Good God, what an awful thing. I hate to hear that another legend has passed away. Wasn't he just posting here a month or so ago?

Doc So true, Doc. My deepest sympathy to Johnny's family.

Every time I see one of our old masters like, Johnny, pass it reminds me again how much I appreciate what, Steve Booth, is doing for the game we all love. Again I must tip my cap to you my friend. No one knows who or when the next champion will be taken from us but, Steve, is doing all one man can to say thanks for the memories.

Just got word that Johnny Ervolino passed away this morning--a heart attack.

J.D.Man that's a shame :( Although Johnny was not at either Gulfport or Derby City this year, he was at Derby City last year and seemed to be in real good health (especially for a heavy smoker) for his age. He showed alot of stamina in the DCC 'practice room', where he seemed to be constantly in action or looking for action.

I remember seeing he and Cliff Joyner at Strawberry's One Pocket tournament back around 1992, when Cliff was considered more of a 9-Ball young gun than a One Pocket specialist. Johnny and Cliff went at it for hours -- or days, it seemed -- on the 'practice table' there. That session clearly had the look of Cliff paying about a c-note a game for 'lessons', as Johnny showed off his superior accumulated One Pocket knowledge to advantage over Cliff.

Of course, Cliff turned out to be a good student.

I'm real sorry I didn't get to interview Johnny, of course, but that's no comparison to the sorry so many must feel at the loss of a great player, teacher, entertainer, and great friend.

I wish I had known him better, and I sure hope that those who did can contribute a bit more about him. Anyone who has photos that they could email me, I could put them up in a little 'memorial' page.

Rest in peace, Johnny.
On second thought, instead of 'resting', he's probably already in action with all his previously deceased friends...

What a great ambassador Johnny Ervolino was for our game. I have very fond memories of him playing and just being Johnny in Johnston City. For me, he kind of represented the East Coast at the tournament. Always a pleasure to watch and listen to. May He Rack 'Em Up, Way Up!

I always liked and respected Johnny, as a longtime friend and peer. We understood each other although we could not have had more contrasting backgrounds. His knowledge of the game was perhaps unequaled. This I would sometimes find out the hard way when he was my opponent. I never witnessed better straight pool patterns than his.
He didn’t have the easiest of lives but he coped. It’s been an honor to have known him well. We’ll all miss you, my friend.

One sad day for me...I'll miss him not as a pool player but a dear friend.

Speaking of small -- it must be a small world, because where that article mentions Johnny winning a junior national title in his teens? One of our better local senior players (69 years old -- the same age as Johnny) was telling me just this weekend about how when he was about 14 he came in second in a national Boys Club straight pool contest (by running 90-something balls), to 'some Italian kid from Brooklyn' who ran 140 or so. Well, I guess we know who that Italian kid from Brooklyn was now...
