Here's a layout from game 5 of their match in the 2000 World One-Pocket Championship. Richie is down 3-1 going to 4. Alex just jumped the cueball off of the table and made a ball in Richie's pocket. Richie now has ball in hand behind the line and needs one ball. What would you do?
P.S. This ain't two hoopleheads playing each other, both of these guys can play.

Well, if you hadn't froze me to the end-rail (as usual on the WEI), I would jack up and spear the 7 ball two-rails and draw behind the 1 and beat you like that, if you hadn't froze me to the end-rail.

Richie shot the "trick shot" and drew back and scratched in the corner, probably only possible on new cloth.

Anyone with a stroke, runs that risk. Granted you should be able to control your draw stroke, but I have scratched, probably one out of 10-12 times shooting the "okay doke", (as we used to call it) trying to force the head ball forward.
It looks great if you hit it good, but it is NOT a shot I've seen a lot of good player's go for, for big $$$. A lot can go wrong, and as Rod pointed out...You only need 1, he needs 2...Put one of those balls up on the end rail, and I'll take my chances.
It all depends on your mood...sometimes I went for it, but most times (in crucial situations) I did not. Billy I. thinks its a mistake proof gimme, and he can play some...but I respectfully disagree. JMHO..;)

It definitely ain't no hanger. When I practiced it, I drew the cueball to the siderail, never close to a scratch.
For anything serious and me needing one ball, I'm playing safe most times. Unless I'm stuck real good:D . That'll change your thinking.

I'd shoot the force through on the 1 ball. I didn't see Richie needed only 1. I'd just shoot the standard safety here.

I suspect that I would take a break and chew something for my headache.
Stuck 3-1 to 4 against AP? Force the headball into the pocket. If you can't get that done then you will not win any way. If one were playing well enough to win, one would probably not be stuck 3-1.
And anyone who scratches on that shot should switch to bowling.

i did hit it good:rolleyes: but even off the rail the 2 railer is not an automatic(unless you are freddy shooting the bank insert emoticon of choice ) and if you miss and play shape on the 1 you just sold out(:) for me)

KOUD and RBL,
For your information, I do not passively draw the ball to the side rail on the Okay-doke shot. If I'm flying at the shot, I want to give the guy a real problem.
I am drawing the ball back, as close as I can to the head rail, and hitting the mass of two balls, causes the cue ball to bounce back considerably more.
On some tables, you can actually shoot too easy for the back ball to go two rails,.. and still draw back enough to scratch. (with just a slight mis-hit)
Of course, Someone like Quad, (or one of you guy's ;)) may lack the stroke, to draw back and scratch in the upper corner, but I assure you, many of us don't.:D

I may put the cueball closer to center than you and then cut the head ball slightly. Either way, if it works for you that's all that matters. I draw to the side-rail on this shot and that's the way I like it. I've never had a problem putting both balls near or in the pocket.
On new cloth it's easy to scratch in the corner, most of us play on worn cloth though.
Richie was shooting this on new cloth in a tournament and like you point out, he didn't get the back ball to his pocket but he still scratched.
Here's how I set it up and shoot it. Of course it would vary depending on the table, conditions, balls but this is where I try to draw to.

I probably shoot the safety 90% of the time, but when I do go for the shot, I was taught it will go from anywhere where you can make the spot shot straight back one rail, and that is the way you shoot it, also using enough draw to get back to the end rail.
That is getting harder as my stroke goes south.

Well, that IS an interesting situation. Did Alex make the spot shot and get position on the 7 for a bank or a cut? Or did he then pocket Richie's 1-ball for him?

OK RBL,
If you want to play teacher, and give us a test...why did you not go to page 3, and show the ball RR just spotted. ( a minor oversight)
Alex will be coming to the table, needing two, as does Richie now...The exact placement of the three balls now becomes VERY critical, in order to give an opinion, (or guess)...as to how the game played out.
If Alex has a 3-1 lead on the session, I can see him going for the spot shot, and trying for the narrow window he has, for straight in shape on the 7.
If he doesn't get that shape (assuming he makes the spotted ball) then he has no option, but to give RR the ball hanging in his hole.
I can also see him firing at the spotted ball, drawing over to make the one, and having first pop (7) at a good long bank for his hole.
I can't believe Alex would just passively give RR the 1 ball, on his first shot ater RR scratched. (but I might have ;) ;))

If I shot as well as they I'd probably shoot the spot shot and draw the CB at the 1 ball. For me, if I needed 1 game to win the set, :) I wouldn't want to lose the game and probably the break on a missed shot. With my ability I'd probably shoot below.

PS; I'v never played in a tournament, so their may be other considerations.

However, if you failed to make the 1 ball...you'd be wiping egg off your face for a week..(or someone betting on you, might just wipe your face off)...But we never worried about them...did we ???,:D :D

I guess I just assumed that you knew there would now be a ball on the spot and Alex has BIH. Too complicated for you I suppose.
Alex shot the ball on the spot and missed(page 3). Richie made the combo in his hole and then the second ball he needed.
I would have put it up sooner but I just woke up.

He tried to get shapes on the 7 and win the game. All in all, I think it was the best shot with both players needing two from there, but it's always tough to slow-roll a spoot shoot.
I'm not telling yet who won the set, I may post more shots from it. You should have seen the 15 shots before this layout came up:) . I already had them(most of them) diagrammed up but the WEI was acting up the other night and I had to just show the end of the game.

Spot shots are fine...if you have a 9 ball player mentallity. I thought you were a one pocket player (who actually has to think about more than firing a ball in)...I will be expecting an apology, regarding my past views on "spoot shoots" !!!.:D :D :D

I also play the head ball.
The right shot hit poorly...is still the right shot.

Do you play the head ball when you only need one ball? That's what Richie did.
with ball in hand from here many wanted to hit the seven towards their side and make the one at the same time. dick i beleive first mentioned just rolling on the one and making it. only problem is you leave the bank on the seven. what do you guys think about giving the one up

Larry,
I wasn't touting just giving RR the 1 ball...Check out post #17...I simply outlined the options that Alex had. Of those options, I believe I would have gone for the spot shot, and tried to make his 1ball...rather than slow rolling the spot shot and going for tricky shape on the 7.
I would feel confident (back in the day) that I could accomplish one, or possibly both things... most of the time.
I can't see too many guys (especially good shotmaker's) just rolling in the 1 ball...too many other options.
What I meant was, I may prefer just giving him the 1 ball,...over some of the other shot choices presented...;)
