I've played three times in the last week and that's the most I've played in one week for about five years. Got to hittin' 'em real good too, almost felt in stroke but still shot the occasional ball into a rail. This situation came up about an hour ago and I had to stop and think about it. I had pocket 'A' and needed all three. The 10 ball is so deep in the hole that it's ready to fall in. I figured that if I shot the 9 into it and they both fell, I wouldn't have a shot. I thought that the 5 might be a better shot even though it's a tougher shot. What would you do?

With my ability, I would have to shoot the 9. I would play the speed and aim for the inside of the 10. I would then hope to have a good shot off the 9 to get on the 5. I wouldn't trust my bank on the 5, even though the pocket is big. I know I got 1 and probably 2 for sure. Worse case scenerio, if I made both, he has no shot on the 5.

RBL-WW (worry wart)

How can you not get shape on the 9 railfirst off the 10...then if you don't get the angle (on the 9) for straight in shape on the 5, you can always get bank shape.

IWNGUOOTEC to flail at the 5.

Red & Joe,

I never once considered banking the 5 ball. Cutting it into the 10 was my option. On a real table it was not as tough a shot as it looks on the WEI. A two-rail scratch in the side was a distinct possibility though.

Dennis , seems to me this would be a good option.--Smitty[CUETABLE]http://CueTable.com/P/?@4ADqK4BTyL4COsK4DLyK4EFoD4FRVL4GJNK3HLiK3IXsP3JbCk3KOcK4LGcL3MRNL3NIwK3OTyL2PIFs3QdXA3dXsP3dcIB3daUc3dWbo3dTYb2kIFs3kXkD3kcDL3kPrq@4ADqK4BTyL4COsK4DLyK4EFoD4FRVL4GJNK3HLiK3ITQK3JGcL3KOcK4LGcL3MRNL3NIwK3OTyL3PQIs3QdXA3dTQK3dcpv3ddOy3kQIs3kRtF3kPAo1kbek@4ADqK4BTyL4COsK4DLyK4EFoC4FRVL4GJNK3HLiK3IdWy3JGcL3KOcK4LGcL3MRNL3NIwK3OTyL1PbNk3QdXA4YFoC3YcQq3YcQq3ddWy3dcpv3ddOy1kbNk4kGtt4kFnG@[/CUETABLE]

or shoot the nine into the ten and come across for the five. you will have your cue ball on the correct side of the table to make either of the two remaining balls and get position.

the ten is deep in the jaws and it isnt a gimme to bring the cue ball around to where you want from there.

cutting or banking the five you can easily miss the ten and sell out.

if you cant get back to the five then maybe roll the nine down into the ten and leave it in the hole area. there isnt a sellout here.

It's good to see that somebody is learning from their WEI pamphlet(not in Arizona), nice job Smitty on the multi-page layout.

The problem with this shot is that the 10 was so deep in the hole that if I hit rail-first I might miss it. And if I hit ball-first, I might make them both. The same thing applied to SJD's rail-first with the cueball shot.

In the scenario described, I like shooting the 9 into the 10. Even if they both go, you should have a reasonable bank on the 5, and enough angle to kill the rock on the bottom rail to leave maximum distance. If the 9 does follow the 10, you should have a couple of different options of playing shape on the 5.

Beatle does not have a bad idea, as well

Did you win the game?

I really can't see any other shot other than the 9 into the 10 ball. The chances of making both the 9 and the 10 are too little to be concerned of that happening. Simply roll the 9 into the 10 ball and get paid off.

Senor,

You are probably right but I like keeping the balls in front of me in this situation. Yes, I did win the game but only because of a later error by my opponent. I guess I got lucky.
