There is good and bad things about having a Derby type Tourney at a casino, but the good way out way the bad in my opinion. I had a chance to talk with Greg S. of Diamond and for what he is trying to do for pool if we give him enough time and some participating support there will be a year round pool tour where all us pool loving donkeys can play against and rub elbows with the best pool players in the world.. I think after they iron out all the kinks, and listen and apply all the player input that they can, it will be as good as the Derbys at the old hotel. I did better in Tunica than I did at my only trip to the Derby in 07',both gambling and in tourney mostly because I'm older, but mainly because of some help from my friends in my local pool community, Onepocket.org's Col. Billie Miller for letting me play at his house on his Diamond, Bobby Jones(local cue maker and friend) for getting my cue ready, David W. for trying to help me get pumped up,and Stanton Fountain and his wife for sweating all my matches. ALSO, Brandon Shuff(W), Robb Seaz(W), Buddy Hall(W), Ryan Stone(L), Corey Deuel(L), all these CHAMPIONS weather I beat them or they beat me, showed me the utmost respect even when they know I need 12/4 for the cash.

Hey, bro-- You finished in some tall cotton along side Scott Frost and Shane Van Boening!! I watched some of your matches, and I was very impressed with your wins against some very tough customers like Brandon Shuff, Rob Saez, and Buddy Hall!

1HoleNut was something of a protege of Mike Surber's. They played for hours at a time, and Mike taught him a lot. When Mike was murdered, 1HN came close to quitting the game out of grief. I'm glad he kept playing, and he has improved every year since. He's a family man, and puts in a long work week. So his level of play is even more impressive.

But the best thing is, NOW I'm going to be able to get more weight!:D

1st match(Brandon Shuff)

1st match(Brandon Shuff)

I will try to recall my matchs one at a time the best way i can. I have been following Brandon's career for about 2 years, since he came down to New Iberria La. he is a great player, and very underrated by people in the south, as for he is from Virginia. We got to talk for a minute before our match and come to find out before he became a top tier player he spared with the guy that help me become a top donkey, the late great man Mike Surber. Mike was from the same area and when he would go visit family he would go play a little pool, apparently they match up more than once, which Brandon tells me he learned alot from Mike in those matches. I was happy to hear him talk about Mike it really helped me calm my 1st match butterflies. I miss him and it make me smile inside when someone talks, or ask about him, as he is missed by more people than i will never know. On to the match the first 4 games are somewhat of a blurr, i do know we were tied up at 2 though, going into it i told myself to be aggressive just like Mike use to tell me about when he played Cliff in 06' for 3rd at the Derby"I felt like I had to beat him(Cliff) to the shot because I'm not going to out move him(Cliff)". I used that mostly, but i do want to say that I did move WITH Brandon, not better but WITH if u know what mean. He had me dead to rights and could not get that last ball, in that last game no exaggeration he had 12 or more shot cross corner for the win he just could not zone in on the hole, and I made the winner shortly after that. He did say that he got a new cue by Lomax I think when he got to Tunica. He did win the bank ring game with the same cue, but as we all know one pocket banks are WAY different than bank pool banks. I did not play better than him but i never gave up and was able to take advantage of his little misfortunes, I am a fan of his game, but more a fan of his character of being a true gentleman and CHAMPION.

Welcome to the site... now we need to get ready for the next one... I think you underate your level of play... but it was great to sweat the match's and watch you put champions in the same traps you put me in at my house... Hell and like Doc said, now I need more weight... because I finally realize I don't know anything about this game...

B

P.S. I am back to fundamentals... which is what John B. and Hillbilly both told me I needed to work on... and of course to stop shooting the circus shots...

2nd match(Robb Seaz)

2nd match(Robb Seaz)

First i want to say that when I saw that I had to play Brandon I was thinking I need to find out where the buy back window was. I had not totally given up, but for sure was not expecting the win, so when I saw I had Robb next I realized the hill was just starting, and I better get to climbing. I had seen Robb all over the Magazines, Internet, etc. winning what seem to be ever tourney he entered a few years back, then he kinda faded away for a while then when I went to a few regional tourneys around La., Ms., Al., last year he was there and winning again. Main one being Mobile which is coming up again on the 9th of Aug. 2012, he did not win it last year but I watched him play a 10 a head set against Danny Smith where he was down 9 and came back to win. I'm a fan of his will to win, and I knew I had a very slim chance to beat him. BUT I did win hill/hill last ball THE ONLY WAY I KNOW HOW. He had me 2 to 1 and there was one ball left on the table after some basic one ball moving, and a scratch by both of us then we get are balls back, we both need one and I mess up bad and leave what I though was a hanger for him(in my mind I was unscrewing), he was almost on the head rail with the cue ball, and the 7 ball was 3 inchs off the side rail and less than a diamond from his hole, he was shooting across the table, but he was almost straight in, he decides to slow roll it(the nervous donkey would have jacked up a little bit and poped it). This is the funny part of the story, just like Brandon, Robb had just got a new cue at the tourney from none other than "Lomax" himself, well he missed it bad and left me a easy bank shot where they are 98% to make, and I'm 50%, but 85% to hang real close, I did the 85%. He could not recover from that and a couple of shots later I get the ball. I break the last game and it was fair and get a ball count lead, but he comes back and here we are again one ball left, we move abit then he leaves me this shot that was tough, but for some weird reason as I was getting down on the ball I mum-bulled to myself "I'm going to make this". Donkeys mum-bull. The cue ball and 5 ball were straight in to his hole both being about 1 inch off the rail, cue ball between 1st and 2nd diamond, the 5 being between the side pocket and the 4th diamond, now most of the time I would slow spin it with top right towards my hole making sure I get the cue ball around and out the way, and I'm not joking when I say this but I am ALWAYS banking TOWARD my hole. As I do all the time I changed my mind in mid stroke, that and being abit nervous I hit it pretty stiff, luckily it went in because I did hit it hard enough to leave him straight in if I missed. Robb was understandably a little bit mad, he even said something like never in a million years! He started telling me about his new cue situation which was so oddly familiar to me from my last match I almost went to find Mr. Lomax and thank him personally. He shook my hand like a true gentleman and CHAMPION, and I seen him a couple of times later in the week and he was cool to me, once showing me he switched back to his old cue, and another time joking with me acting like he didn't no part of me. I know where I'm at on the food chain, and that made me fill good. Stay tuned more matches to come!

