Here's some more.. Grady's captions are below the picture.
1061
Cole Dixon, great west coast 9 Ball player. A ton of gamble and a stroke to match. I'm lobbying to get him in the action Catagory HOF. By the way Oscar, if you read this we should nominate your Dad.
1062
The wrap party after "Thr Color Of Money", Jo Ann Woodward whose face you can't see and across the table Mastrontonio
1063
Round Lake Mike", a highrolling shortstop playing "Freddie the Beard". Behing Mike is Doc Holliday, then Ronnie and me
1064
Pete Margo, Fred Astaire and Danny D. Astaire loved pool and this photo was taken when a straight pool tournament was held at the Elks club in So-cal.
1065
Minnesota Fats
I looked at all those photos from the link you posted in the original thread, Red. If I knew none of them, the guy I would least like to play for anything important, just based on appearances, is Marcel Camp. The guy just has that "look" about him. :D

Skin, thanks for posting that pic. It brings back some memories of a truly exceptional pool player, character and friend. :)

To me, that does not look like Cole. It looks like another guy I cannot think of his name...

I thought the same thing Steve. 1st Cole had dirty blond hair I thought. He would have looked alot younger back then. I'm assuming this photo is 20 years old or somewhere thereabouts.
While his grip and stroke has Cole tendancies to it, it just doesn't look like him.
The whole picture has a photoshopped look to it with the head and all, but I seriously doubt that:D
We'll have to have Grady look at it again and tell us if he made a mistake or whether he remembers this time frame of the picture.
I know I have another picture of Cole, but can't find it anywhere... here's another picture of him from this site.

I played Cole numerous times since he was 16 years old until he became top notch and we became good friends. This picture doesn't look like him at all. We need clarification.

There is no chance, what so ever that this isn't Cole Dickson. I'll lay a million to one on this being Cole. Actually i'm surprised that The Beard hasn't confirmed that this is Cole, he knows him almost as well as I do.

You're looking at the wrong photo, Willy!? The one with Charlie Devalliere is of course, Cole. The picture they are talking about is in post #1, attachment 1061. Dat aint no way Cole. Dat aint remotely Cole. I was just with him last week. Take a look at that pic. It aint even close. That's two misses in row for you today. You missed Danny Gartner and now Cole. You must be getting very old. Maybe OldschoolPool is right about not trusting your posts or your memory anymore.

hehe... just so we're all on the same page here.
I posted 5 pics in the 1st post of this thread. The very first pic is labelled Cole Dickson. Steve started out by saying he didn't believe it was him, I also did not believe it looked like him. We were both wanting someone to confirm it. In my post where I said it didn't look like him, I also posted a different picture of Cole Dickson, that is clearly him.
Now I think some us aren't reading the posts correctly and I think some of us are debating whether the picture I posted later on it this thread, is Cole or not. There is not debate on that picture... the picture in debate is the VERY FIRST picture in this thread, which I will repost below.
Billy says it is 100% Cole (not sure of which pic he is talking about)
Frank says he doesn't think it's him (sounds like Franks' talking about the right picture)
Freddy says Billy's on drugs and there is no way that is him, that Billy's talking about the wrong picture
Grady says it's him, no doubt.
So........ is this picture Cole Dickson, or not?:D
So far, we have Freddy, NH Steve, myself and Frank, that do not think it's him... Grady and Billy, are you sticking to it is him, in the picture below?

You're the one whoi is losing it, pal. I'm not looking at the wrong picture, and it is Cole Dickson. So you were with him last week, I was with him when he looked like the guy in this picture, and i'll still lay a million to one, and pay.
In regard to the Danny Gartner picture, yes that is Danny to the left of Crane, my bad. I was thinking he was speaking of the player to the left of Ronnie, and that is Taylor.

