I heard the event was still on. I’ve had my roomed booked for a month but due to work schedule I’m probably going to have to cancel. Might be for the best I suppose but I sure was planning on going.

The November 2020 edition of the Billiards Digest magazine has an article in refence to whether the Derby City Classic will be held in 2021. The article is a questions and answers interview with Chad Scharlow who is the vice-president of Diamond Billiard Products who produces the Derby City Classic event. Chad Scharlow stated that if the Indiana Health Commission, Caesar's Indiana (casino), and we (Diamond Billiards Products) get the players to come, then we want to host the event. Unfortunately, in a nutshell (sometimes called my head), and based on the totality of Chad Scharlow's comments plus the recent upwards spike in Covid 19 cases throughout the USA, I believe the "Derby ain't happenin' in 2021." 😢

Clearly, not holding the event, given present day circumstances, has got to be the right move.

I haven't gone to the Derby in several years because every time I attended, I picked up a bug. The dates are right in the middle of flu season. But that's my choice.

OTOH I don't believe legally it's the governor of Indiana's call, if their constitution is like most others in the U.S. Decisions like that must be made by a state's legislature. Yet everyone blithely accepts and cowers. People and businesses ought to be left to make their own decisions.

I don't blame the DCC for cancelling, but they ought not be forced to, unless the casino itself decided to close.

While I understand your thinking, the State has the right under numerous statues to enforce laws for the public good. THE PUBLIC GOOD Because Pandemics are rate events, it is hard to write a Constitution to apply to every instance that may arrive during the States existence. Since I am not a health expert or a scientist, I will at times have to consider the advice of such people. It is easy to say each person or business should be able to make their own decisions does not take into consideration that business' are licensed by the City, State and they are bound by their rules.People as we know, care not when they infect others with a deadly disease because of numerous reasons. FWEEDOM I have not gone for a few years because it is too crowded and the food sucks.

I believe most states have state of emergencies that allow extended power for the governor. Most of the court cases that have gone against the governors have been on extending the state of emergencies not on there rights to use special powers in the first place.

Also to hold an international tournament right now I think would be a mistake not only because the event would be no where near as good as it should be but also just mixing so many people who are going to bring disease back to so many people is very dangerous .

The State of Indiana legislature may have that power. But I'll bet a dollar to a dime that the governor does not have the authority to unilaterally shut down commerce in his state. Same as the U.S. President: no authority in that regard, although Congress would have that authority.

A quarter of a million dead in this country.

Hospitals/ICU's at max and first reponders working to the point of exhaustion. IMO, that qualifies as an "emergency" which gives state authorities exceptional powers to respond in the interests of the health and well being of their citizens. It is certainly not "business as usual" and much of the previous was brought on by allowing people to "make their own decisions."

What is so hard about that to understand?

oh, and your citation, from Bulgaria no less, lol, is ca-ca: https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/zero-hedge/

I shutter to my bones to say this but I agree with Lou. Hospitals are overrun, quarter of a million dead. I will listen to my wife who works as a manager for the 85 bed unit of our local hospital. She says it is real. Like it was said on Seinfeld one time, there are real and they are spectacular. Doc, there are certain aspects to some pool shots that don’t change no matter what your feelings about them may be. It is the same thing with this pandemic. Don’t be part of the group looking for conspiracy theories, you are WAY TO SMART for it. Your progressive friend, Kentucky.

A nurse in Texas says some of her patients who are about to die of Covid still believe Covid is a hoax and even deny it on their death beds.

Believe me, here in Texas, 99.97% of us believe it is real. The cure cannot be worse than the disease, though.

My brother is currently in Texarkana hospital with Covid. His wife also has it, but is not serious enough to be hospitalized. She

lost her sense of smell and taste completely. Today is his 6th day confined, but it is also his 5th and final treatment of a

2 hr intravenous treatment of Remdesivir. He has COPD from smoking 1 1/2 - 2 packs of cigarettes until about 4 or 5 yrs ago,

on Oxygen part-time, and 3 breathing treatments daily. This was the last 2 years. COPD is no joke. He does have a strong heart.

Anyways, he feels good and is expected to be released this afternoon or tomorrow morning. He is 65.

He was hospitalized for 2 days week before and was sent home on Friday. Readmitted this past Monday.
