I had my first One Pocket experience this past Saturday.

I was playing 8 ball with this guy at Mr Cues 2 in Atl. As the time passed he started to tell me how One Pocket was a popular game there. After he explained the rules to me, I figured I would give it a try.

It took a few games, but after watching him set up and pick off like 6 shots in a row, I figured I better learn some defense. Next thing you know, I was leaving whitey on the rail or put it snug up against the pack on his side. It was a lot of fun. :D

I wound up watching some matches later on that night. I was blown away. I loved the strategy aspects of the game. It's not enough to be a great shooter. You have to plan ahead and know when defend vs. attack. Set up your shots etc...

A patient man's game!

I have been on this site before reading interviews on Grady, Bugs and the article on Jersey Red's HOF induction etc... I love the great stories!

And now I am soaking up the info on one pocket.

Questions:

- I am really interested in 14.1, Banks and One Pocket. Can you recommend anyone in Atlanta or San Diego that I could learn from w/o breaking my bank acct? Any leagues or groups of people that get together and play?

- What is the most influential One Pocket article, book, video tape etc.. that helped you with your game? Its not a one pocket book, but I really dig the Straight Pool Bible by Cranfield. Everytime I read it I pick up another nugget of info.

- Interested in your opinion: How did playing for money help/hurt your game?

If you like betting money on anything, then betting on yourself can only help your game.

The 2nd in a series of two one-pocket books, I think it's called "Shots, Moves and Strategies" is the absolute nuts when it comes to one-pocket books. The first book is more anecdotal, with stories and illustrations of wild shots. I think that one is called "Winning One Pocket", but I forget since I don't own them. The 2nd book covers A through Z in one pocket, from the break to the last ball on the table, and gives different shot selections for the same scenario from current and past champions.

(1) in San Diego, Ernie Rivas plays decent and won't make you bet too high. Shane Manaole is more of a hustler, but he's a nice guy and might help you if he sees you're a beginner and want to learn without betting too high.

(2) Like senor says, the Eddie Robin books (Winning One Pocket and Shots, Moves & Strategies. As far as videos go, I would get Grady Mathews' video on the end game (I forget what it's called) and I would also get some one pocket matches from Accu-Stats (www.accu-stats.com)

(3) Playing for money helped my game immensely and hurt my bank account immensely in the beginning

Thanks for the info guys! I am looking forward to picking up some accu stats matches. I saw that there were some recommended matches so I will start with those.

BackPocket9Ball, Do you know if either of those guys you mentioned post on this board?

I agree with ya on playing for money. I never really played for cash in the past. However, I have since had a change of heart.
