Please post your comments and discussion here, to keep the ballot thread clean. Any comment posts in the ballot thread will be moved here.

But, all opinions and comments -- both for and against -- are welcome. Give your favorite players a plug! Just keep it civil with your fellow Onepocket.org members. Keep in mind the One Pocket HOF honor means a lot to those who are elected; just being on the ballot is an accomplishment! These players are all champions and they all deserve our respect.

Thank you, and remember to vote!

I voted for one living player and one who passed away, I thought that was the best plan. My picks were Buddy and Ervilino.

I believe that everyone on that list belongs in the HOF and a few names not mentioned as well. All in due time they will be inducted.

I will be at the HOF dinner this year, It will be difficult and differnt without Randi, I hope Grady is doing best he can. I dont know what we can do to honor Randi at the dinner but I do believe something more than a moment of silence is called for. I think if we put our heads together on this we can come up with something meaningful. She was part of one pocket in my eyes.

Thanks for everything

If possible, how about naming the one handed one pocket tournament in her honor? Or a table named in her honor at the dinner where special people are seated? Just throwing ideas out trying to help.

i want to campaign for earl heisler. a player and gambler from i think the 1940's to the 1980's . not as well known and maybe a ball below the best ran the sports palace in new orleans which was a stopping place for road players to get action and earl would play anybody .it also was where new york blackie called "home" for many years. i mention this only to add credibility to the sports palace as an action destination. in eddie robbins bool earl is described as a VERY good one pocket player. eddie emphasized the very in his description.

Stoking the old mem's again Larry. When I was just a lad, and "thought" I could play 1P...Earl tortured me in the Sports Palace, as he did a lot of roadies.
He had a lot going for him in his joint. (climate control, boiled crabs, and tables you could wring water out of) But Earl was a real solid mover, and a gentleman to play with. It was some years later, before I exacted my revenge. (in Baton Rouge)
You almost had to get him out of his joint to beat him in the 50's and 60's.

Didn't he sell the Sports Palace to Flyboy ?

I don't think he owned the place ,maybe a part, I remember him having or being involved with the poker game. He was the best player there and all the young players patterned themselves after him. They all played painfully slow. The only guy who played at a reasonable pace was Danny Wong and he had moved there from Frisco. I was with Eddie Taylor driving towards NOLA. he told me he gave Earl 8/7 and it was a hard game.
Rod. <---never played Earl and ducked all his proteges.

Relocated from the ballot thread...
Great Player - I guess Clem belongs in the One Pocket HOF since he beat many of the guys who are either in there already or on the ballot. As a kid I remember when a discussion came up about the best One Pocket player, Clem was on top of everyone's list. The only player mentioned in the same breath back then was the recently departed White Rags (John Fitzpatrick). All the deceased players on this list (plus Jr. Goff) would have been underdogs playing Clem, except maybe Worst, who came along later anyway.

Back Room LEGEND - And Fats should have his own HOF, exclusively for him. He was that much in a class by himself. He did brag incessantly about "beating every living human", but his claims were not that far from the truth. Some may have given him a little weight (like 8-7 or 10-8) but Fats got the cash and that's what counts. He did in fact lose a few times to top players and they were quick to point that out. What they sometimes failed to mention was that Fatty changed the game and got them in the end. Funny how that part of many stories got left out.

Many good players who I knew (including Puckett, Lassiter and Beenie) gave credit to Fats for his game making ability and winning record. To a man they attested to Fats being a very smart gambler, and his game of choice was almost exclusively One Pocket.

There are other players who belong in the HOF but these two stand out on this list imo.

Never knew of him playing, he would lose/win more betting on the side or putting in with his acolytes, than playing on his own.

he wasnt a one pocket player but the best nine ball player maybe ever. so of course he would still play one pocket very well especially to on lookers.
but politics and admiration will get him in.

At the risk of making Freddy feel better(he's funnier when he's pissed) I would also like to know why anybody thinks Buddy Hall should be in a One-Pocket HOF. There's a lot I don't know about many players but I would never equate Buddy with OP.

Fred,
Just and only to make you feel better, nothing else, in the book "Rags to Rifleman, then what?" by W.W. Woody, on pages 191-192, he tells a story of Grady and Buddy playing a race to 4 in 1P, even up for $1,000.00. Buddy won.