To whom it may concern.....
I have never seen Billy THIS adamant about a subject before! Considering how right he is when he's NOT betting Beard shirts, I would just go ahead and caption the pic as Mr. Cole Dixon!
If Billy believes this is Mr Dixon THAT strongly, to bet real "Beard" shirts, THAT is just too strong to argue with! :D

I do not know Cole, but when I study the faces, I would have to say it is him(assuming the one in the other pic is def him). I put them side by side on my computer and studied the facial structure, etc., and I say it's him. You can't go by hair color, etc., you have to look at the facial bones and features. If it's not, it's his twin.:) :)

Well, you just noticed what I had noticed, that made me believe it was Cole, in regards to his grip and elbow positioning. He has what I would characterize as a piston for a stoke. No other movements from his body on his stroke except from his elbow down and it just goes straight forward, straight back.
And since your willing to buy 200.00 t-shirts and lay a million to one and give up 4 balls, I'm going to go ahead and mark it down as Cole Dixon, which is what Grady had it in the 1st place.:D

I'm in with Cardone here. That is not a very flattering picture of him, but it IS him. I've known him since he was a pup, and saw him often through the years. Tony Sprague (RIP) and I, steered him around when he came to Phx about 10 years ago. That pic is definately from several years prior to that time.
I think the hair is throwing everyone off. His hair was dishwater blond in those years, but it could be the lighting, or maybe his girlfriend du joir gave him a dye job to go undercover...not impossible...;)

Doc; Allen Gilbert AKA (AL Gold) was a very good friend of mine and was a great money player in 3 cush. The reason it can't be him is, he was a LEFTY AKA (Lefty AL Gold). Al did get down a little lower on the cue ball than most 3c players.

On the other hand, no tellin' what the "next bet" would be. I suspect it would be something like you'd want me to lay $2 to your $1M that you've never been to Pittsurgh, PA. 2. Who do you persoanlly rate as the top 5 3C players ever?

Where did Cole get the fat head and the black hair?
Granted that is how he held the butt of the cue, but he was, and still is, skinny with a thin blonde head. What was he on birth control pills to fatten his head up like that?
Is this some kind of a trap that Grady and Cardone cooked up? Billy laying those kind of odds and Grady agreeing is very suspicious.
I was just with Cole. His head is still skinny and his hair is still blonde.
Clare, you next job is going to be with William Peterson on CSI.

This was my thinking also, Beard. Given that Cardone would never lay 1M to 1 --even that George Washington is dead-- I became suspicious from the start. Now that he has continued with this folly, I'm sure there's some type of trap brewing.;)
What DID give me pause, is that Clare thinks that the picture is Cole, based upon her comparing the facial structures of a known picture of Cole and the one in question. Women have the innate ability to analyze facial structures for the slightest variations.
I wish someone would contact the Colester. If the pic is him, the reason it's deceiving (aside from the dark hair) is due to the view being from a different perspective than the other common pictures of him out there. Most are full face frontal shots, whereas this one is viewed from the top down.

Billy, I'm proud of you-- that you've stopped eating doughnuts. Maybe we can get the rest of that tum-tum of yours down a little bit.:D But the bread and the cheese on the cheeseburger would be too hi-cal as well. How about a nice imported bottled water and a small salad instead? (no extra dressing)

I have a question about Cole Dixon.
I live in Alexandria, VA and the old timers said that Cole just fired every ball in and never worried about shape and that he hit everything 100 miles an hour...and rarely missed. Does that sound about right? Just curious..and they do describe his technique this with an air of reverance, not disdain.

I'd guess the picture is Cole...forget the hair, and it looks like an older version of the same guy.
He does remind me of Gilbert a bit.
Since 3-C has been brought up, here's a Gilbert story:
Gilbert was playing an event in CA and won the tourney. An asian man and his backer come in and ask if anyone wants to play. Allen agrees to play to 50 for what he won in the tourney.
Of course it turns out to be Sang Lee before anyone knew what a world beater he was. Allen starts getting drilled, and then leaves the chalk on the table after shooting. Sang picks up the chalk, walks over to Allen, does a slight bow with his head, and then goes back to the table.
Allen later leaves the chalk on the table again, hoping to throw Sang off....Sang walks it over, bows his head politely, and returns it.
Allen does it a third time later, he's getting KILLED at this point, Sang is scoring more than double what Allen is.
Sang picks up the chalk, walks it 80 feet away to other end of the pool hall (California Billiards in San Jose I think) and puts the chalk on a pool table. Walks back and takes his shot, lol.
Sang won 50 to less than 20. I was told this story by my friend Tom Costello who used to go watch all the big tourneys they had in the Bay Area.

