Well, looks like winning the U.S. Open did good things for Gabe Owens confidence - he beat Cliff ( who, btw, was the 1st pick in the calcutta ) in the final to win the midwest expo one pocket tournament - I think 1st place paid $3,000.00.

Luke, from the bracket view it looks like you ran into the Gabe Owen buzzsaw...

Ohio based Jason Miller defeated coach and mentor John Brumback in the DCC 9 ball Banks this year.

Hey Steve....Yeah, i had my usual 'easy draw'....drawing Gabe for my first match. Let me cry a little and say that nobody can spot me anything at drawing tough - In the last 8 one pocket tournaments that I entered, here's my seven first round opponents : Cliff TWICE, Buddy Hall, Gabe Owen, Jack Cooney, and Rafael Martinez..:o...And while I was playing some of these matches, buddies of mine were laughing at me, as they, in the first round, drew guys in wheelchairs, octogenarians, and the only woman in the DCC One Pocket tournament ( not Jeanette Lee, it was a girl that couldn't play ).....But, bottom line, like all of us one pocket players, I love it, no matter who I draw...:)

Which reminds me, one of the interesting common traits I have noticed in players that successfully make a living hustlin' pool is that they tend to have very, very good memories for people, places, what 'speed' their opponent played at, what game they played, their style of play and the money they played for, etc. etc. Even many years later! (can you tell I'm not a good candidate for making a living hustlin' pool :) :) )

Ghost, come to Grady's tourney in December. Maybe you'll get me in the first round. That's better than a bye :D

I've been out of pool for over 12 years, or so, until recently. I saw someone mention drawing Jack Cooney in a tournament. Is that the same Jack Cooney who used to play for some of the biggest money around? How is he playing now? That guy looked like a schoolteacher and played fierce!!

Ahhhhh,,soooo, true, Gerry. No one ever came off the stall any stronger than, Jack. Frequently he never had to come off it to win.

Adam Smith beat Earl in the B side bracket 3-0. Total time of the match was 20 minutes. Earl started bashin Adam while he was running out the last rack. Earl was saying that Adam was playing TOO SLOW, and that he could run them balls so fast. After it was over, he kept harpin on Adam.

Not sure how long Earl thinks a race to 3 should take in 1P, but I think that 20 minutes constitutes playing at a decent pace.

At the Midwest Open, the most action came from the 1P players. Since the 9' tables were almost always available, people were always gambling. Marco/Sergio/Adam/Cliff/Ike were always busy. Seemed that it was much easier for the players to settle on a 10-7 9-7 game rather than trying to scrounge up some 9ball.

1 late night match of note: Cliff Joyner played Adam Smith a 4 ahead match for a decent amount of jellybeans. I think Cliff was playing 11-7 10-7. Adam came out the gate and quickly went to 3-0, but Cliff battled back. Once even the tide had shifted, and it was easy to see Cliff was gonna out run the spot. Cliff looked sharp closing out action with a couple really nice bank shots. No doubt he is one of the best 1P players in the world.

It was the first time I got to see pro 1hole up close and I sure learned alot. The only bad part was the calcutta. Me and a buddy got shannon in the calcutta. It was a high bid but we thought he had a good chance of winning. anyways we spent 350 and shannon had to get second just to get our money back. He got 4th and we got paid 166. Bad bet, but the action was good and cool to see everyone up close. It was neat that all the players were approachable and didnt mind talking to the crowd. Sorry I didnt get to meet anyone from the sight cant wait till we all get our new shirts.
