You got no chance! The track edge is out-of-sight and pays nowhere near true odds. There's so much hanky-panky with trainers, riders, etc. you never know what's going on. EVERY steady horse player I know is a brokester and is always trying to borrow money. Do yourself a favor and take up bowling!

first you can't bet every race every day--only when you have an angle. bet a horse whose last race was his first on the turf( grass).if he did not like the surface he'll look out of form, but he'll have plenty of energy left because he wasn't extended, especially if he's at a shorter distance.you'll always get an overlay.you can thank(and pay) me later

Betting horses is just like a job , you need to work at it very hard ! most horseplayers go busted because they do not know what there doing and there just gambling . maybe only 2 % of horseplayers are ahead of the game in their life , maybe 5 % break out even . the rest just donate ! there is'nt any total system to beat the horses , but I would recommend watching trainers who win and eliminate low percentage trainers and you must watch replays to look for troubled horses in there last start . by the way I'm in the 2 % and I'm busted ! but I've lived all my life without working and have lived very high at times thanks to the track . I've traveled all over and had a great life and even bought race horses from my winnings ! bottom line I'll probably end up broke . the money I've won is the money I've spent to live every year of my life which is an awful lot , most working people could not have lived my lifestyle for 40 years . but like the other poster said find another pastime more or less , unless you can really learn the game .

race track phil ( p s guess you can figure out why I replied )

Very nice post!

You know, one of the few things Cornbread DIDN'T do, was bet at the track. the effort you guys put in was the effort he used to stir up pool action. It's hard to do it all and he knew it.

Red would always say, "If ahmm gonna bet on a horse, I'll just drive by the track and throw mah muuthafuken bankroll over the fence and be done".

He ALWAYS pulled for the track crew to make a score but don't we all.

There were only two legends in the annals of Chicago horse racing history that were also pool players, Race Track Rick and the afore mentioned, Race Track Phil. Believe his words, he speaks the truth.

horserace tutorial for luckybreaky.......

horserace tutorial for luckybreaky.......

Everyone else cover your eyes! This is a secret.
First, never bet on thoroughbreds unless you are a horse owner and know horses intimately. Always bet on quarterhorses..... the elements of the race that are variable count more in a shorter race.... in the long thoroughbred races it's more than 90% horse that gets the job done. Quarterhorses only.
Second, the system. Now if you win big you owe me one. I have never lost on this system and the least I ever won in a day was $2 (and by won I mean net receipts after paying my way in, food, racing form, and other bets during the day including the pick six bet that you should always do for fun.) ALWAYS bet the EXACTA BOX bet. You pick the winner and runner up in a race, so that's a min. $2 bet. Then you reverse the same bet, so that's $4. Go to your racing form and consider every variable to pick which horses you think are underrated ( a longer odds horse.) then you pair that horse with the favorite in each race. You are likely to win enough on one bet to cover your whole day if you bet in 6 races ($24 in bets/day.) Exacta box away!!!-J

horseracing tip from tsk7878 is dead on and ....

horseracing tip from tsk7878 is dead on and ....

what he said goes with my system...... you should never bet in every race. that's why I recommended the exacta box in about 6 races in a day. betting every race is stoopid with two o's. I usually skip betting on the first race to use the time examining the variables in the racing form... you wouldn't pick a car or a woman based on one variable would you? or a bet on a sports team based on one player's ability? then why would you pick a horse for one variable? likewise, when you look at cars, do you look at every car with equal consideration, or do you skip over the Gremlin's and Pacers? (Or for that matter any SUV... fill in name of any sucky roadhog SUV here_________ .) So you don't wanna bet in every race. Stoopid to do so- John

Best tip you can get is get help for your problem. Get over this habit quick. Or you could send me your money and let me bet it for you and I would send you your winnings.

I never, ever win money at the movies.....

I never, ever win money at the movies.....

...... yeah, gambling on horses or anything else can be a problem, but almost everyone with a heartbeat wants more than one form of entertainment..... when I go to the movies I lose my money 100% of the time and I can't even talk to the woman I am with! Same goes for ball games due to noise and idiots standing up. And I have never had to wait long to get out of the parking lot at a horse track. Now if you are talking about DOG TRACKS, then you probably should take Cornbread's advice, as documented on this thread, and throw your money out the window and pass on by..... at least you wont have the stress of losing even when you when at the stinkin dog track......