How about this bet? The next time we meet (anyone that bets) either at a tournament or wherever the winner of the bet will receive a favor from the loser ( like get me a soda, or sandwhich)and if I lose the bet I will pay two favors.

Billy,
What is really frightening here is that we have a player of considerable note who even those who have known him his entire life can't for certain make their minds up about. How does that make you feel about playing the next stranger you send our way?
I would not have recognised him with no name attached. I have only seen him a about 5 times over the years but the visual accuity of all these pool players means you may be onto something! Die your hair green, shave that face or add a goatee and you may have a whole new source of income. Next tournament, introduce yourself as Fred Astair or Barack Obama and have at 'em! :)

A fellow who seemed a stranger to me came over and asked to play nine ball. Although I didn't recognize him, when he began to stutter I knew it was Billy Weir. Good disguise though. ;)

I guess I just happen to know what Cole looks like more than anyone on this site, (along with Grady) so what i'm going to do is call Cole and ask him to respond. But before he does, does anyone want my bet?
How about this bet? The next time we meet (anyone that bets) either at a tournament or wherever the winner of the bet will receive a favor from the loser ( like get me a soda, or sandwhich)and if I lose the bet I will pay two favors.
Here is a chance for The Beard and The Good Doctor to get a little free room service.:D
Freddy and Doc: PLEASE take him up on this and, if you win, ask for a foot massage at the DCC. :)

Fwiw if it is him, he is the master of disguise. The picture looks to be from the 60's or70's - and he looks younger NOW than in the picture. The pc I can see of him, in Eddie Robins book, he is WAY yong in the 60's -
I hope it IS him in the picture there, so I can just be baffled all nite.

Hate to disagree with you, NFS, but he does not look "younger" now, just different. He looks "older" now (in the pic we are discussing), just like he should.

Yes I remember the Isaly's in Hazelwood when I was a kid, I would go there 3 or 4 times a week to eat their chipped ham sandwhiches, usually followed with their chocolate almond ice cream. My brother use to order vanilla, I always got the chocolate almond, no better icecream than Isaly's. There was an Isaly's in Squirell Hill and the big one on I think the blvd.? You're right Doc, that does look a lot like Allen Gilbert. But no 3C player ever sights that low, plus, I never knew Gilbert to venture that much into pocket billiards.
Gilbert would play a little golf on the snooker table once & a while when he was Allen Gold. Early 60's if I remember right.

You may be referring to the Isaly's factory and store on the Blvd. of the Allies, which I think was in Oakland. We went there on a school trip in the late 1950's, and I went back many times as a young man.
Like you, I can almost remember each individual tile on the floor, and every scratch on the tables at the Isaly's on Washington Rd. in downtown Mt. Lebanon. Their vanilla fudge ice cream was the stuff dreams were made of. I used to go there every day after junior high school to flirt with the girls. Then I found Nick's poolroom in Dormont, and haven't been the same since.:D

Billy, I believe Doc is right. The big one was in Oakland, with quite a few others scattered about. I loved their ice cream, too, but I especially loved their milk shakes. Thanks for the link to the website, Doc. Looks like they distribute the chipped ham all over now. Great memories ! I have a feeling that if we had a chipped ham sandwich today, it would just not taste like it did back in the day.

