in onepocket alot of times you want to hit the object ball fuller to control cue ball movement so you to have to fabricate the angle for the bank with spin

As the little guy in the German WW-II helmet on Laugh-IN used to say, ...
"Innterrrresting" .

Well, funny thing happened today. Showed up early for our bitty 9-ball tourney
like I usually do. Did my regular warm-up routine that I mentioned way back
when, then started shooting a few racks of 15 ball rotation to get ready for the
more position sensitive game. When the opportunity to bank came up I would
attempt it. 60/40, miss/make. Practiced the drill lll alluded to at the beginning
of the week. Things were so-so at best.

Game time was fun, truly fun. I do not think it would be repeatable but I was
doing some outstanding Banks. I was very fortunate and extremely lucky.
Didn't win, got 2ed. but folks were watchin' .

I was 'seeing' the angles today, managed a few up & backs, several cross side/corners
and a few object ball on or next to side rail and was able to
cross it into side pocket by doing an edge to edge hit. Felt comfortable when
getting down on the shots, only micro adjustments with bridge hand when
down for shot only when alignment didn't 'feel' just right. Once down, a few
practice strokes final check on CB for where, then back and short pause,
swing and hit follow through. Watch CB contact OB and OB fall into pocket
and CB roll for position on next ball ... or not. Made some shots that really
looked like I just picked up a cue only 5 seconds ago. My attempt at
achieving balance in the universe

Will be doing 8-ball this coming Sat. Then more practice come Mon.

Any thoughts and constructive criticism gladly welcomed.

its great that you were able to let your subconcious mind do the work while playing
your practice is allowing your brain (its a wonderful thing) to learn what works and what doesnt
.if you dont try to "overide" the programming while playing you will do fine..:)
great progress hank...yahoooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hank,
Sounds like you made quite a break through. A freedom so to speak. Take care, great thread, great news.

Thanks Larry for getting in here and sticking it out. It sure is nice to help someone out.

Hank, keep us informed on how its going! thanks, Whitey

Well, after thinking on this a bit more I'm of the opinion that it was a negative
type personality that was a 'guest' and being loud and obnoxious that sorta
triggered my intensity of thought and determination to have them "sit down &
shut the hell up." The type that thinks that more volume equates to a more
important place they hold in society

Anyway today is 8-ball, I'll still go through my normal warm-up stuff and throw
in some bank drills as well, the one that Larry mentioned (distance apart and
using English for throw), and maybe a line of OB's on the Left diamond line &
the CB shooting from the Right diamond line for 2:1 ...

Whitey, I spoke with the Quartermaster (treasurer), about funding some new
rails and a re-cover. First words outta his mouth were about the expense. My
reply was how much money do the tables generate? They only charge 25
cents / rack but over a length of time it can add up. He told me that they do
have a separate listing for each (we have 2), and he'd look into it. He's a
player and was muttering after Thurs. tourney about the condition of the
tables so thought it would be a good time to plant a seed or 2. Ideally, the
tables should be self-sufficient in that by the time they'll need another set of
rails and a re cover they should have generated that amount of income. He
liked my idea, said he'd bring it up at the monthly meeting which is this
morning.

i hope you get those tables fixed.
maybe you can make a deal where you chip in $20-50 as credit towards table time
with alittle extra for paying up front....:)
another idea i had depending on the number of pool players that regularly use the room would be to have $1-5 dollar donation can towards the repairs.....may not fly ...its still pool players......:D

Well, Thursday was definitely an "Instroke" day. Yesterday was more of a
"Nermel" day. I shot well, won, but the precision wasn't as sharp with the
banks that were attempted / made was about 90% / 10%. I know ain't ...
no one perfect. I did notice that when I absolutely needed to make a bank or
kick I was more intense and focused and those would go right in. So, reckon I
need to focus more, more often.

Practice on Monday, anything to add? Hints, tips, thoughts???

Thanks for your help with this.

At $0.25 a pop that would be a lot of table time :heh

We'll see.

I can talk with the QM (Quartermaster), on Monday, see what he's got to say
and what if any decision has been made. Thanks for the suggestions I'll pass
them on.