You right about that, TJ!! Once in a great while though, we have to visit the track in Mobile to contribute to the Greyhound Retirement Fund, where the odds are only slightly more favorable than the Louisiana Lottery. At least you don't have to sit there and watch a jockey pull up on your nag comin' around the 3rd turn...

This is one sad post. The majority of people telling a guy how to make money on the horses...

Sad.. Sad... Sad... Sad....

Here's some tips. The odds in favor of you winning at dogs or horses is virtually nil. You might win once in a while, but you will generally be broke, just like generations of champion poolplayers before you.

If you MUST gamble at something other than pool, go to a casino.

Does the casino have poker? If not, then does it have Blackjack? If so, are you a master card counter? Do you have a huge bankroll?

If the casino does not have poker AND you do not meet the requirements for BlackJack, then leave the casino.

Do not play the lottery with more money than you are willing to flush down the toilet. The lottery is a voluntary tax on the poor. (Generally)

Hope this helps...

Lot's of ways to win at horses, almost none work. If you know the "jockey's race" and a jockey it is a lock. I did very well betting the dogmeat races looking for a little class, and often a horse that is shortening up that race or the race before. Never bet a horse that is lengthening his distance for the first time. They win, but maybe one time in a hundred.

Knowing the horses, jockeys, and trainers does increase your odds of winning. However, as a former horse owner that had many friends that were horse owners, I knew many jockeys and trainers that were constantly broke because they bet the nags. The fact that they didn't win when they lived at the track every day was a big hint that I took to heart.

If you really want to go to the track and try to win, get the form the day before. Pick the three races that look the most promising, maybe two alternates. Only bet three races! Learn what a horse looks like when it is ready to go. You also have to know the condition it was in when it ran previous races or this means little. If the horse you like looks like it is in racing shape that day and isn't going off a heavy favorite, bet it across. Only when two or three horses are clearly the class of the field do I go with an exacta playing them both ways or boxing them. Usually a no hoper sneaks in and cleans out that money regardless. The folks on the inside collect big, everyone else was a chump.

One final tip. Most of the big time trainers and owners use runners to place their bets if they bet at the track so seeing them at the window doesn't lower the odds. Many bookies lay off bets at the track too, themselves or more commonly using runners. Knowing who these runners are and jumping in line behind them can pay big.

You won't have much time left for one-pocket if you play the ponies with even the faintest hope of success, a lot of hours involved. I'm well ahead lifetime, but it is because I plunged far deeper than I should have once when I was drunk and a longshot that I had let someone talk me out of betting three months before romped home in the mud. Yet another thing you have to know, how each horse runs on various tracks and in various conditions. After you know all of this, if you bet quarterhorses, all can be won or lost in the quarter second after the gates pop open. A slip, stumble, or awkward jockey and even the best are toast.

I loved the horses themselves but with off track betting all around me I haven't bet a dime off track or in the last twenty-five years since I have been outside the daily loop.

(edit: Sorry to bring this to the top. I lurk here occasionally but rarely post. I didn't notice the thread was months old!)

bettting the thouroughbreds

As a long time wagerer on greyhounds and horses, I would recommend David Davidowitz's book to you, entitled "betting the thouroughbreds", this gentleman was a very close friend of andy beyer, who came up with the speed ratings used so prominately by the "Daily Racing Form" I think to be sucessfull gambler on horses you need to know a lot, and be willing to invest a lot of research time as well. David's book will tell you everything you need to know to give yourself a "fighting" chance. If you read it, let me know what you think. Sincerely, Charles Harrigan:

Betting the horses

Betting the horses

At the Cozy Cue on warren&greenfield I heard Cornbread Red give his opinion on going to the track. Which is what many of the guys did at 5p.m. each day. He said "I'll go bet on them when they come here and bet on me". This was in the mid to late 80's and it still rings true today. Bet on yourself or get a job.

A great line from "The Bank Dick" Fields to the bank examiner: "Do you bet the ponies?" Bank examiner "No" Fields:"That's a very good system"
