View Full Version : Disaster in the Game room !

You all may have noticed I have been AWOL from the forum of late. That has been due to a real b--ch of a problem at the old homestead.
We went up to stay with some friends in Prescott for a few days, and upon returning we faced a real nightmare.
Our garage is also our game room. I have spent a lot of time and $$$ making it very comfortable. It consists of my 9' Crown table, a six stool bar, refer, A/C and heating unit, and a good grade of indoor/outdoor carpet.
I also have a nice stereo and LCD TV. It's a real "man cave" where me and the guys can kick back and have some fun playing pool and watching sports.
Unfortunately, the cave is also home to such mundane neccessities as the water heater and the washer and dryer.
I would assume we had no sooner pulled out of the driveway for our 2 day getaway, when the service line to the washer ruptured, and for all the time we were gone, sent a stream of water, under pressure, throughout a good portion of the garage.
Why do those things never occur during waking hours, when you are home?
Among the casualties were my desk (and all the paper work on it,) my laptop, my camcorder, (which I use for taping lessons) and one corner of the pool table, which is drying with a nice stain on my new 860 Simonis cloth.
The other damage to the house was extensive. The door to the garage leads to the entryway just off a sunken living room with hardwood flooring,(1/2 inch of water in there) and the partition at the garage wall backs up to the master bath and bedroom, and water leaked under there. (only 1/4 inch in the bath and BR) The bottom of that partition will have to be replaced or mold and mildew will surely set in.
There was so much water all carpet and flooring in all those areas will have to be replaced. Thank God for H.O.insurance, but what a mess.
However, you all know how tight those insurance companies can be with full restitution of a claim. So in lieu of sympathy, I will accept cash donations to help fund the repairs. (obviously, the pool table first) Please make checks payable too --D.M.K.G.R.D.R.F.

C'mon guys,we all helped out JoeyA, Gulfport Doc, Vappros and those other Gulf Coast people......didn't we ?
Dick <---was just kidding about the relief fund...but he now has steel clad, burst-proof supply lines.

Dick,
My sympathies for your problems. That is not pleasant to have happen at any time, much less when you are gone. Is it safe to assume that the Yukon Jack was saved?

Dennis, thanks for asking about the YJ. Yes, I keep all my REALLY valuable stuff in a water/fireproof safe.

PS. Its 3:30 AM here, and I'm so pissed I can't get to sleep.

Dick,
I figured that you had the important things taken care of. You can always entertain yourself to sleep by reading my Ghostball thread. That may cheer you up a little.

I am sorry to hear about this Dick, your game room there is nice and I am sure it will be back in order soon.I would like to come pay you a visit soon and will bring you a bottle since yours might be alittle watered down. :o
That is a real bummer, Dick. Of course, had this happened while you were at home, then you'd be up all night wondering what was wrong because that would have been too easy.
My table is in the garage, also, but it is not safe there either. Mrs. Skin has decided that right on top of it is the proper place for everything she no longer wants in the house. You know, things somebody might trip over if they were just put on the floor out of the way until I got to them. No pay, no play is what she really means. :D
Good luck with the repairs.

Dick, that's an awful thing to have happen to a guy. I've had similar things happen to me, so I can sympathize with you. Just make sure to hold the insurance company's feet to the fire until they pay in full. Most of them offer the sun and the moon when selling, but then try to low-ball when it's time to pay a claim. Hope you have one of the good companies. Get outside appraisal if necessary. Good luck, podna!

Dick,
Sorry to hear about your losses. Of course, if you really wanted Katrina type assistance, you would have had to stand around while it was happening and done nothing. If you had, we could have sent you a new table with possible formaldihyde contamination.
You also did not sound any where near sorry for yourself to get aide from Washington but we may get Bush to do a fly over pretty soon.

Dick, BAD roll pal.
Speaking as one who lives in hurricane country, please heed Docs advice ! Insurance co's. are in the bussiness of collecting premiums, not paying claims.
Independent adjusters and lawyers are almost a necessity. Short, bald, middle eastern lawyers are recomended. I knew one that got a charge of sodomy reduced to following too close.

And if they give you any trouble at all, you can always rely on the services of the law firm of R&D&S. We don't fool around through normal channels.

I know how you feel, Dick. My basement-game room flooded last summer. That was the third time. Each time for a different reason. Hopefully I have solved all the potential problems by now.

Thanks for the offer, Dennis but my insurance, (AARP/Hartford) came through with a very generous settlement, had a check within 9 days, and things are now almost back to Pre-Katrina days. The I/O carpet in the game room was probably salvagable, but they replaced it any way. They also paid for re-felting the Crown...(Probably should not make light of what our Gulf Coast buddies went through)
Would you believe that no less than three, 1p.org. guys actually offered me financial assistance ? That's something isn't it. I'll not forget who they were. ( I will say, it was no one from Chicago.) :)
Of course I declined, but if housing prices keep dropping...who knows what the next disaster might be.
Dick's <---Wifey loves the new game room carpet, she vacuums it almost daily. I pity the guy who puts the first cigarette burn on it.
PS. Thanks for caring guys.
sjd great to hear you are back up and better than before. nice new carpet nice new simonis cloth . boy what a life!!!!
