that these older pool magazines is the only record of players' accomplishments as well as word of mouth from those who were there.
Under Ronnie Allen's bio, it states that he won the 1984 Red's Open, to the tune of $4,000. I noticed that you had a question mark whether it was Ronnie or Danny D.
Just a question to all: Are there any older pool magazines that go as far back as the '70s? It seems that Pool & Billiards Magazine, On the Snap, and Billiards Digest are the ones that come to my mind. Any others?
Seems like a lot of folks are attempting to gather data for record-keeping purposes, and these magazines are valuable sources. Here's a picture of Ronnie enjoying a little fishing trip in Vegas! Wow, does it look beautiful there!

Well, Hemicudas (Bill), we have something else in common besides a mutual respect for Ronnie Allen. When I was married, I traded in my own '66 GTO for a brand-new 1972 'Cuda, the car of my husband's choice. It was silver with black interior, and he very rarely would let me drive after that trade-in
When the marriage dissolved, my husband took the 'Cuda. I then went out and bought a '68 GTO and later bought a '69 GTO. I know "GTO" (gas, tires, and oil) ;) My first '66 GTO had a his-and-her shifter. My favorite GTO was the '68, green with a black convertible, Hurst 4-speed, Gabriel Hi-Jackers in the back, and Craigers on the wheels! Of course, what did gas cost back then? Maybe 50 cents a gallon? LOL! I can remember getting my gas tank filled up and receiving a FREE set of steak knives or dinner glasses. I've also got the original Sinclair dinosaur and fireman's hat!
Enjoyed seeing your car, Bill! Brings back memories... :)

I made the brilliant statement once "Gas will NEVER go over 50 cents a gallon".
Never had a Hemi or GTO but bought a new 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 w/4 spd. That was a sporty little dude. Went from it to a '71 Plymouth Sport Fury w/ 4bbl 383 hi performance. That was one fine car. Quick enough to give you a bit of a thrill but a fine smooth ride. Had power sunroof too. Used to drive aong with my head out of it. Folks look at you like yer nuts (maybe they be right  )

I believe that was the tournament at Hard Times that Cecil played Cole Dickson in one of the earlier rounds and Cecil won 4 to 3 & amost every game was eight and out with very few safties played. The session was over before some of the tables had finished their first game.

Well, first of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And may you enjoy many, many more! :)
BTW, how DO you spell Cole's last name? Is it D-i-c-k-s-o-n or D-i-x-o-n? I have seen it both ways and am just curious.
Is Cecil Tugwell still actively playing? I have recently been trying to gather some info on Cecil Tugwell, but there isn't much available. Again, most of it comes from the memories of those who were there! The story I heard, if it is really true, about how he went from being right-handed to left-handed is incredible. He also must have been, and may still be, a very good one-pocket player!

Ronnie is a real good fisherman. I'm sure he'll catch a 4- or 5-pounder for sure. I hope he doesn't tie your line like he did my line in Las Vegas. We were striper fishing, and he gave me a crappy-tie. And I had a big fish on there and lost him immediately!

Doc, when I bought a new replacement Brunswick pool table, I had forgotten that inside one of the legs of the old Brunswick, I had made a time capsule of sorts, placing in it pool stuff. When you said "Billiard News," it rang a bell and I retrieved my ONE and ONLY copy of Billiard News, dated November 1983. According to the front of the paper, it was established in 1962 by Earl Newby.
In perusing this issue, I found a new tournament result which may or may not be suitable for OnePocket.Org's record book for 1983, and it goes like this: "Billiard enthusiasts in Buffalo were treated to a fine exhibition this September 23-25 when four of the world's fineset players battled it out at Ronnie Vallone's newly refurbished Hippodrome Billiard Academy. Danny DiLiberto...invited Mike Sigel, Jim Rempe, and Dallas West to compete with him for $6,000 in prize money in the all-around tourney.
"The tournament was set up in round-robin format, so that each player competed against the other three in straight pool, nine-ball, and one-pocket, for a total of nine matches per player. When it was all over, Mike Sigel was not to be denied as he walked off with the first-place prize money and a 7-2 win-loss record. Dallas West finished secnod with a 6-3 record, followed by Rempe at 4-5 and DiLiberto at 1-8.
"One-Pocket (races to four). 1st round-West over DiLiberto, 4-2; Rempe over Sigel, 4-1. 2nd round-Sigel over West, 4-0; Rempe over DiLiberto, 4-1. 3rd round-Sigel over DiLiberto, 4-1; West over Rempe, 4-3."
Final Standings: 1st place-Mike Sigel (7-2), $2,500; 2nd place-Dallas West (6-3) $1,500; 3rd place-Jim Rempe (4-5), $1,000; and 4th place-Danny DiLiberto, (1-8), $1,000
Here's another one-pocket tourney result in the November 1983 Billiard News:
"One-Pocket. This strategic game, touted by many as requiring the most skill of any pocket billiard game (it certainly requires the most patience) had a neat field of 16 players...Danny D beat him [Earl] in the first round, but 'The Pearl" rallied his skills and beat Rempe 4-0, Cook, Breit, the famous Jersey Red, 4-1, and George Brunt 4-1 before losing to Massey 4-2.
"Mike Massey also played through the loser's bracket to place third. Although Jersey Red beat him initially, he defeated Gary Pinkowski, Joe Spano, James 'Chilly' McCrary, Howard Vickery, and Earl 'The Pearl' before his close game with Bill Stigall. Stigall was ahead 3-1 when the 'Tennessee Tarzan' tied the score, but under pressure the Floridian won the match.
"Stigall had just been beaten in a match with DiLiberto which ran constantly neck and neck. Bill was ahead 3-2 with one ball left on the table. He played a safe, but slipped out and left the New Yorker a shot on the game ball. In the next game, they were down to just a few balls left on the table and a long series of safeties when Stigall scratched and D made his game shot. In the finals, they met again, Stigall playing valiantly. The score was 2-2. D won the next game and won the safety play when Stigall missed a separate bank shot which gave D the game."
One-Pocket results (Field of 16)
Danny DiLiberto received $2,250 for first place, and Bill Stigall received $1,125 for second place.