Grady is head and shoulders over Buddy in 1P, but Buddy pulled off a great win there in Colorado Springs.

I voted for Hopkins, SJD and Cokes (the champeen of the Evansville, Indiana Elk's Club! :D )

I'm a big fan of Buddy Hall, but it's from his exploits in 9B, not 1P.

That did happen, but there were other things involved. And Buddy would not play Grady anymore OP after that. Let Grady tell his side of the story.

Plus in a race to 4 at the top level of play it seems almost any pro can beat another in a short set. I look at Derby and say Frost and Schmidt, Frost is the better player and any knowledgeable person would be on the Freezer but in a short race Scott can lose as he did. The Derby finals of the one pocket should be to 5 IMO.

Lenny,

You are mostly correct, but I'd say that a race to 5 is also not long enough to determine a champion. But in a tournament, that's all the time you have to play a finals match.

Thats true Lenny, but all tournament's have to deal with time constraints.

Race to 3, 5, 7, won't make that much difference, if one guy gets the jump on the other one.

As you may have heard before...tournaments don't determine who is the best player, they just determine who gets the trophy.

The only true decider would be 10-12 ahead, but who could stay awake that looooong...(besides you or me)

I agree it would be nice to see an ahead set or a long set, race to 5 should be the minimum for a one pocket finals IMO but DCC probably wont change that. I think every tournament has a longer finals set.

I never knew his name, other than Buttermilk. He may have gotten to Johnston City once or twice back in the 60's. I saw him hanging around with Vernon Elliott and Fats, but I don't think I ever saw him play. That's usually a sign of respect by his peers.

Donna,
There are some really great stories about your dad in a book entitled "Rags to Rifleman...Then What?" by W.W. Woody. It'a a biography on Cecil Paul "Buddy" Hall, one of the greatest ever. He speaks highly of your dad and there are a few funny accounts of how Buddy viewed your pap beating him very early in buddy's career.

The book is very rare. I have not heard hide nor hair of whatever became of Mr. Woody.

Use the "search" feature here and at AZB.com. His name has been bantered about here before.

Good luck on your search for more info. And thanks for visiting here with us. It's our pleasure to be sure.

Terry, did you know that Bob Henning, of BeBob Publishing, owns the publishing right to "Rags to Rifleman"? I asked him why he doesn't re-publish it, since so many people would like to read it. He said that he believed he'd have to sell 5000 copies in order to pay for the editing and publishing, and that he didn't think that many would sell.

Never playhed there Doc. There was plenty of action around there around 40 years ago with some good shortstops, the likes of Cotton Rhodes, 9-ball player, Tommy Mann, good bank player and some others I don't know. When I was a kid the first good player I ever beat was Cotton. A class act and a true gentleman with plenty of heart. Buttermilk was the best 9 ball player by far from around that area.

Thank You for each and every story about my father" Buttermilk Brown,"he was one of the best known in our home town as far as pool went,i remember as a child the phone would ring bout 9 pm or so it would be Jack's Pool Room asking :"is your dad home" most the time he would be sleeping and they would say wake him and tell him there is a hustler in town, and to get on up here.lot of times when he would leave and go there i might not see him until morning or the next night.all i really ever knew was that he played one pocket and 9 ball, and people would have lots of side bets on him,i never could beat him ,unless he just wanted me to , he would play off,but my two brothers took up the game with dad and they would go to lots of different states and play, but i don't know many stories when they would be out of town, that is what i would love to know, stories that other pool players have to say about him as" Buttermilk Brown,"

Thank You

Never playhed there Doc. There was plenty of action around there around 40 years ago with some good shortstops, the likes of Cotton Rhodes, 9-ball player, Tommy Mann, good bank player and some others I don't know. When I was a kid the first good player I ever beat was Cotton. A class act and a true gentleman with plenty of heart. Buttermilk was the best 9 ball player by far from around that area.

Hi Miss Donna,

It was nice to read your posts about your father. I wonder if you have a friend who could scan those pictures into a computer, so that they could be sent to this site? We would all love to see and read those items.

Best regards,

Art "Doc" Tripp
