View Full Version : Spot on the wall distance

I have just started practicing the spot on the wall technique for 3 rail kicks/banks. I'm a low B player, and I have always done fairly well just "seeing" the kicks without any systems. Anyway, I am giving this one a chance, as it seems quite reliable and is easy to remember.

My question is how far should the spot on the wall be from the table. I tried it about a table length away and also about 2 to 3 table lengths away. Each distance gave me very similar results. Is it typical that the distance is not really important? Or was my experience an anomaly?

Thanks.

I don't think that the distance of the spot on the wall matters, as long as you can clearly see the spot to use as a reference. I play in (15,000 sq. foot) Planet 9-Ball in Tampa and their ceilings and walls are painted black with planets, comets, astroids, stars, etc. painted on them. I used to play one-pocket on table #3 and had my spots picked out to shoot a successful three railer to get out of the break when I was hidden by the stack. I was VERY successful for a loooong time and my opponents were getting irked at my escaping their break. THEN, one day I couldn't hit my three railers at all and for weeks I was taking a beating. It turned out that while I'd been out of town they had the artist come in and re-paint the Galaxy and I'd been aiming light years away from the "Sea Of Tranquillity". I switched tables and now use a spot on nearby tables to attempt my 3 rail escapes...

(Official space helmet ON, Captain Video...)Great story, Smorg. How much did the paint job cost? Did you donate enough to pay for it before you snapped? LOL.

Dave the airbrush artist charges about $300-$400 each visit. Donate enough ? Man, I've donated so much in the past 8 years that I'm permanently in the 'black hole'. I was hoping to be abducted by colossal nekkid alien virgin wimmin by now, but all I get is Klatu Barada Nikto... Oy-Vey !

Though I don't believe he played One Pocket.

Ideally the spot should be the distance of a mirror image table pocket. Seems like Grady told me to try and stay under 10 feet. The wider the angle the more critical it is. I had a spot figured out good at the VFW - then some butthole cleaned the wall :D

When my buddy and bitter practice rival,(cause he is so much better than me)play and he starts to resort to that I just stand in his line and block the spot. Perfectly legal. lol
