I would like Michael "Geese" Gerace to be considered for the One-Pocket Hall of Fame in the future. I realize the nominations have already been made for this year, 2009.

Geese was a well-known one-pocket player from Maryland. He was mostly a road player, though he did come in third place for the Johnston City Tournament.

He passed away several years ago, but Geese lived and breathed pool. It was his entire life. I would love to see his name considered someday. :)

I post this as a reminder for next year. I'm late to the party, as usual, for 2009. :p

Name alone is grounds for the Bank HOF, but he has been playing top banks for years.

Brumback and Nicky Varner both play great, but I must express my reservations. John Brumback is a great tournament player and a terrific guy, as is Nicky, The Little Gorilla, as Hubert Cokes used to call him, but IMO both guys have a low profile when it comes to going around the country playing the best bankers for cash. Buddy Hall played way more big money banks then Nicky or John. They are both HOF material, but we are talking about this year, and I lean to the Piglet, Glen Rogers.

Beard

In the Dead Zone, I like Kenny Romberg Remus, and only from what I heard from Eddie Taylor and others, Bob Bowles. Romberg was a big bettor, once beating my pal, Weanie Beanie out of 200k in Detroit, and Bowles was not, he was only a five a game player. But for that fiver he would give Eddie Taylor fits.

Freddy,
I voted for Brumback and Varner based largely on their accomplishments in winning the banks division at DCC. I hovered over Piggy Banks's slot for a while but then passed on him because of his lack of wins at the DCC.

I almost voted for him based on the fact that he's a thoroughbred banker, aka, bank specialist. But his lack of major banks tournament wins influenced me some. Brumback was an easy 1st pick for me. Finishes high at the DCC every year. Varner edged out Rogers with his win. My next two picks would have been Price and Rogers.

Based on your post about Rogers going around the country playing $ games, I feel I didn't give that aspect of Piggy's resume enough credit. I never heard all that much of his road play, but since you said it, I know it's the GosPool truth! Upon learning that, I would have included him with Brumback & Nick. Really all 4 of these guys could get in and I would be happy.

I've decided not to vote in the banks HOF ballot. The reason being that I'm really not that familiar with some of the candidates. In my view the 1P HOF is already a little too much of a popularity contest. Of course I don't know how else it could be done. Even a panel of wizened experts would be prone to vote for, or against, someone simply because of personal prejudices, as many of us are inclined to do.

I fell in love with bank pool at last year's DCC. I was blown away by John Brumback's play. Prior to that time I had no desire to play banks, or even to watch a bank pool match. I feel much differently now, but I don't feel qualified enough by experience to vote.

Can anyone report on a top player Nicky beat playing even up bank pool for money? Please, it would make me feel better.

hi

I think the bank pool Hall of Fame candidates are all deserving , but as I have noticed Kenny Romberg will be an also ran again and that is ashame because he was nearly approaching Bugs status at his untimely death and that alone makes him qualified , maybe a ball under Bugs . I guess he isn't as well known other players like Nick Varner and although Nick is an all round great player you could bet parts of your body on Romberg if they would have ever matched up and that goes for many many other candidates already in the Hall of Fame .

Its just ashame members don't really know how talented he was !

Freddy,
No, I don't know of Varner beating a top player even up for money. But, two things here.

1. Doesn't mean it never happened.
2. Just say for a moment that he never did.....does that really disqualify him for induction into the Banks H.O.F.?

Here's my thinking on this. There are several noteworthy and well deserving players in the One Pocket H.O.F. and the Banks H.O.F. who never won a major tournament in those disciplines in which they were inducted. However, they were not penalized that they had ZERO major tournament wins, they still were given consideration.

Reversing things a bit, Nick has won the DCC banks championship, no easy task. He is a reknown banker not just for that win, but also for all the banks he routinely makes in other pool disciplines as well. I can't count the number of times I've heard people mention that Varner "is from Kentucky, that's why he banks so good." The geographical location means little. The fact is that he is an elite banker.

If he's not good enough for the Banks H.O.F., then how did he beat so many of the big bank guns in the DCC contests over the years? By accident?

Plus, how come so many people on this site cast votes for his inclusion? What do we see that is so misleading about him?

To sum up my argument, why is it fair to include men who never won a major tournament in banks but not include a man who did?

The defense rests. Comfortably. :)

Lets review:
the criteria in place for the Legends of Bank Pool.

1. Great Players who have demonstrated their excellence in tournament competition over time.
2. After Hours Legends who have demonstrated their excellence and their heart by matching up against the best of their time.
3. Teachers and Promoters of the game who have had a lasting impact on the growth and popularity of the game.

Now if we are going to lean on Nicky's 1 win at DCC, then why shouldnt Larry Price get in ahead of him since he won at DCC twice?

I will ask one more question. Keep in mind I never ask a question that I dont already have the answer to. Nick is in the BCA HOF and deservedly so. Nick is in the Onepocket HOF and deservedly so. Nick was one of the all time great 9ball players, even beating Efren in a long match in the Philipines. Since I have known and played him ever since he was the Intercollegiate Champion, how many times do you think he and I have played bank pool?

