I wrote/posted this on onepocket.org 4-5 years ago....most of you weren't on here back then and never saw/read it.....Matt's recent thread/question about why you do you love One Pocket made me remember it, and since it's related, I thought I'd post it up again....here it is >>>

" Here's what I've always thought is an interesting, never mentioned aspect of One Pocket playing mentality, that for me is a huge part of it's appeal in being the best and most interesting pool game, ( and I think this is probably also the case for most one pocket players )....and this 'One Pocket-pool-players-personality-trait' that I describe, is the opposite of a 9 ball players mindset....

In 9 ball, you never, ever, have any choice in which ball you shoot at - the lowest number ball that's on the table is what you HAVE to shoot at - you don't get any choice in the matter - for me, for that reason, 9 ball has always been way too dictated, restrictive, repetitive and thus, boring....it's the same-old, same-old, rack after rack.....I think of 9 ball as the pool game equivalent of working on the production line in a factory, or being a filing clerk, or at best, an accountant....

Whereas One Pocket appeals to the pool player-personality types who are intelligent free thinkers, who are adventurous, who are strategic thinkers, and who like to think for themselves and don't like being told what to do......One Pocket's work world equivalent might be, among other things, to be an artist, a scientist, an NFL offensive coordinator, a musician, or a world explorer......And when you play the ABSOLUTE BEST pool game in the universe >>> ONE POCKET <<< , you get to do whatever you want...rack your brain, use your imagination, shoot at any ball that you want, kick a ball 3 rails, carom two balls cross-corner, create a masterpiece, run out, or don't even hit a rail and scratch if you want to! - and in so doing all of this, One Pocket players are exercising that good old...*AMERICAN FREEDOM OF CHOICE*.

And so in closing, I guess we could say here on onepocket.org, that since there's so little freedom of choice in 9 ball....9 ball is, THE COMMUNIST POOL GAME !...........:D

An excellent post, OPG! I think you're correct that 1P appeals to those of us who are freedom-loving. Liberty comes in many forms. As you say, in 9-ball there is always only one shot, with a few variations. In one-hole there are many shots with many different variations in any given inning, which makes 1P exponentially more unconstrained. Maybe that's why 9-ballers don't ever want to try other games. They've got their assembly line routine down so well that they'd be lost without the discipline.

Perhaps they'll unionize. "Power to the 9-ballers!" "Assembly line workers unite!" "Lay down your pitchforks and pick up your break cues and jump cues!" "Yellow and white is mellow and right!" :D

Why am I thinking a debate over spot shots is about to erupt again?

No need to bring politics / social systems / nor philosophy into this. Psychology probably will do just fine. 9 ball and one-pocket are the two great pathological pool games. 9 ball appeals to sociopaths and one pocket to psychopaths. Schizophrenics like both.

The Texas analogy would be: 9 ballers are gunslingers, one-pocketeers are guerrilla fighters. The gunslingers always get the girl...if they live. The guerrilla fighters never do...regardless. ;)

Ghost, girls like games that make them wet. 9 ball is better than 1p for that to them. 8 ball is the best of them all, btw. Just a tip if you want to parlay your winnings into a better night's sleep. Skin

Skin.......Hate to say it, but if one were to meld together Papie's popgun-strength posts to me, with KindlyOldUncleDave's inscrutable posts....the result would be, very much like your recent replies to my posts........:)....

My line

My line

My original line, and it has been plaguerized by many pool players, was:

"If I was going into combat and was going to storm the beach, I would want to be with a 9ball player, but if I was going to operate like a guerilla behind the lines blowing up installations, I'd want to be with a One pocket player."

Yeah, that was pretty weak. That's why I deleted it last night, but apparently you were quoting while I was deleting. Anyway, the point was to expand the horizon on this comparison thing. In the very important context of who scores best with the gals, 8 ball players have 9 ballers beat, and compard to both of them 1p players are celibates.

Hey, I don't make the facts. I just report them.

I agree with Doc. You have to have read something first in order to plagiarize it. But I do like that fact that you pretty much agree with me. ;)

Actually, I forgot how to spell it and was too lazy to use spell check. I forget many things nowadays.

So are $500 dollar an hour one-pocket lessons. Anybody with that much money to waste can get a close game from a good player for $25 a game and play till he's 20 games stuck. He'll get more info than you'll give him, play for much longer than an hour, probably have fun doing it, and actually have a (small) chance of winning.

He will learn more in that one houer then he will learn playin 25 dollaers a game for the rest of his life. WE are talking about learning and learning what to do and Why you are doing it not just playing to win a few dollaers. LEarnig and playing are all togeather a sifferent story. And I put it up because I new nobody would take me up on it. And that proves that people just want to stay with thier old game and cofort zone. You cannot get what I will give him or her in a lession no were in the world. And if you think that the money means more then you improving your game by 20% or 30% then play your 25 dollaers a game and stay werte you are. It does not mean anything to me because I dont care if someone takes a lession or not. And By not taking a chance at a lession from the smardest one pocket player in the world. If you dont think its worth it then go and take a 50 or a 100 dollaer lession. How much is it worth for someone to improve your game by 20% or 30%. Do you know anybody that could improve a champions game by 10% to 20% ? You are getting something thats rair and no one else can give it to you. Because they dont know. If I was a player wanting to learn. I would take the lession If its on the square. ITs the greatest offer ever in life for pool. And I am not talking about you having fun and enjoymeant. I am talking about you learning and making you a smarter and better player. I dont see no one else doing that. Just giving lessions on things that most of the good players can tell you. I am talking about making you a great player. If you have the tools and ability. And I will give you the knowledge you need to take your game to that level. This ie about you and your game. You dont know because you dont have a clue what he will learn. And his whole attitude will change with his learning. BUt I am not going any farther wright know. And if nobody takes the lession its thier loss. And you have to make that decision yourself. And not listen to all these other people who are not qualified and dont know. And talk like the think they know. Your wright you just made me awaare that 500hundred dollaers is to cheap. So for the knocker and none belivers I am making it one thousand dollaers a houer. And if anyone thinks it is worth it and step up. And dont worry about what all the knocker and other people are saying then go ahead and take the lession. And you will be more then satisfied. But only you can make that happen. And belive me I will not loose no sleep over it. Because you are the one getting the good deal. And you will have the answers to becoming a great player. Or spend the next 20 years not knoweing what you can learn in a few days or you might never know. But if you waite to long I mite not do it for 5 thousand dollaers an houer. I have time know for a while but that time will run outtoo. And when its to late you might tell yourself I wish I would have taken that lession. Its about you not about all these other people and what they say. Because they dont know like everyone else that doesnt know. How much is 20% or 30% worth in money improving your game. Do the math and you will come up with the correct answer . Make it your answer not what someone else says or wants you to do or think.

I always liked knockers and blockers. And the waiste is not learning or going through your whole life not knoweing. I have learned one thing about knockers they are very insecure people and they are specialist at minding other peoples buissness. It must be because they are one ove those 25 dollaer players that never learned anything.

A perfect description of me, after all of these years. By the way Artie, SJD ain't the only one on this site who gambles. If you ever want to take a nice vacation to Michigan this winter, we can play some for $10,000 also. And I won't need any backers nor would I allow them. I back up everything I write or say with my own cash. I'll show you how I gamble for big money.

By the way Artie, when you advertise $500 per hour lessons on a public forum, it's not knocking when people comment on it.
