the first joss i bought in the 1970"s was 57 inches

when i bought a secong one in the 1990's it was 58 inches

my thoughts on cue length are once its at a length long enough to accomodate your bridgelength (distance from bridgehand to cue ball )and allow your grip hand to be perpendicular to the floor
the rest has to do with weight and balance and personal preference
