Larry,

I have a few funny stories about old Mac, which I will share, (but not right now) from his later days in LA... Popcorn used to send him out to some action spots with me in my car, and my only job was to keep him sober,...sort of like the fox guarding the hen house ;) ...He was a real character, and still played pretty good, well into his later years... I'm sure he's long gone now..(or 100 yrs. old..)

Gotta go...I'm in action again...

Larry, I've been on trips with him and didn't know his name was Angus. All I ever knew him to be called was Mac, Sarge and Blackie. He was 70 yrs. young when I was around him. I believe he was a carney when very young, then did a full stint in the military. He was I believe from Maine. He was about the only pool player that I knew who thought Mosconi was an ok guy. He said when he was in the VA in milwaukee after having a lung removed that mosconi came by and put some money in his commissary. They had known each other when young. About his pool, he always shot with an open bridge and played very rapidly. I asked Mosconi about him and he said " Mac is the best straight pool player among all the hustlers." An older player than myself said Mac beat Jimmy Caras in a money match after Caras won the title in the late 1940's.
Jersey Red told me a story about Mac. He said after he retired from the army he went to Lawton Okla. He knew Bert Walker who had the pool room there from his stay during his service. He convinced Bert to take his wife on a vacation and told him he would manage the room til he returned. Their were two housemen working so it wouldn't be a problem. Bert walker was on all the roadmens list and would go off for a few hundred to most anyone who came in. Mac went to the room everyday and hit balls on the back table. When anyone came in looking for a game or the owner, the house man sent them back. For a month or so every pool hustler who came to Houston or Dallas said "Man that old guy in Lawton must of really improved, he beat me like a Puerta Rican stepchild." ;)
Rod.
PS, He did like the sauce in his old age. It didn't seem to effect his play unless really out of control. I saw him drinking when he beat Canadian Pete on a bar table. He beat him so fast it was almost unbelievable.