Yeah, I guess Lil John is playing well. He snapped off the Red Rifle over in Kenner a couple weeks ago. I understand Jamie gave him 10-7, and lost; then 9-7 and lost. Strawberry's 1992 tournament (even though I was there and have the t-shirt to prove it -- damned if I remember who won.
According to the current Capital City Classic tournament director, Dennis Wilson, Mike Sigel won the '92 Strawberry tournament, with Nick Varner coming in second place.
Apparently, at the conclusion of this tournament, Mike Sigel had to leave immediately to attend another tournament and desired an all-cash payout. Dennis Wilson personally delivered the monies to Mike Sigel for his first-place win in Strawberry's tournament.
The Stardust results need to be obtained. Surely, somebody who may have attended these events (in the '60s?) may have a program or some memorabilia as a keepsake. Hopefully, through word of mouth, the right guy who was there and may KNOW what happened will report back.

Never played or saw Lil'John, but I did see Jamie up close at the DCC tournament in 2002. We play some banks and 9 ball and I got crushed. I didn't know who he was.
I watched Jamie place the 9 ball on the wing spot (using the Sardo rack) while playing on the TV table against Ralph Souquet. The 9 ball went in so fast, even Ralph was stunned. They played the game over after Scott Smith spoke with Pat Flemming about the ruling. Game starts with a legal rack. One ball at apex, 9 ball in the center. The game would have put Ralph on the hill. Jamie lost the match anyway.

Tom, Jamie is originally from Baton Rouge. He and I lived in the same little town in Illinois, Shorewood, for a few years. We both got tired of the Chicago winters and moved back south. If Jamie is in the right gear, he is capable of beating a ton of folks. He won the Professor's first ring 10 ball game. Danny Basavich can attest to that, lol. Danny lost 25 games in a row and was the first player eleminated, lol. Jamie, like Lil Jon, can get staked, REAL high. Humphrey likes Jamie's action a lot. I'm still confused about the results of the two tournaments that Dennis Wilson was apparently involved with, though. There was Pete Fusco's event at his own room (I dropped by for a day or so, but have no idea who won). Then Strawberry's first tournament, which was held in maybe New Carlton Maryland, in a hotel. (That's where I got the shirt :) )
Both those events where within 6 months or a year from each other; I think maybe Pete's event was earlier, like late '91, then Strawberry's in '92. If Dennis has any records, or if anyone could dig up any news reports, that would be great! If it was Sigel over Varner in the Fusco event, who was it at Strawberry's??
I keep running into Cecil Tugwell's name relating to one-pocket tourneys.
Hard Times hosted an all-star field for the SECOND annual Hard Times One-Pocket Classic.
In the first match, Efren Reyes quickly defeated Jose "Littleman" Parica. (Littleman?)
The defending titleholder, according to the magazine, was Chris McDonald from the year before, who defeated Billy Incardone and barely got by a 16-year-old Shannon "The Cannon" Daulton.
Moving through the losers' bracket, Efren eliminated Road Warrior "Utah Mark" -- who is that? -- to take on Buddy "The Rifleman" Hall, who had just defeated Danny DeLiberto.
In the winners' bracket, Cecil "The Left Duke" Tugwell, who placed second the year before to Chris McDonald had a revenge match and now faced Efren Reyes in the final showdown.
Cecil, "one of the most feared one-pocket players on the West Coast," was ready to take on the Magician. According to the article, Efren played brilliantly and drew loud applause from the spectators, but the end result was Cecil being the victor. The article states "Cecil's knowledge and experience proved too much for Reyes to escape." The final match and title went to Southern California's own Cecil "The Left Duke" Tugwell.
First place, Cecil Tugwell; second place, Efren Reyes; third place, Buddy Hall; and fourth place, Chris McDonald.
There is a picture of Cecil and Efren, and Efren looks like a young kid, even though it occurred only 14 years ago.
What is a shame is the article is in the September-October 1990 "The Snap" magazine has no dates and no money payouts!

