Does your backer have any right to keep the fact that he's backing you a secret? If you know the guy who's backing you really well, I can think of reasons you would want to keep that info under your hat. But if you don't know him well, and you lose, he might "forget" that he was backing you. And then you have problems :( Any rules of thumb from old time hustlers on how to handle situations where you don't know the backer that well? Thanks in advance.

Like Ringling bros does their tents, when they come to town.
"put'em up."
Rod.
P.S. Just tell your backer you're not sure about the guy you're playing and ya'll better put up. If either one doesn't want to put up, it's no good anyway.

That's great advice. Make it sound like it's the other guy you aren't sure about, when it's really both:) Thanks, androd.

Sometimes a backer will hand you the money for a set or two but does not want it to be known that he is backing you because he does not want any hard feelings with players and whatnot. It is like when people side bet in poolrooms and do not want players to know they are betting against them because they might be friends or on good terms.

You have to be careful. I remember twice a stranger came up to me and said to 'play a guy' . I said yea I am. After I win he comes up and says he was backing me and wants his end. I said drop dead. Do I really look that weak?/ They should give you the money or make it clear that they are the financier handling the money or whatever. Once I pulled a trick. I told a local shortstop to play a big black fellow cause he had bunch of money and he was flipping coins for $100 bills with the carnival gaff game owners. They started playing nine ball for $100 a game. Sure enough my guy dogs the four ball and about that time Burton asks me what I'm doing. I told him and he says that big black guy is a player named Lotto Papa and my man has no chance. I see he is straight in on the seven and the eight and nine are laying in the holes, so I just put my money in my shirt pocket and hit the door and jump in the car and leave. Me and Eddie thought it was funny but the others did not.. I have discontinued outlandish behavior like this and throwing the Red Card and chasing young girls and visiting porn sites and uh telling lies..

You're right Lenny, but the opponent doesn't care who's backing the player, all the opponent wants (or should want) to do is have the money put up.
