Bank the 12 ball cross to your side and leave the cueball on the end rail. Make him shoot the combo or play safe. IMO this is not a time to pound the ball out of his hole.

Was this the year that Marco won it?

Good comments, Billy. Was that in Roanoke, VA that year? I'm not surprised that the crowd thinned way down. The first game of their 7 game match took 90 minutes!

Okay, folks. Y'all had some pretty good suggestions, despite the bad bind that Marco was in. He did shoot at the 5-12 combo take-out. Here was the way it ended up:

This was a very nice reversal of the break. But I got to wondering how they could exactly wind up like that, and Billy I. & Ronnie Allen were wondering the same thing. Turns out he hit it inaccurately, causing the 5 to fan the 9, then hit the top of the 12. Here is a freeze frame of the shot in progress, then a line drawing of the key balls:

So Marco got a little lucky there, which we all do once in awhile on these type of shots.

But for my money, the best shot is the one advocated by KYBanks and Jerry M. Bank the stripe over to your side and roll the CB up to the head rail, leaving a straight in combo for the opponent.

Buddy won the one I am talking about.
It was 1998 in Baton Rouge at Gradys Legends of One Pocket.
I guess it is possible they played each other more than once in the finals but I find it highly unlikely.
Marco played great in this tournament and I always felt he should have won.
The format was supposed to be race to 4 but they both agreed to three because it was so late, and nobody was there.
Buddy got 3 very fortuitous double kisses on cross banks low on the table,
            in the last game.
If any of those leave a shot , Marco would have probably been champ.

I guess I assumed they only ever played once in a finals , the one I watched was at Gradys Tournament of Champions 1998 in Baton Rouge Louisiana .
I was Gradys best buddy for 3 or 4 days because I had a dice hand that he got in on, that lasted about 45 minutes.
The casino was at war with another one and they were giving 200 to 1 behind the line odds.
              Wheeeeeeoooooooooo!

Yeah, Buddy prevailed 4-3 in the 1998 World's, which I believe was in Roanoke. In the 1998 Legends in Baton Rouge Buddy lost to Shannon Daulton in the finals. Buddy and Marco may have tangled in that one too.

Then in Grady's 2004 Gulf Coast Classic (in Gulfport, Miss.), Marco Marquez did beat Buddy in the finals. Mike Surber came in third. Lil' John asked for 9-7 from Marco, but he wouldn't give it to him, which surprised me.

That surprises me too... may have been stalling for 98 or had another game lined up that would kill his action. Marco was the firs real pro I saw play.

I must be all goofed up , I would have bet a million dollars it was 1998 legends of one Pocket Baton Rouge and Buddy and Marco played in the final, and Buddy won.
It was held in a beautiful Atrium, and that tournament, was the most fun I ever had, without a beautiful woman involved.

Billy, we do have a "Record Book" listing of all the major 1P championships starting with Johnston City, up through the present. Just go to the Hall of Fame menu at the top of the page. It's a real nice listing. You've probably been to several of the events.

I did some checking and I am afraid the record book is wrong. Sorry if it seems I am being argumentative but I think someone just copied the info incorrectly.

I think you're right, Billy. I went back and checked my DVD of the Hall/Marquez finals. It was at the 1998 Legends at the Bell of Baton Rouge. Buddy beat Marco in the finals 4-3.

In the "record book" menu, the 1998 World's and Legends winners are probably reversed.

It was my mistake for incorrectly labelling the Legends as the World's.

                              I'll notify CincyKid.