Steve, Dennis Wilson actually has the original chart used in both of Strawberry's tournaments. I'm not sure about Fusco's event, though. TexasTom said he won it in '93, and according to Dennis, Mike Sigel won Strawberry's tournament in '92, with Nick Varner coming in second. I do believe that both of Strawberry's tournaments were held at that hotel in New Carrollton, Maryland.
I put a call in to Dennis, and when he calls me back, I am going to ask him about Fusco's tourney. He has an incredible pool library with all kinds of pool items, original programs, the sanctioning papers from an older pool organization which crumbled, tournament charts, and a kazillion pictures! He also is very knowledgeable and has uncovered some amazing data relating to pool. Ask him about the little-known fact about Minnesota Fats and Ella Fitzgerald sometime. Amazing!

Haven't heard anything from Mobile, but I imagine the action will escalate right into the tournament next month. Did you say that will be Aug. 7? I heard Wade Crane has been staying over there. I imagine his one hole game would be awful tough!!
Doc
Hey Doc, yep it is the 7/8 th. Wade was over at Breakers when I was there last Sat nite. I know he and Ricky matched up but do not know the details as it was while I was involved in a match on the other side of the room.
Later, Pel :)

Moving through the losers' bracket, Efren eliminated Road Warrior "Utah Mark" -- who is that? Thanks JAM, that's another event for the record!
Utah Mark is probably Mark Tadd

Jen did you know that in her bio Blues Singer Etta James claims that she is the illegitimate daughter of the Fat Man. She kind of looks like him too.

Hey Pel,
Well the event is in 3 weeks then. I'm planning to go over, but I haven't decided whether or not to play. Bar boxes are not my favorite tables, and I believe Bear will have the players using quarters, rather than leaving the ball boxes open so that red circle cueballs can be used. That plus, with so many heavy hitters, it's going to be difficult to get into the money; so I may just look for you or any other 1p.org players to play some one hole. If there are enough of us, maybe we could play partners. I don't even care if we gamble.
Anyone else going?

DocIf I can make it, count me in on the partners one pocket. I love that game. Never know, ya might get lucky and get me as a partner, LOL. Then again, you might get a bad roll and get me too. In total honesty I don't think any player on earth has ever had a greater variance in speed than myself. From playing so bad that I couldn't beat Ned The Primate, The Primate gets the 6 ball from Ned The Primmer, to beating a former U.S. Open winner playing even. Go figure. Hell, these guys from Vicksburg busted me the other day and named this guy after me.
Geezy peezy, Bill, that is one big kahuna! :D
That fellow on the right looks like Woody Harrelson.
Is that the kind of fishing you'all got down there! Looks like heaven.

Great pic, $Bill! Which of the three are you? :D Well, we'll see what shakes out of the tree over in Mobile. I'm game. Hey, don't knock Ned The Primate, he shoots pretty well at times...

Bill, Ronnie called Keith yesterday and left his cell number. He's planning on attending an upcoming big tournament in Mobile and said if Keith comes that Harry Platis might also make the trip! :D
I saw Harry play for the first time at the last Derby City Classic. I was impressed with his banking capabilities. He banks pretty darn good (IMO). I have never met a nicer man on the tournament trail with a genuine passion for the game.
What tournament is happening in Mobile, do you know?

Bill, it sounds like it is going to be one FINE tourney in Mobile.
The UPA is having a UPA-sanctioned event, The Big Apple 9-Ball Challenge, NYC on August 5th through 8th, 2004. It is awful when tournaments happen at the same time (IMO), but if I had MY choice of the two, I would pick Mobile for my dough!

Ronnie, Keith and Mobile, together again? 30 years ago those two ruled the gulf coast. I would think Keith would love a big money bar box tourney. That ring game sounds just up his alley too. I'm sure there will be tons of action too. People still love Keith down this way.

If there are any tournaments you need results to in the 80's, I have a large collection of National Billiard News that I may be able to find some results. Just drop me a PM if theres one in particular. Sam
