View Full Version : double/triple rail banks
Last night this situation came up a few times for my opponent (shooting top left):
START(
%AN7O5%BL7P8%CJ5O4%DL7N1%EM7P1%FK6P1%GK6N8%HM7N8%IL7O4%JK6M5
%KJ5P7%LJ5N2%MP1Y5%NO8V4%OJ5M0%PV2W6
)END
Sometimes only the 14 would be there, sometimes just the 13...he tried 2 railing each time, but never quite hit it right (doesn't play 1 hole much)...
Any advice on english, placement, ways to stroke this well, etc? Just looking for some ideas and things to try tonight after league...I can see the obvious 2 railer, a pretty obvious 3 railer, and a probably unneccessarily complex 4 railer...
thanks

thanks
You mean this two-railer, Jack?

Or maybe this 5-railer :) ??

I don't see the 3-railer or 4-railer you're talking about

Steve, maybe this is the 4 railer:
START(
%AN7O5%BL7P8%CJ5O4%DL7N1%EM7P1%FK6P1%GK6N8%HM7N8%IL7O4%JK6M5
%KJ5P7%LJ5N2%ML0X8%NK8T5%OJ5M0%PR8W1%UD3D3%Vg5[3%WC8N6%XK0T1
%Y]3C7%ZC2M6%[s1R4%\^1C5%]h5[1%^s4S1%eB3a4
)END
I don't see a 3 railer available.
Doc
nice shots steve, doc...didn't get a chance to try last night...was busy having fun of a different nature...but, this was the 3 railer i mentioned...perhaps it was just a fluke when i saw someone hit it, and i did have to reposition the cueball a little...in the setup given, would the 2 railer be the common shot?
START(
%AN7O5%BL7P8%CJ5O4%DL7N1%EM7P1%FK6P1%GK6N8%HM7N8%IL7O4%JK6M5
%KJ5P7%LJ5N2%MK6Q5%NO7V6%OJ5M0%PV3U6%QA7A8%WC8X1%XO3V5%YN9[3
%ZC1X1%[r2P2%\O3[3%]D4D6%^r6O7
)END
The three rail is the shot if the balls lay as shown. However that wasn't available in your first diagram. To make that three rails though it won't go as shown. With the o/b hitting the center of the head rail it would go way long.
This route is closer to the angle needed and the side pocket can get real big from here.
START(
%AN7O5%BL7P8%CJ5O4%DL7N1%EM7P1%FK6P1%GK6N8%HM7N8%IL7O4%JK6M5
%KJ5P7%LJ5N2%MK6Q5%NO7V6%OJ5M0%PV3U6%QA7A8%WC8X1%XO3V5%YX1[1
%ZC1X1%[r8W6%\Y1[1%]D4D6%^s3W1
)END
I have a question though, I've got to assume the rack of balls isn't there. Otherwise it would be a strange break. lol
If so why not just cut the ball in? That is provided you can reach it well enough.
Rod
An added note, if you play that three rail, you'll have to draw the ball up table in case you miss. lol
hehe, thanks rod...yeah, i didn't have it laid out well the first time...
so you'd recommend that 3 railer over the 2 railer?
and yeah, better get that cue ball out of there...
Jack,
It depends on the angle which shot is best. A two rail can leave your opponent a bank to his pocket if it's not left in the jaws. A three rail is a natural angle to the pocket and you leave whitey on the same side of the table as the o/b. It also depends on what you can do with whitey and where, plus leave the ball real close. I might have to pass and play safe if I don't have a good option. There's no hiding balls from here so you'd better be sure before pulling the trigger.

and yeah, better get that cue ball out of there...Jack, the thing about that kind of two-rail shot is that to go, they pretty much have to be shot with just 'pocket speed' -- which means like Rod said, you better leave it in the jaws (or tuck the cue ball behind blocking balls) or you're going to give up a bank. If you have to leave the cue ball naked, you're probably better off looking at something else, IMO...
The three-railier could be hit a little firm and still go, though.
The best end game layout to play the three railer might be more like this, 'cuz it's natural to get the cue ball back up table:

What you require to do is use the "RBS Pooltable", which can be found here (http://endeavor.med.nyu.edu/~wei/pool/pooltable2.html).
Highlight and copy the above "gibberish", then got to the link above and click on paste. The balls will magically appear where the person wants them to be in the diagram.
Good luck!

Good luck! Those funny text blocks require the WEI table tool (which uses Flash -- so you might find you need to download that). You'll find the WEI link if you look up in the top right area of your display, right below where it says 'Message Board' in the OnePocket.org menu bar, and find Need to show a shot? Click here to use the WEI table (http://onepocket.org/table/pooltable2.html)
Here's how to use it:
Use your mouse to highlight all that funny text from one end to the other (but nothing extra)
Copy the text block (by right clicking and then selecting 'copy', or by hitting 'Control C')
Click on the Wei link (if you haven't already opened the window)
Within the WEI window click on the 'Paste' label on the WEI page
A warning comes up, & click OK
Maybe another warning, and then, viola!
The diagram is interactive, so once you have it open, you can create your own diagrams by using your mouse to move around the balls, etc. Then reverse the process to 'Copy' from WEI and 'Paste' into a post of your own on the message board.
Pretty neat, huh?
Many thanks to MR Wei, who came up with this in about 2000...