1 HN, you're killing me with modesty, I assume that's a little of Surber in you, I could be wrong. Anyways, that's a formidable string of opponents you played in the one pocket, pretty impressive to say the least, especially from a guy that needs 12 to 4:heh I'm curious, have we ever met? I probably saw you in the gambling room, if so I would like to know who you played I may recall the match.:) Just like to know what you look like, I have to be able to identify all the players that can give me 9/7:D Anyway's great playing, and a very good report of your action.

These are good descriptive posts that we all enjoy. It's good to see what your thinking is and what your tactics are in re to one pocket. When you have a long post you can break it up if you want to by pressing the wide enter button and it will create a space in the post so that it looks like this

when I touch that button and it makes your post so much easier to read, but that is totally up to you. It's just an idea that most all message board users love to use but I think you should become a verified member right away if you keep posting these match reports. They are great..

Also I love that sig line "In There Like Swimwear" It reminds me of a you tube entry I was enjoying a few months ago. Watch how a change of swimsuits really makes these girls look so much better. Hey have you ever played Rob Melrose?? AKA 'The One Pocket Hacker?? Was that joker in Tunica??

Day 2, 3rd and 4th matches

Day 2, 3rd and 4th matches

Thanks Jimmy B. I will try your tip on this post.

Well Dr. Bill(wincardona) you have seen me before and in Tunica, as I have watched you gamble in Mobile, I was the short chubby guy that got hustled Thurs. night in the gambling room by what I thought was a backer, I was giving him 11/7(donkey move) for $100 a game mainly to pick up a couple of bucks while showing him I play hard just in case he might want to help me in the future. I lost 3 games and quit. Then scooter started barking at me so I barked back, you was sitting in the middle with Ronnie I think. With my money situation(in the negatives) I ALWAYS need help, I love to play one pocket, and I play hard for the money, but I'm to nice to do what I have to do to get in them big money spots. I match up to tight(60/40 the worst of it) for me to get anyone to put up 2/1. It was the last night there for me and I really wanted to do something, I was up $1700 gambling and tourney money so it did not hurt to bad, + $750 for all week in Tunica is way better than this donkey could have ever imagined.

My 3rd match was a guy from Missouri I think John something could not pronounce his last name, he is an older gentleman, nice guy but he could never get anything going, and I was never in any trouble in the match. I win that one 3-0 pretty quick. After this match is when I started thinking that I could actually place in the money, because in 07' at the Derby it was the same way 26th place got me $500, that was my goal after this match, with the field being about half in Tunica I thought I was getting close.

My 4th match was my favorite of the tourney hands down not because I won but because I played Mr. Buddy Hall the man, thats it, the best in my book nothing else to say. I know he is on his fair well tour but I'm going to tell u he put me in spots differently than any other great players I've played besides Cliff J. His cart and being really slow to get around is very deceiving because he has forgot more moves over the years, than I will ever know. I played him one other time in 05' at Grady's event In Gulfport, he won 3-0 but it was a little tighter than the score showed. I had just started playing one pocket back then, and in the 1st game I scratch on the break, after a little moving he left me a window and I started running like a 9 baller, I run 8 and don't play shape on the scratch ball(forgot about it), that was it for me he gets that game one ball at a time, I was done he wins the next 2 easy. BUT THATS WHY I'M HERE, I HAVE LOVED ONE POCKET SINCE! Tunica was are long awaited rematch, I played good but took him to lightly and he gets the 2/1 game advantage. I stayed focused, and he missed a few balls in the end of a long match and I was able to win the match. I know I did not beat THE BUDDY HALL, but i did beat Buddy Hall.

mark coats who is our local pro/shortstop in vero beach fl
grew up in oklahoma and has told me stories about buddy and him and buddy
when i introduced myself to buddy and mentioned marks name you should have seen his eyes light up
"blast from the past"
although the matches i watched of of buddy showed time hasnt treated him well it still was an honor to meet him
during one match he commented to a freind who was watching
after missing a ball
" i couldnt hit the ass of a cow with a hand full of gravel".....:D

Good Job

I match up to tight(60/40 the worst of it) for me to get anyone to put up 2/1.

I've not been staked much, but have gambled a lot.
Remember they're only laying 2/1 the first game, or set
Rod.
P.S. Think about it. :)

Jason, I don't recall watching you when you were playing on Thursday night, as far as you gambling with people/players/backers to show your speed to be staked in future matches goes:sorry I wouldn't put too much faith in getting a square shake. Matching up with pool players (hustlers) is a tough proposition.....if you know what I mean... You seem to be able to play pretty good based off of your report, but you need to slow your eagerness to play down a bit and start matching up better:sorry 50-50 is good for starters.:D Good luck.

Dr. Bill
