1st- Gary Abood ($1496 & 1405)*
2nd- Jason Moran (1028 & 878)*
3rd- Bennie Conway, Jr. (709 & 492)
4th- Jaybird Breland (489 & 315)
5th/6th- Ryan Malley & Daryl Biggart (337 & 210)
7th/8th- David Hennessy & Skip Jacob (232)
* Gary and Jason cut a deal to split up 1st/2nd. Naturally Gary took more, but I don't know the actual amounts.
We had 28 players-- 4 short of a full field. My guess is that the economy slowed down the entries. We had players from 5 states, and all seemed to have a good time.
This will be my last event as TD and player. At my age, performing both duties results in inferior performance at both tasks. My hope is that Jason Moran will take the event over next year. He's young, full of "piss and vinegar":D, and very motivated. And he's a nice guy as well.;)

Nice tournament Doc, sorry I had to miss it.
Where were these guys rated? I guess Gary would be an "A" and did any of the "A+" players show up.
I remember seeing Gary play when he was in Los Angeles years ago before he went south. He was just starting to be a good player then.

Wow, the east coast represented well it seems as Gary used to be up in NH and I believe Jason is still in Mass, right? I've heard of Jason as a very good young one pocket player, but never seen him play myself. Pool may be dying, but one pocket seems alive and well with the young and the old.

In the final 8, both Gary and Benny were A's. there was one C: Skip Jacob. The rest were B's.
We only had one AA player: Cliff Joyner.
Gary plays about even with Mike Black. I'm guessing he could beat "Downtown" Eddie Brown, but couldn't handle Jamie Farrell.
"The little Arab" has a great disposition for one-pocket. He doesn't rattle, and he has great powers of concentration. He's a little like Bernie P. in that respect.

Twister, I believe you may be thinking of another "Jason". Jason Moran is a Gulfport, Miss. native.

Ah, there's a young player up here in Mass that plays good one pocket and whose last name is Moran. Saw the last name and thought it was the same guy. In any case, the more young players in one pocket, the merrier.
Sure wish I could have been there...

You was missed here, we needed you here to add to our great memorial tourny. Plus i don't think i can give u 9 7 so u had a shot at the winners square we made. That Gary played so much like our great late freind Mike Surber. In our hot seat match where he blanked me 3-0(closer than it sounds) i could have swore i was playing Mike, he put me in some "go ahead and shot that shot and i got u" kinda spots. If i shot it and make it i am a hero, if i miss it im a zero. I think i learned enough in that match, and i got in stroke on Benny Conway Jr., where i could have gave him fits in that short race for the crown.

There were no pictures taken, lads. My wife was there, and she used to be a photographer, but she doesn't have the proper lenses anymore to take pics at the pool table. ~Doc

The recreational players, or C's and below, were winners in another way besides cashing. Guys like us rerely get a chance to play with and talk to players like those at this tournament. It's worth every penny of the costs to participate just for the experience and the learning. I played an A and a B, both nice guys, and it was priceless just to watch their moves and shotmaking.
We have to give it to Doc; he put on another good show. Also, the room is truly an good venue. I overheard an older guy (probably my age) say, "We'd kill to have a room like this in Baton Rouge."

Thanks, Richie. It was nice to put on a quality, decent paying, handicapped 1P tourny. I haven't ever heard of another one like it; at least in Dixie.
I think that the fellow you are referring to is Harry Farrell, the father of the top player, Jamie Farrell. Reportedly the room in Baton Rouge has gone down hill, but the owner is not interested in keeping up the equipment. Too bad-- Baton Rouge has a great 1P history.

For any of you who might be interested. There was a nice little TV spot on WLOX in Gulfport prior to the tournament. It evidently aired on Saturday evening.
I checked the WLOX archives, but unfortunately I couldn't find the video coverage. There is, however, a print story here:
