Artie, of the modern players, I like Gabe Owen and think his style probably would suit me the best if I could play anywhere near his level. He is very smart in his tactics and he shoots straight. He would be the first person I'd choose for a lesson from among the modern players.

i would put artie , dick , billy, grady, and ghost in a blender. put them all together and thats who id like to copy in one pocket. i could just imagine the voices in my brain when it came time to shoot!!!

What an interesting question !! I personally was always an aggressive player because I had the ability to make shots and always liked shotmakers like billy who could shoot , but also play a good safe game when needed !! Artie's game was always too slow for my style even though he played the game correctly to never lose by making a serious mistake that a shooter can make if he misses . Artie has the patience that many players find hard to copy and that's because he trained himself to not lose . I think copying anothers style can really help some players who have somewhat the same ability as the player they're copying . As a young man I copied Billy's stance with the firm left leg and it seemed to give me more balance at the table and accuracy in my stroke . It was work to copy the stance because it wasn't natural for me !! I did improve and probably played the best ever in life at that time and beat some very good players that I probably wasn't suppose too . Unfortunately I made a big score at the track and stopped playing for awhile and when I started back playing it was back to my normal style with less success and most likely because I didn't have the desire to work at my game correctly . I think all young players should try to copy some of these champions that are having a problem because it might be just what you need to reach the next level and it may come natural for you in time with practice and more practice . Just my opinion !

The style of play that most impressed me when I got hooked on One Pocket was Steve Cook. I mean that I could kind of relate to. I admired the games of guys like Grady & Bugs, but something always drew me to the Cookie Monster's style of game. I think I own about all of Accustats Steve Cook videos.
I missed Ronnie, the Eddies, etc in their prime, and Marvin Henderson completely, so I can't comment on them. Efren does fantastic things, but I do not think he plays the score correctly, dammit.

Gabe Owen for me. Of players my age, I like Pittsburgh Billy's game. Outside of Buddy, Billy is probably the strongest of the old duff players who continues to get in the box. He plays smart, and he can still come with the shot. Parica is another guy whose game has lasted.

I guess I would have to say Efren. I was able to see him play quite a bit in the 80's and he never failed to amaze me with his shot choices. Although Steve commented that he never seemed to play the score correctly, Efren would run out from anywhere seemingly and the score was just an afterthought.
I never had the chance to see Artie play but from all I've heard about him I think Racetrack Phil sums it up pretty well. I have no doubt that Artie is in a league of his own and is many moves ahead of most of his opponents. I always thought Allen Hopkins played a nice game of one pocket also.

Out of today's players i'd say Gabe, he moves really well. From what i've seen him play it always seems he plays the correct shot and rarely sells out.

Thanks for the nod Artie, I thought I had a good trifecta there. Johnny and I were good friends and I have a high regard for him as a player and the man he became later in life. When I first met him I invited him to my home, he laughed and said "kid, 25 yrs ago, you wouldnt have invited me to Burger King". I vote Ervolino every yr for the HOF but he gets snubbed for some reason...maybe 2010 is his year?

But I forgot the rest of they words to the song and who sang it. And My Fathers name was John And my Oldest Brothers name was John. But I think Johnny Will make it into the hall of fame. If there ever is a "Bite" Hall of Fame, Ervolino would go in on the first ballot. He would be accompanied by Bugs Rucker, Ronnie Allen, Corn Bread, Billy Johnson and Cliff Joyner, all champions in the field. I eliminated the bite from Ervolino when he called me for the bite, and I cold-bloodedly cut off his bite story and said, "Is $200 enough?" The story rebuff hurt his biters pride, and he never called for cheese again. Of course he took the $200.