Freddy,
To be very fair here.....that was a good comeback! It was loaded with the full dose of Beardisms...humor "funeral parlor", good reasoning (the Larry Price zinger was an exceptionally good comeback, one which I thought you would pass over, but your brain ain't wired to pass over good hard useful facts like that, especially when they can be used as effectively as you just did). And lastly, the "Keep in mind I never ask a question that I dont already have the answer to" is something that I am also aware of.

So, I come out swinging, confidently of course, and you BAM! BOOM! and I'm temorarily staggered back on my heels. But wait, I ain't done yet either. I got another shot for you as well.....

Didn't one of my favorite pool characters, a Mr Hubert "Daddy Warbucks" Cokes, take Nick on the road with him? Didn't he wind up the "Little Gorilla" and turn him loose on unsuspecting players? IF Nick was a nit in money matches, would HC really have kept him under his wing for as long as he did?

So, honorable Beard, are you saying that Nick has no gamble in him? Or that all he ever gambled on was 14.1 or 9 ball? That, being from a bank region in our country, he never matched up with them other Kentucky and Ohio boys for cash?

There's a reason why he's in so many H.O.F.'s.....he deserves to be there with the other giants of our great sport.

Even an impartial judge like me knows you're glassy eyed and seeing little birdies circling around now. :)

You dizzy yet!? :D

You have read one too many of SJD's unreasonable replies to my posts. Now you are employing his "avoid the issue at hand, and blame one for what one never said," tactics. Where did I say Nick was a nit? Where did I say he had no gamble? Where did I say he only gambled on 14.1 or 9 ball? Didnt I say he belonged in the ONEPOCKET HOF?

Next, Hubert Cokes was in his 70s at that time and his "road" days were over. No road trips. He took Nick under his wing in their home town of Evansville, IN. Their playing took place at the Elks Club in Evansville and then Johnston City. He tutured him at home.

Finally, with that "must have played the KY and OH boys," and, "must have done something," is the same kind of logic and criteria that won Obama the Nobel Peace Prize.

Lets not forget that other bank pool region, Chicago, IL. He spent a couple of months in my joint, North Shore Billiards. I will ask another question that I already know the answer to, while he was gambling every day in there, how many bank pool games did he play in North
Shore in 2 months? Here was the bank lineup awaiting him there. Me, Bugs, Kenny Romberg, Howard The Coward Meechum, Piggy Banks, Tough Tony Brewer, and Johnny Boy Skinner. Now that's some bank pool HOF material.

Beard

This election might cause hard feelings between me and Nicky, and I certainly dont want that, but I am campaigning for Piggy Banks and Kenny Romberg and I can only give my experienced opinion.

Fred,
I was laying across my bed watching this thread on the laptop that you were kind enough to contribute to (and many sincere thanks!) and I kept hitting the refresh buttom every few minutes. Once I seen that green light come on at the end of your name, I started wringing my hands and tried to sit up. Real bad day for the back, had to keep prone.

Where to begin.... I read most of the threads here every day without always contributing. So yea, I'm familiar with SJD. He's someone I consider a friend. Before he really knew me at all, he did a gigundic favor for me several years ago that I'm still very appreciative of. He lent me something of very high value to look at for a while. He trusted me and I respect him a lot for that. But to be totally honest, I never copy anyone when I post something. Especially something that I don't understand...."Now you are employing his "avoid the issue at hand, and blame one for what one never said," tactics." ??? Maybe they were dumb questions but I sure wasn't avoiding the issue at hand. I came at you with the best arguments I had. Every now and again, I like mixing it up with you. It "battle hardens" me every time!

You are right about everything in paragraph one. You never said any of that, per say or otherwise. I did think the implication was there though. And I never said that you said he wasn't One Pocket H.O.F. material. Even though I don't quite understand exactly what style of "employing the avoid issue" is or means, I think you may have just done the same with the 1P shot I just mentioned. I think.

Here's where the tide really turned against me in our correspondence.....The "under his wing at the Elks Club", and in "Evansville, Indiana" were vintage Beard! You do have a gift and a flair for making good points with humor. Again, I don't know what to say....

Alright, here's my last bastion of hope to salvage my argument about Nick. You mentioned Chicago and the murder's row of bankers that Nick didn't play while he was there. Ok, here goes...did any of you guys bet with him at 14.1? Or 9 ball with or without weight? I know it's a weak argument, but I'm already on a respirator here it's all I got left. Here it is....maybe Nick didn't want to play you fellas banks just the same as you guys didn't want to tangle with him in 14.1? Pfffft!.....Up in smoke, I know. Don't even say it...WEAK!

By this point, I'm basically sunk. But, I want to go down swinging. The only thing I take strong issue to is any reference to or with Obama. I never voted for him and never would, even at gunpoint. I'm a card carrying Republican who loves his guns. Obama hates republicans and guns almost the same. That, Sir, was the lowest of blows! I've been besmirched!

