I am thinking that in order for a pool player to be inducted into the ONE-POCKET HOF, it may be a good idea that they are known for their one-pocket prowess and skills set.

Some players are multi-faceted kind of players, known to play all games well.

With that said, Cliff Joyner is not a spring chicken anymore, and if there's anybody who's known for their one-pocket skills, it's Cliff. He's been spotting people left and right, giving up tremendous weight, in ONE-POCKET throughout the years. Why not give the man his propers while he's still alive to enjoy them?!

If the point is to induct a player in based on his overall popularity, forum presence and/or legendary status -- and one-pocket skills are not required -- then I agree that are many legends of the sport who belong in the One-Pocket HOF.

That said, when I think of the term "one-pocket," how can Cliff Joyner not come an anybody's mind who's been involved in pool for the last 30 years?! He's heads and tails above all the other names in this thread when it comes to that game.

That's my opinion, and, by golly, I'm sticking with it. :D

I have to agree with this. Joyner deserves to be in the running. I also think Richie Rechieson {spelling?} deserves to be looked at.

Buddy Hall for the 1 hole hall

Buddy Hall for the 1 hole hall

I vote for Buddy Hall. Back in the 90's he experienced a bit of a renaissance in his game and was playing one pocket as good as anyone.

Second or third, or fourth. There are so many players that deserve to be recognized and the list is much longer than people realize. In every pool community around the country, there are giants who never leave their area due to job, family, personal reasons. Billy Palmer in the bay area is one such example. He has been one of if not the premier player in the bay area for years, yet he rarely travels. If he is in a tournament, he is the favorite.:heh

I will second the nomination of Joey Spaeth. Joey traveled the country playing, played in some Johnston City Tournaments. Sherm knows better than I do, but to my knowledge, Joey would match up and play any human 1p. He told me that he played Ronnie Allen 3 times.
Joey was a great guy and good friend. I wish he was still around to teach me how to play 1p.:)

It's not surprising that he's overlooked every year, because he's been dead for decades, but based on stories I've heard from every old-timer in NYC, Johnny Irish in his prime would have been the favorite over ALL the old northeast players (Shorty, Red, Ervolino, etc).

Freddy, not sure if you ever saw him play, but what's your opinion based on what you've heard?

When I went to Miami and Jack Kramer's Cue and Cushion, Johnny Irish had been there all winter the year before. From what I heard he was at least a ball over all the players you mentioned. One of the all-time best.
Beard

I nominate for the deceased category of the 1pkt HOF in the order of my opinion of their speed. (3 way tie for 2nd)

Johnny "Irish" Lineen #1

Eugene "Clem" Metz #2
Gene Skinner#2
Marcel Camp#2

Joey Speith #3

Hubert Cokes#4

If anyone wants to get involved with discussing the HOF in general, in particular prior decisions, I have moved that kind of post to a new thread in the Member's Cafe, so that this thread remains better on the topic of nominations for this year's One Pocket HOF elections:
http://www.onepocket.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5959

Thank you

You beat me to it because I'd also heard Johnny Irish Lineen(?) was a super-strong 1pocket player.

I nominate Shannon Daulton, again.

Hopefully now, all the requirements of him having to be a grandpap, him having played for 50+ years, him having done this or done that, are all met now and that he is FINALLY allowed to be on the ballot! :D

One of the very best who's ever lived and certainly the youngest of all-time to accomplish all that he has. There're guys already in the H.O.F. that don't have his playing credentials, including $ won in match-ups AND World Championships.

I agree.

I hate to voice my opinion very loudly because it comes from somewhat of a biased point of view. Cliff is the only other person who has a resume remotely close to Shannon. I am not going to list accolades, they are easy to find on this site, but Shannon's are more impressive to me that any of the others up for nomination. Cliff is also a good nominee based on his gambling prowess and a couple of major titles IMO. Buddy is the sentimental pick but I think these 2 guys have him bested as 1P specialists.

So...... my picks would be:

1. SD
2. Cliff

I'll vote for Shannon in about 15 years. Buddy, Ike, SJD, home boy (hendy) this year.

I played em all but I got weight when I knew who they were Bill.

You don't get in for going off to the champions for forty years, you have to beat them, but thanks for the thought.

