Doc mentioned an interesting proposition: Getting 12-5 from a top player. I'm wondering if most of the players who would need 12-5 from a top player would choose another game(from a top player) that I once gave up to a guy. The game was 10-5 & the break(alternate pockets). After the break he got to shoot at his hole until he missed. If he didn't like the shot after the break, he could take ball-in-hand behind the line and shoot at his pocket from there until he missed.

The games that I won usually took 30-45 minutes and the games that I lost took 5-10 minutes. It was probably the most brutal game I ever gave up. I might struggle & fight to win a game and then I would lose 3 or 4 in a row in 15 minutes. We played for two nights with a break for sleep in-between. This was a guy who could run a rack of 9-Ball if the balls were laying good. He was not a non-player. He just needed weight from me playing one-pocket.

Of course, playing 12-5 you would have to fade his(the top player) breaks also so maybe the right game for players of that caliber would be 13-4. I know of decent players(a ball under me) that played Efren like that(10-15 years ago) and it was tough.

Which game would you take? 12-5 or the game that I gave up?

dennis if iunderstand your game correctly i get the break, the first shot and you go to 10 and i go to 5. that seems like one hell of a spot.i think i would definitely take that game over standard 13-4.
my dilemma would be how to break. i want to open up balls so i can run some
yet at the same time i dont want to spreadem out too much to leave balls near your pocket.
or maybe this is the time to use coreys break?
to me the trick would be to get a quick 2or 3 and trap you good or get all 5

Well Dennis, If you INSIST on playing I'll take either:rolleyes: ...

At that level of play, I think it is too unpredictable. I think the strongest spot is BIH behind the line, if the guy has enough sense to jar 'em loose on the break ....I hate to even think about it.

Ultimately I think it depends on WHY the player is that much weaker... I know weak shotmakers who move really well....They would like the 10-5..

I think at the Cliff/Efren/Scott/etc level of[play, it would differ. I would hate to know I had to play Scott, and only run 2 balls to start, and play "8-6"...I would Want 10-5 there. Of the choices offered, that is.

The level of player I would give 10-5 to I' rather go to 8 and let them have the first few balls....Still think the spot could go WAY wrong on the right day:(

12/5 Would probably be the correct game for me with very good players, so I'd prefer to try the game you gave up and see how it went. It sounds better.

Well lit's not even close in my opinion. I'd take the game you gave up. I'm for sure gonna get 1 or 2 at least;{and possibly out} but I'd say without knowing your opponent that I am a better player than he was.

Larry,

The choice is between the game I gave up or 12-5. In the game I gave up you can also take ball-in-hand(behind the line) after you break if you wish to. You get to shoot till you miss.

You'd be surprised at how many times no good shot comes up after the break.

When a player who needs this game does take ball-in-hand he will most likely be shooting a long shot. This was my opponents weak point. He dogged some of them because the balls were broken up and if he missed the first shot from behind the line I would get quite a few balls. He was probably 50-50 on the long shots from behind the line.

I'll say again, this guy could and did run many 5's on me over the nights we played. He was not Quad:) . He did not know advanced one-pocket but he could make some balls.

I was just curious as to which game most people thought was more weight.

It does sound good Rod and there's no tricks or gimmicks involved either. I might lean towards the 10-5 game also with good players.

I understand about the balls being spread. The skill level and ability to break well, have a lot to do with how it goes. I have given 8/6, break and first shot many times years ago to people who didn't know one pocket. When they miss you can catch up quickly.
