When I first started playing the game I would do this and make the ball or lay it in my hole quite often. As I got hooked up with the better players they would tell me it is a sell out shot and not to shoot it.I dont shoot it very much at all unless the ball is close to my hole and I am cautious of speed.I would like to know peoples opinions on back kicking at the balls and when is it right and wrong to do,thanks. :)

Back kicking

I think for most people it's a sellout shot, although I have seen a couple of guys who were pretty good at it. If it's frozen on the rail I'm not likely to try it, but if it's off a bit, and I can make a two-rail kick, it's much safer. Only a lag, usually, but much safer that way.

Lenny, courtesy of your video :) I noticed San Jose Dick played this great shot during his match with Ron. I have only approximated the bulk of the balls, but I believe I am representing the shot decently well. Now this is a smart kick. Just kicking straight on in an open table situation more often than not leaves a return bank whenever you miss your pocket. Dick intentionally kicked to a little cut so the cue slid up behind the stack -- the rascal!

I know the exact shot, when I posted this I watched this match this morning and saw that shot and I was suprised he shot it but believe as he played it that it is a great shot so the people who say it is a bad shot might be wrong depending on the situation. :)

Stupid Kicks

We all look like champions when these go but like retards when they don't and we sell out.

Very true Deeman. Also, as Vapros stated, if the ball is frozen, it is a very risky shot. If the OB is 1/4 or 1/8" off the rail, it is very playable and the cue ball has no where to go but up into the stack. DO NOT TRY THIS SHOT AT HOME. ;)

If you KNOW how to shoot it, it's the right shot. If you don't you better pass. For a good player kicking at a ball within one diamond of his hole and within a quarter inch of the rail is nearly a hanger. :)

This kind of kick is the good kind of kick that Jay is talking about -- still softly rolled because you sure don't want to take a chance on rattling the ball out of the jaws. You want it in the pocket or hanging...

On the other hand, this kind of kick, while it looks easy to make, is also very easy to miss and you nearly always sell out a juicy bank if you miss. Nice "sucker shots" lol :)

Two-railer

Two-railer

Steve, that's the two-rail kick. Easier to get the pocket speed right, and to move the CB away from the rail. ;)

You could shoot your kick safety, but I was thinking more about this slightly more agressive kick:

I would shoot of the nine ball bahind thr five. I would shoot the shoot with control and lock the coe ball up . Theother shot is ok but I want to shoot a shoot were I have totale control. I let all those heros shoot the glory shoots. I will take the sure thing. And if I but him by the 5 ball he cant do anything. And its a easy shoot. I dont need to gamble.

If the ball is froze it is a very poor shoot.

This kick shot if the ball is of the rail you are a ten to one favorite to make it.

Her is a good bet you can give to a player lay him two too one and he shoots it froze and you shoot it off the rail and if you both make it keep shooting it till someone misses it. And if you move the shot fut=rther away the bigger edge you will have.
