I would do the same Z, but off either the 3 or 5, whichever looked best at the table.

On Shane's shot I think I'd try to carom off the 12 to hit the 13 full in the face. Lots of ways to come out well without a perfect hit.

Nick, loosening up the balls like you illustrated may create an escape route for your opponent to start the grinding process of escaping from this perdicament. Loose balls can be viewed as tools (options) to use to manage positions.Taking an intentional to preserve and protect positions that are this threatening is an easy choice and should always be an option.
