Please don't be true

Please don't be true

I'm in shock. If this turns out to be true, I'll tell what I know of Mike, which is rather interesting, I think.

It seems they are saying it has been confirmed. If so this is tragic as I can't think of Mike ever hurting anyone. A great loss.

Mike was kind of an understudy of Weenie Beenie's and had worked for Beenie at his Jack & Jill poolroom. It was also Beenie that steered Mike into a casino job, which eventually led him to Biloxi, as I understood it from Mike.

Couldn't be a nicer guy and more of gentleman as I knew him, and a darn good all around player too.

What a tragedy!

It's was Mike that got murdered. I called somebody I know in law enforcement in that area and he did some sniffing out for me. Told me it was Mike and he'll get me some details when he can....Sad...Sad news.

I am also shocked and very sad hearing this....Mike was a friend of mine...we sat in the stands at the DCC the last few years at the DCC talking One Pocket and discussing the One Pocket matches that we were watching....Then, unfortunately (for me), lol, I had to draw him in the 4th round of the DCC One Pocket last year....we smiled about drawing each other, and he then proceeded to knock me out of the tournament...but if I had to get knocked out of the tournament, then I would just as soon it was Mike that did it...

Mike was a GREAT guy, and a GREAT One Pocket player.

Jay just got some info on what went down and posted it over at az.b....here's what he found out >>>

I spoke with one of Mike's close friends earlier today. I wanted him to come on here and tell what he knows. I will tell you what he told me. Mike was playing at the pool room and this guy (and a friend) were sweating it. Mike was playing for money and flashed a bankroll. After he was finished playing these two guys struck up a conversation with Mike. They wanted to know all about the local casinos and Mike was an expert.

The one guy, who went by the name Jericho, went with Mike to his house so Mike could drop off his cues. Then they were going to go to a casino together. Mike was just being a good guy, helping them out. It seems that the moment Mike opened the back door to go in the guy whacked him in the back of the head, and robbed him. He then took Mike's car back to the poolroom and jumped in his truck (a black Ford F-250) with his buddy, and they high tailed it out of there.

They got a days head start before people realized something was wrong, with Mike's car still in the parking lot. They went to his house and saw him laying on the floor near the back door. Jericho is described as about 40 years old, 6' tall with a pony tail. He is clean cut with a little paunch on him.

Let's all help the police find this guy! He's out there somewhere, maybe in a casino or a poolroom. If I find out any more I'll let you all know. As far as I'm concerned this takes priority over everything else on here.

just watched Surber/Joyner at DDC 2007

just watched Surber/Joyner at DDC 2007

Last night I was watching a DVD of Mike Surber match at the Derby in 2007, and I saw the Ghost sitting in the front row. I was wondering where Surber learned to play, and why I had not run into him before anywhere in the US.

And now I read he has died! How terrible.

Who knew him? Where was he from?

It is with great sadness and great frustration that I report my knowledge of the events surrounding the murder of my friend "Biloxi Mike" Surber. The report by Jay of his contact’s story is only partially true. I've avoided even looking at the posts concerning this subject on AZbilliards. It would be unbearable to read all the hysteria, innuendo, fabrication and misinformation regarding this horrible event that is the hallmark of that site.

I came to Skeeter's Billiards at my usual time Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 10). Mike was playing friendly pass-time one-pocket with another friend of mine, Jerry, who works at the Beau Rivage with Mike. Mike and Jerry have been friends for years. I took the table next to theirs, and commenced to practice.

Shortly I noticed a stranger standing about 15 feet away, intently watching Mike and Jerry play. He just stood there sipping on a bottle of beer and watching. Presently he came up to the two men, and asked Mike if anyone liked to gamble. Mike said he did, and they walked up to the bar for a conversation. Mike then came back and resumed play with Jerry.

The stranger presently walked over again and told Mike that he had been watching him play, and that he couldn't beat Mike. Mike remarked that one-pocket was his best game, but that he also played 9-ball. At that point the guy started telling the two that he and partners had a recording studio in Atlanta, and that he was in the Gulfport/Biloxi area to scout locations for a new studio. From then on I paid only partial attention to what they were saying. Most of it I wasn’t interested in. Some of it I couldn't hear.

I didn't like the looks of the guy. He was rather swarthy looking, with dark hair pulled back into a pony-tail. He had on a medium blue long sleeved dress shirt, and dark slacks. He had a soft voice-- rather disarming and non-threatening, and had the allure of an experienced con. That package put up a red flag to me, and I didn't even want to meet the guy. However, I just figured him for a bullshitter.

I heard him tell Mike that he needed someone to show him around the casinos, and help him get the lay of the land. He asked Mike if he'd do it. Mike said, "You mean right now?" I recall thinking to myself that that was the wrong answer. Why would Mike even consider it?

Anyway, Mike agreed to help the guy out. Mike called another friend of his to tell him that he and this guy would be driving Mike's pickup over to the friend's house to pick up Mike's car (Mike had left it at the friend's when he had anticipated damage from tropical storm Ida), and then they would drop Mike's pickup back at Mike's house so that they could use his car for the "tour".

