Good comments, Billy. Was that in Roanoke, VA that year? I'm not surprised that the crowd thinned way down. The first game of their 7 game match took 90 minutes!

~Doc

I guess I assumed they only ever played once in a finals , the one I watched was at Gradys Tournament of Champions 1998 in Baton Rouge Louisiana .
I was Gradys best buddy for 3 or 4 days because I had a dice hand that he got in on, that lasted about 45 minutes.
The casino was at war with another one and they were giving 200 to 1 behind the line odds.
Wheeeeeeoooooooooo!

Yeah, Buddy prevailed 4-3 in the 1998 World's, which I believe was in Roanoke. In the 1998 Legends in Baton Rouge Buddy lost to Shannon Daulton in the finals. Buddy and Marco may have tangled in that one too.

Then in Grady's 2004 Gulf Coast Classic (in Gulfport, Miss.), Marco Marquez did beat Buddy in the finals. Mike Surber came in third. Lil' John asked for 9-7 from Marco, but he wouldn't give it to him, which surprised me.

That surprises me too... may have been stalling for 98 or had another game lined up that would kill his action. Marco was the firs real pro I saw play.

I must be all goofed up , I would have bet a million dollars it was 1998 legends of one Pocket Baton Rouge and Buddy and Marco played in the final, and Buddy won.
It was held in a beautiful Atrium, and that tournament, was the most fun I ever had, without a beautiful woman involved.
Lol, talk about the Mandela Effect

I do have the Hall/Jones 9 game match from the 1998 World's. When I get time I'll go through and pick out a frame or two...

Billy, we do have a "Record Book" listing of all the major 1P championships starting with Johnston City, up through the present. Just go to the Hall of Fame menu at the top of the page. It's a real nice listing. You've probably been to several of the events.

I did some checking and I am afraid the record book is wrong. Sorry if it seems I am being argumentative but I think someone just copied the info incorrectly.

I think you're right, Billy. I went back and checked my DVD of the Hall/Marquez finals. It was at the 1998 Legends at the Bell of Baton Rouge. Buddy beat Marco in the finals 4-3.

In the "record book" menu, the 1998 World's and Legends winners are probably reversed.

It was my mistake for incorrectly labelling the Legends as the World's.

I'll notify CincyKid.

I'm thinking there were two Legends of One Pocket tournaments in Baton Rouge in 1998. I have on DVD the match where Daulton beat Hall, and it's marked 'finals'. Grady was the promoter each time, as I remember. He hung around the local pool room for several days, trying to sell enough cues to make the premium for a public liability coverage.

I recall some complaints in the first one about the skylight in the Atrium making it too bright inside, so the second one was held in the evenings, and turned out not to be as well received as the first. I was just a kid, of course, in 1998.

Some of you may remember (Doc?) the big crowd of players and stake horses that congregated at Lambert's RBDs on South Choctaw and stayed and played and gambled high for several weeks, after the first event at the river boat. No doubt one of the best such rodeos of all time. Big names all over the place.

Unless I am mistaken also, there were 2 that year in the atrium.
One was in Feb i think and the other November.
I also believe one was the legends of One Pocket won by Buddy vs Marco and the other was the world one pocket championship , won by Shannon vs Buddy.
Easy to see how it got crossed up.

Yeah, evidently one was billed as the "Legends of One-Pocket", the other the "World One-Pocket Championship". The "World" was in February 11-15, where Buddy prevailed from hill/hill over JJ.

Bill, I didn't move to Dixie until 2000, so I missed both BR events, Lamberts, Heisler's Sports Palace, and Le Cue in Houston. I'd love to have experienced all. Now of course all the big action has moved to Buffalo's in N.O.

the first one in Baton Rouge was in February and the other one ended around halloween night. It cost $1200 to enter and last place was $1000. The Boat wanted to make sure everybody showed up with money.

Flyboy was betting real heavy at Lambert's RBD's, so it was natural to have a tournament down there. I roomed With Tommy DiLorenzo and we took Ronny Allen to the casino from the airport. As we pulled into the casino parking lot Tommy asked "I wonder if they are gambling down here?". Just then Ronny saw the sign he said " 200X craps odds I guess they gamble.

Marco played great that tournament, unfortunately the finals stated at like one in the morning Sunday night. The first game all the balls went int a wedge uptable and Budding wasn't going to take any chances. It wasn't long before everybody left.

It was a great tournament with I think 77 players. Everybody was there. I still have the tournament chart. I also wrote an article about the tournament and gambling at RBD's for the Arizona Billiard News. What a good time.

I took pictures of almost everybody at that tournament, in fact, the picture in Freddies book, with him and Jimmy Reid and Bunny Rogoff, I,m pretty sure I took at that tournament.
What an awesome gathering.
I have never laughed so much in my life.