Well Beard, your underling has to admit that up to and including now, I still can't remember you losing a spirited debate. I don't know how you do it. I still feel good about voting for Nick (and Brumback). I'm just not so sure that my reasoning was as valid as I first thought. Wait, yes it is. No, maybe I could have said it better. But...the ELK'S Club???? I yigh yigh!

Next to last...I don't think this will hurt you and Nick's relationship at all. Both you guys know that we all have our own opinion of things and this is just a good, old fashioned a$$ beatin', er, uh, I mean debate! :D

And lastly, in honor of our friendship and in appreciation for engaging me in this spirited a$$ whooping, er, uh debate, I have a song I would like to dedicate to you. Just change the word "law" and replace it with "Beard". It's a catchy tune!

I humbly accept your concession. Now I'll answer your other, off the point, non related to bank pool, question. The time Nicky spent in North Shore, a month or so, while he didnt play bank pool, he played everything else and won a bushel of money. He beat everybody he played, including Artie. Artie quit playing him and began steering him, taking 30% of his action. Bugs tried to give him 8-7 1pkt and couldnt do it. (Didnt beat me of course. We played 1pkt for $200 a game and broke even. I left him alone after that.) Even his father won money playing bumper pool. He left No Shore and went to the Commodore Hotel in NY and won the worlds straight pool title. I'm sure his battles at No Shore whipped him into shape.
He returned to No Shore after NY, but had no more good games after winning a worlds championship. He was left with Artie, who now turned on him and proceeded to pound on him for about a week.

Keep in mind, Terry, many of the stories that refer to what happened in the "old days" were often started by me! ie., Cokes, Nicky and the Little Gorilla, etc. You're arguing with the original reference point.

I know I am Freddy, and it was a lot of fun, as usual. I knew plenty about Varner & Cokes way before before we ever had contact, but I also freely admit and do appreciate all the "fine tuning" of their stories you've added to these and other great players and character's in pooldom over the years.

As for the vote, I can't re-vote and I don't have a ghost account, so for this year, it was Varner and Brumback for me in the banks.

If Piggy Banks doesn't make it this year, he may have my vote next year. All I know of him was what I've seen and heard on Accu-Stats, as well as from some posts on pool forums. Admittedly, I don't have a speck of info on his gambling prowness or habits. That's something you'll have to fill us in on sometime. But from looking at the voting, Glenn Rogers looks to have a great shot of being enshrined this year.

I had a lot of fun sparing with you over this. You use an advanced form of logic and / or reasoning in which you somehow turn the table ever so slightly in an attempt to cause doubt in one's thinking. How you do it, I can't pin done just yet. I'll have to re-read all this for another dozen times or so to try and get a grasp of just how your style is employed. :)

The only part I DIDN'T enjoy was the Obama reference! That was like giving me a mickey in my diet coke! That "jarred" me, ala like Cornbread did to RA.

I'll try hard again another time sometime down the road Mr. Freddy. Until then, I tip my hat at you, as I walk backwards out of your lair! :D

If you read closely you will see that the Obama reference wasnt really pointed at you, but at the Neo-Lib world. Neo meaning that years ago, in my hippy days, I could tolerate them, especially if they allowed me to seduce them.

Fred,
I'm familiar with SJD. He's someone I consider a friend. Before he really knew me at all, he did a gigundic favor for me several years ago that I'm still very appreciative of. He lent me something of very high value to look at for a while. He trusted me and I respect him a lot for that.

Terry,

That original 8mm print of "Deep Throat" has been shipped to 47 of 48 of the lower states. He still refuses to send it to Illinois though, I don't know why. It has more miles on it than the space shuttle. I think he's about to retire it though, I mean, who has a movie projector anymore? Maybe he'll have it converted to VHS. We can only hope:) .

Linda Lovelace for president!!!!

Beard,
I quoted the whole post but I really only needed to re-read this one line here....".....Nicky or John. They are both HOF material, but we are talking about this year, and I lean to the Piglet, Glen Rogers."

If you had to rank all of this year's candidates, what order of enshrinement would you put them in? Not to debate anymore! I'm just curious as to how you see the line up. I'm not going to comment if you post them, I just want to see how you see them.

Then this was from your last thread...."If you read closely you will see that the Obama reference wasnt really pointed at you, but at the Neo-Lib world. Neo meaning that years ago, in my hippy days, I could tolerate them, especially if they allowed me to seduce them."

I don't get or understand what that means, but I knew the Obama zinger was not really directed to me. But even if it was, I have real thick Rhino-like skin. I don't get my feelings hurt that easily. I would feel worse if you or Grady or Billy, or SJD or some other great player didn't think I had respect for what you guys have accomplished as well as for how readily and easily you guys are willing to share stories and exploits with us. That plus the fact that you've always been so nice to me over the years. You would have a very hard time making me not like you!

I regret I never got to hang out with you in a poolroom. It would have been so much fun.:D