They left the poolroom at around 4 PM. Then Jerry moved over to my table to play pool with me. We both were surprised that Mike would take this guy at his word, and leave with him. We thought it was strange --that although Mike was a normally a wary guy, and usually very cautious and suspicious-- but this time he seemed to drop his natural guard. I think Mike had simply fallen for this guy’s line of crap.

They first stopped off at an attorney friend of Mike's, to see if the guy might need any legal assistance in setting himself up in Biloxi. The attorney was not in the office, so the guy left his business card (which turned out to be a stolen card), and they left. I talked with the secretary today. She said the guy creeped her out, and she couldn't figure what Mike was doing with that guy.

They next stopped by Mike’s friend’s house to get Mike’s car. The friend told me he didn’t bother to go out, but that he looked out the glass door and saw Mike start his car, and the guy following in Mike’s pickup.

Very little is known from that point until Thursday (yesterday) morning, when Mike’s car was noticed in the parking lot, parked in an area that was blocking some deliveries. The owner of Skeeter’s saw Mike’s car. He saw that the doors were unlocked, and the keys were in the ignition, so he simply moved it to another spot. Later Jerry came to the poolroom, having heard that Mike never showed up for work at the casino, which had never before happened. He and another guy opened up Mike’s car and saw Mike’s credit cards and license in a rubber band, with no money attached. The then knew that something was very wrong.

They drove over to Mike’s house, but couldn’t get any answer at the door. They came back to the poolroom and called the Ocean Springs police. The police said they couldn’t break in, but that they’d look the other way if his friends wanted to do so. A group of guys then back over to Mike’s. They kicked open a hole through some storm plywood in the back window, and looked in. Mike was laying face down in a pool of blood. They then called the police, who immediately cordoned off the scene, and wouldn’t let anyone in the house.

The consensus opinion of Mike’s friends is that he had been bludgeoned in the back of the head and left for dead. They believe that if he’d been shot, that close-by neighbors would have heard it. They suspect that the murderer then took Mike’s money, and possibly whatever else he could from the house; then drove Mike’s car back to the poolroom, and fled in the perpetrator’s own vehicle.

The police have naturally not commented on any aspect of the case. They and the family will have an autopsy done. I assume that they’ll call in someone from either Jackson or New Orleans. Until then, we have only conjecture to explain this sad and sickening set of circumstances.

We locals are in deep shock over this. One of the guys said he felt as though he was in a coma. I’ve never before had a close friend who was senselessly murdered. It's an awful feeling. I’m just hoping and praying along with everyone else here that they can somehow find the guy who did this.

This news absolutely disgusts me!!! I am literally sick to my stomach with the state of humanity and what this world is coming to....

I was at Skeeters last year where I spoke with Mike and played Mike at DCC last year. He has soul of an angel and the fight of the devil...he played hard and loved the action. I'm going to miss him although we had only met on two occasions. I wish the best for his family during these difficult times.

As for the rotten bastards who are responsible for this...I hope their ultimate demise is as long and painful as can be imagined. Short and sweet would not be justice.

RIP, Mike Surber....you will certainly be missed.

This is truly awful news.

I met Mike the same time I met you at the tournament in Gulfport, Ms that Doc put on in Octber, 08.

I played him twice and he was a great player who loved pool and was one of the nice guys in the pool world and you knew that about him right away.

Condolences to friends and family. Mike was special.

Yesterday's latest was that the police have officially ruled Mike's death a homicide. Hopefully we'll now be able to get some kind of picture of the murderer on the pool websites.

Perhaps at this level of violence, this is not the first time this animal has struck and maybe not the last if they don't catch them.

Doc, thanks for the infomation. Hopefully, the description will help someone recognise this person and he will get his just reward.

I spoke with Lt. Flowers of the Ocean Springs, Miss. police dept. today. They're still keeping the investigation status close to the vest, but it sounds like they have some good leads. Evidently the presumed suspect (my phrase) has left a paper trail in Jackson, Miss., and also Atlanta.

I gave the lieutenant a complete description of the presumed suspect, and was able to provide some possible other insights. He wants to meet with me, and also the other friend of Mike's who was present during the discussion between Mike and the presumed suspect. They are interviewing everyone who may have come into contact with the guy. If I can get any information from the police that I'm given permission to pass along, I certainly will.

The lieutenant was made aware of the potential vast audience available for posting pictures or other clues via the pool websites. I got the impression that he would like to take advantage of that when they're ready to release photos.

Fatboy phoned today and gave some helpful hints about what course to take if Mike's cues were stolen. But it has not been learned by most of us whether or not any cues were stolen.

Mike's funeral arrangements are posted in another thread.

RIP Mike Surber

RIP Mike Surber

Doc

So sorry for the loss of your good friend. Deepest sympathy to all Mike's friends and family.
Hope the billiard community can help in bringing the low life(s) who commited this senseless act, to their just reward.

I'm sure your next, or future tournaments... will be a fitting rememberance of Mike.

Remembrance article about Mike

Remembrance article about Mike

Folks:

Not sure if this was already posted, but methinks this is a fine remembrance article about Mike:

http://sunherald.com/local/story/1749361.html

Probably one of the finest close-up photos of Mike as well -- happy face with happy eyes. The best way to remember him!

P.S.: I'm not sure if it'd been mentioned, but what's the possibility of erecting a remembrance page for Mike over here at OnePocket.org?
