This came up a few nights ago against one of my regular opponents. If I win this game, I win the set. Situation below, very similar to one discussed here previously. I step up and start salivating over the spot shot. Then I hear the 1p.org committee in my head.

"A spot shot is no gimmie, is it?"
"Why shoot the spot shot when you have the perfect move with the nine?"
"Don't leave the opponent a free shot."
"Play the score, play the score, play the score..."
Etc.

I caved.

What do you think I shot? (insert sissy pool player icon here) See page 2.

My opponent tried to follow the 9 in but mis-hit it. And I won...but I sure didn't feel like a man afterwards, I can tell you that! :D

Skin,

If it makes you feel any better I think you shot the right shot in that situation.

to quote a famous nfl coach."YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME". not to feel like a man.although some would say (not dennis:D ) that passing up the spot shot was manly and winning was definitely manly.:) (note smiley face)

lll,

EGO has no place in the game whatsoever. The idea is to play the best that you can play on that day, in that game, on that shot against that opponent. Winning and losing don't enter into it. They are only distractions and we already have enough of those.

Skin the minute you heard 1p.org committee, the spot shot was gonna be iffy.
You made a good decision, if you had shot the spot shot and missed you'd still be kicking yourself. A lot of those shots are all about how I feel at the time. If negative thoughts slip in they usually create negative results.
Rod. <----when my ego gets in the way, it mostly gets run over.

Oh no. Not you too, Dennis! What's Steve been putting in the water around here lately? ;)

Actually, I happened to be seeing the good shots well that night and when I got up to shoot that layout, the only shot that made sense was the nine cross corner. Usually a spot shot to me would be like a waving red flag to a bull. But not that time. It was an off-planet experience. :)

btw: good one, demonrho

Don't I know it about the 1p.org committee, Rod. You guys have wrested the 9b devil from my soul. In fact, I can hardly compete at that game anymore and nor do I really want to. One-pocket is such a better game that, outside of some 8b on a 9 footer here and there, I don't play anything else these days. I am saved! :D

Skin < a happy sissy pool player ;)

Skin < a happy sissy pool player ;) I like you attitude it was very truth full and aggressive. And that was very nice off you to say what you said. And I do hope you learned something from my one pocket posts and replies. Thats why I did what I did. And the things I said work and will improve your game. And all the things I wrote and said you could wright a pretty good one pocket book. But the main purpose was for people to learn and understand what one pocket is about. And why all the players that have passed away. Loved and played one pocket. The good thing about one pocket is that you cannot learn one pocket over night. Like nine ball If you can count from one to nine you can play nine ball.

Thanks, Artie. The things you have written have helped me a lot, especially your emphasis on THINKING instead of just shooting without really knowing what you are trying to accomplish.

I have been around onepocket.org about a year now trying to learn something about the game. I just now am beginning to understand it a little bit and get comfortable. Many times I look over the situation and something somebody here wrote flashes into my mind and I can see the right way to go. It is a great, great game and you guys around here who help us learners are made of solid gold. And I know I am not the only one who feels that way.

Skin A great teacher teaches a student tell he learns and understands what you are teaching him. If the teacher doesnt do that he is not worth two dead flies. The student or the player has to learn the shot and why he is shoting that shot. Not just because its his turn too shoot at the table. And never scipe over anything you are teaching and moveing on to something new. A lot off people do that. But not me I keep reapeading the same thing tell people understand it. It does not help to skip over it and go to something new.

Artie, that sounds good. We actually have shared a "private" room with two tables in it with AZBilliards for the last 3-4 years, and if not an actual tournament, there have been certainly plenty of little matches. I haven't played much myself the last few years because I am so occupied organizing the Hall of Fame dinner and covering/photographing the event. Maybe a team challenge between AZ & One pocket.org??

Everyone could chip in and send me down there (airfare/hotel, I'll swing for my food) and I'd take more pictures than Efren has made balls in his lifetime. I would also sniff out all the action and provide detailed reports on all the nefarious activity from our esteemed members.

This would free up Steve to take some of you guys off for once:D

Very thoughtful -- but that sounds like it could get kind of expensive (especially me trying to take off some of these seasoned killers :) )
