View Full Version : What is "old style" one pocket?
I sometimes see references to the "old style" of one pocket. I think I have a pretty good idea of what the modern style is, but can anybody explain what is meant by "old style"? Is there any modern player who plays close to this style? I watched Ike Runnles play on live stream from Galveston. He has an unusual game. Is he, for example, a modern "old style" player?

Isaac Ike Runnels plays old style one pocket like Hubert Cokes used to play. Suffocating safety and cue ball control. Tough to beat. His only flaw is he has no power game, and doesnt run the balls like a straight pool player. Great players can mix those styles up.

Run balls , yes.
On top of that, however, balls must be broken-out and often moved about to accomplish getting more than 2 or 3 or 4 and ducking again. We of the nine and eight ball disciplines have a much more difficult time with breakouts and such than do folks who grew up playing 14.1.
And wouldn't you know, the reason is, once again, stroke.

Thanks for the repsonse, Freddy.
So, was suffocating safety & cb control perhaps the original style by the earliest guys - Hayden Lingo, "Big Nose" Roberts, Glen "Eufaula Kid" Womack, etc.? I got those names from Grady's article at the Hall of Fame link. Cue ball control and smart play is how Lingo's game is described on his HOF page. If that's how they played, that leads me to believe the orginal guys must have come out of a straight pool background. I can't imagine a 9 baller being equipped for that!
Skin < thinks "Big Nose" and "Bucktooth" must be among the least sought-after pool names of all time

how much of "old style" is /was due to the nappy cloths . 5x 10 tables, and "mud" ie clay balls? It had nothing to do with the equipment. In the olden days they just played a safer style. And today they play more off a aggressive style. Just like the old foot ball teams they played more off a defensive style off football. And today is more agressive and offense. And the even make catches with one hand. The Bears were the mosters off the midway. because off thier deffense. And playing a safer sttle off one pocket. You will make less mistakes. Becuse you are shooting less aggresive shots.

Artie,
I think you hit on something very important...If a 1p player can get it in his head he is not going to shoot harder than say, medium speed the entire game, his game will become safer and more controlled because he gave himself a limit. Just like driving is supposed to be safer when you do the speed limit. Those who drive faster and risky are more likely to get into an accident...but don't drive too slow or you could also cause a problem.