Ok, practice day, started with the usual, find stroke (I had one last week???),
find speed control, lll's straight back drill, 2:1 drill, 3 racks of 15 ball rotation.
Well, then someone asked if I'd play them a game or 2. Ok, I say ...
drunk at 11:30 am ... made it through 2 games, he left. throw 6 balls on table,
BIH figure out a pattern and see if I can get all 6 in without a miss. Did that
twice when a mature woman's voice ask if I'd like to play a game or 2. NOT
drunk :D. She was rusty but you could tell she knew what she was doing.
After she left I packed things up and came home. I didn't /don't usually shoot
as well when it's a "fun" game but have noticed I tighten right up when there is
a goal like tourney or other reason as when I don't much care for a person.

Practice ~ 3.5 hours. Non practice 1 hour.

Thursday (yesterday), was a decent day, still the attempts to success ratio was
something like 3 or 4 made of 10 attempts. I know it doesn't just 'happen', it
takes time and patience as well as work on my part.
Thanks for all of your help, the small nuggets of information and recommendations
of 'things to try' are truly appreciated and will be used in warm-ups anything
else y'all think of will be gratefully received.

try to set the object ball on a marked spot so its in the same place every time
place the cue ball in a set spot on the 2:1
practice that for awhile...after you are making those comfortably
move the cue ball a ball or 2 from your original spot mark this new position for the cue ball now practice that angle ( it will be a "passover" or "cut" bank)
move the cue ball same distance from the original spot the opposite way
and practice that
this will help in getting a feel for the cut induced spin generated when cutting a ball and how you need to correct where you aim for it
you are already getting a feel on how to "turn" the ball
now you will be getting a feel for what happens when you dont use english
hope this helps

Larry, thanks for the new drill, have sticky backed paper a$$holes available
for repeatable positions. This is doable. Let ya know how it goes.

That's what this is about getting some repeatable results on a more consistent
basis. For 58 years I've been getting by on "feel", but before I pass on I want
to know and be able to to be more consistent and know the "why" when I do
miss. It's all part of the puzzle and I kept those pieces on the side for way to long.

You have to know the diamond system to bank multiple rail banks. I am talking about some 2 rail, 3, and 4 rail banks and on up, there is no way around it.

Example on my table; the classical 4 rails in the corner off the end rail, the shooting angle is from the center of the side pocket to the first diamond end rail. This is what I call a 'natural bank'. Meaning; any where the ob is lying on the end rail then this is the angle you shoot the 4 rail bank. Not all multi-rail banks are natural. This is a must bank to know when playing 9-ball.
I was watching DCC bank players trying this shot and they were missing, but they never took the time to line up the shot, fatal mistake. On a Diamond table the angle is probably to 3/4 - 7/8 of a diamond coming off the end rail?

The classical short 3 rails in the side is also a 'natural bank'. On my table the angle is from the center of the side pocket to 1-1/2 diamond. Any where the ob is lying on that side rail between 1-1/2 diamond to corner pocket then this is the angle to shoot the bank on.

The long 2 rail bank off the side cushion into the corner, Z banks, long 3 & 4 rails in the side, short 4 rails in the side, 3 rails in the corner off near side rail (great OP bank, got to love it), all these banks have an angle that needs to be known.

The hardest bank for me, when I was doing banks decades ago, was the 2 rail bank doubling out of the corner off the end rail w/ ob going kitty corner across table to the far corner. The reason was, it seemed that the angle would change depending on where the ob was lying on the end rail, no consistent angle a guy could rely on, not a natural bank.

Know your angles and hit it and the ob will go in, but it has to be exact, this is no guessing game. Good luck, have fun! Whitey

Well, yesterday was 8-ball. Not as much banking action but I attempted a few when they weren't really needed. Made a ratio of about 3 or 4 of 10 attempts.
I should be able to work on the 'new' drill that lll mentioned. The one for passover
and cut banks. Most of the ones that I was able to make yesterday were due to
the 'turning' drill that I'm getting more consistent with.

Tomorrow is Practice day (free tables), so, some more :frus as well as some :lol.

Thanks again for your patience and thoughts.

Well, spent about an hour with the new (to me), drill doing the cut/pass-over
drill. Really amazing how just a small amount of adjustment it takes to miss
or hit the pocket. I was setting it up with only 1 diamond between Start and
pocket, had OB on line from pocket to diamond next to side pocket and 1
diamond away from the rail. CB was set on the line on the Center Line of the
table and alternate spots were 1 ball dia. either side of original spot. Next time
I'll try with 2 diamond separation and larger separation across the table.

Speed was critical as was the amount of cut/pass-over. Things are a lot closer
on a Bar Box. Gonna need to find a 9 footer to see how one compares to the
other as far as the speed sensitivity goes.

I've got a lot to ponder...

Thanks once more for your support and thoughts.