Cole still plays the same style. All you have to do to verify is check out the One Pocket match (On Accu-Stats) he played against Rudolfo Luat at Derby City. He fired at least 2 straight backs about a hundred miles an hour that didn't even think about not going! Unfortunately a few more misses have crept into his game. Otherwise Cole would have beaten Luat rather easily.
Still...
He had a top 50 finish in One pocket
He also had a top 20 finish in 9 ball!
Very impressive given he doesn't compete regularly.

hmmm. Now this is getting tricky. It would help if I knew the approx. dates of each picture. The facial hair on the pic on the right is making it more difficult. One feature that is causing me to still say it's him: the lips.
Anyone know the dates of the pictures?
P.S. Could a reliable person possibly show him the pic and ask him if it's him?
But then again, based on my experience, you can only believe a pool player about 10% of the time. Maybe.

I been seeing that you're one of them talented, mad-scientist like genius's with what you can do with computers! Congrats sir on your talent.
Over at AZB, they have a fella named Derek Disco who is another super-genius with photo-shop or however he does what he does.
It can now be said that you're 1P.Org's answer to AZB's D-D! I'd like to see you two match up. Each of you can show & tell us all about your best "pic list" and then you guys can offer "good natured" rebuttles of who pic'ed who and when. Questions like "Was the subject who was pictured at the top of his game when he was in fact pic'ed?" "Did you announce ahead of time, before you pic'ed whoever, that you were going to pic them or did you come dressed as a plumber instead?" Lot's of potential here for a spirited competition!
:D
Seriously Cali, good job on all the photo things you've been doing for us here!

Since no one is willing to take $1,000,000 to $1.00 I will make another offer. I KNEW IT! I suspected all along that you already had an ironclad confirmation that it was in fact Cole. My point was that I'd take $1M to $1 on just about anything that might be considered a bet.;) I had initially assumed Cardone was just innocently posturing, but when he continued on, I knew for sure that he had verified his end. It's an old Pittsburgh trick... Even Freddy figured that out, and he's from Chicago.:D
I knew a pool scuff when I lived in L.A. in the late 60's, who was actually a pretty sharp bettor. He went out to watch the L.A. open one year. A very famous golfer (could have been Sam Snead) was faced with a pretty routine 3 foot putt. He was bragging to the crowd, and said "I'll bet all the money in my pocket to a dollar that I make this putt". My friend immediately shoved out a dollar from the crowd. Turns out the guy had like $3K on him! He made the putt, but the crowd had gotten real quiet, and he took about 10 minutes studying it and figuring it. Those 3 foot putts all of a sudden don't look too routine if you're laying 3000 to 1...

Doc, firstly, the post quoted on post #92 was not a response to your post, it was a response to The Beards post. Post #85 was the response to your post. Now that that's straight it's confirmed, we have action. I really don't know anything about the Hungarians, but I do know a little about the drop down, silver lined, gold plated, Brazilions.:D
And gettin money out of me is a lot easier than you think, but not here.:p

So, then, Billy, if only one person takes you up on this, he/she will get $2500 from you? I think Freddy has taken you up. Maybe Doc, too???
Not exactly, but just this one time I will pay any one person the $2,500, but they must hurry.:)

I varified my end when I initially looked at the picture, I know Cole and was positive it was him. Since then I have talked to Cole, and I got him today to look at the picture and he laughed and said " you got the nuts, of course that's me" But I really didn't need his reassurance, I was positive it was him. Matter of fact, if he would of said it wasn't him I would of bet him.:D

Wow, Now THAT'S Strong!!!!
Your next challenge is to get Cole on these forums to hang out, so we can get to know him.
If you meet any resistance, you can always bring up the fact that Artie B did it, and if Artie B can do it, Cole has no reason not to..... Or is he SCARED?:D
(Note: I don't know if that approach will work, but hey, I don't have the Brazilions or Hungarians slapping around, right now)

Not at 1M to 1 you wouldn't have, or even $2500 to "gofer"...

So it seems that Billy had some inside information on this matter. So I'm backing out of my bet for the running favors. Inside trading is as bad as wetting the balls.