When they have a category for beating them when we are old farts, I got a chance.:D

Why shouldn't that be included as a criteria for inclusion? Why hells yea it should. I want YOU For induction. That's a strange word isn't it?? Induction. It reminds me of my first day at college. I was alone and nervous and behind in every way because of military duty. I was in orientation and this Korean Babydoll starts talking to me and asks me if I commute. I said sure, with you I will. She thought I was trying to say something funny. So I just started laughing like yea, that's a joke, but I really didn't know what she said there for a little while. Then I thought it was something she said about getting high, since everybody was doing it. But she didn't speak real clear english so I had sort of an excuse. I was about the dumbest in the class. They're both very common words. But my point is that longevity is key. How many people in the United States can beat you that are much older that you?? At One Pocket of course. That's good enough for The HOF. I still say that several people should go in this year and catch up. This is not baseball where folks quit in their 20s and 30s. You shouldn't have to retire at pool and then wait a bunch of more years to get in. Like Artie Bodendorfer says (I love saying his name)=Everybody Goes When The Whistle Blows.......Thanks Jesus

I agree with you John. "BUT", since he isn't drawing social security yet, there's a handful of fellas here who want sentimental picks based on how near to death someone is over pure talent & accomplishments.

Hall of Fames, I thought, were for the greatest players. Not for decent players who aren't even in their own towns H.O.F.. But hey, they were fun to play with, good company to hang around with and besides, they're getting old. So lets give them a wink & a pass into the Hall of Fame.

Hall of Fame = "Famous" players who accomplished great things in their sport.

Hall of Fame here is starting to sound more like a pity-party club..."Let's get so & so in before he dies." Whether he ever won anything of significance or not, lets just get him in. "Why, I remember once back in 1962 when he bet $200.00 of his own money against......"

In the mean time, one of the best to have ever played the game, with bonafide major & multiple titles to his name, is left out because "he still has time."

Like any of us know for sure how long any of us will live.

Daulton is being penalized for being too good too young. Pure & simple. "IF" he was now in his 60's or 70's, he'd get the votes. It's kinda frustrating.

As for the "Deceased" catagory, I agree with my buddy Sherm....Joey Spaeth is a good pick. As is Hubert Cokes.

Terry,

This is exactly why I precused myself the last few years. If I had not taken the long hiatus, I know I would have been competitive, at one pocket, with just about with anyone, during that tournament, and action rich era. Then I may have really 'earned' a nod, very possibly, posthumously, 20 yrs. ago.:)....We'll never know, will we ? (in fact, if I remember, you chewed me out, for dropping out)..

As I have said before, I respect the guy's like Shannon, Buddy, and many others, who toughed it out, and stayed in the trenches. But, then again I still have to say, there are not many I see, that I would have traded places with.

I'm really OK with waiting another 30 or 40 years, if my turn in the HOF box ever comes....Maybe Grady or Fred's great grandson, will present the award to my great grandson....That'd be pretty neat wouldn't it ?...;) :D

Meanwhile, as I said before, its Shannon over Cliff, this year, I believe..

PS..Dead guy's...Hayden Lingo, or Johnny 'Irish' Lineen will get my vote. I also would hope they have survivors that, that would really care.

SJD,
Friendship aside, I'm of the opinion that you merit induction based on your level of play, gambling ability & reputation as someone who just would not give up. Humble or not, you also merit consideration based on longevity, albeit with a little break to (rightfully) better support your loved ones.

Fred will probably be miffed at me, but I was one who disagreed with Fats being inducted ahead of other, more worthy, candidates. That's maybe one of only two times I disagreed with the Beard.

Ronnie Allen & you were the names I remember as holding down the west coast fort. (Not counting when Grady was in San Fran)

I (and many others) wanted you on the ballot in years past, but you recused yourself.

Steve said last year that Shannon had to wait another year to be on any ballot. If he rules that way again, I have no problem or qualm whatsover nominating you for the ballot. You're a contender.

This part is hard to say because I have so much respect for you as a player and as a man. But I would be less than honest with you if I said I thought you deserved induction before Daulton or Buddy. That's not meant to degrade or belittle your game....you were one of the very best. I do believe, however, that in the all-time pecking order, Shannon Daulton ranks higher. To say otherwise I would be insulting your intelligence. You are, however, on the very short list (in my opinion) of men who are indeed worthy of induction into the One Pocket Hall of Fame.

Hopefully, and I sincerely mean that, it will happen in a few years! And God willing, we're all alive to see it!

I deeply appreciate you as my friend and greatly enjoy your contributions here. I sure hope I said all that I said in a respectful manner, because I do regard you highly.
