Vegas sighting...

Vegas sighting...

During the BCA Open, Keith got a call from Harry Platis who was in Vegas at the time. Harry was playing in one of those big multi-dollar poker tournaments, I believe.

I did hear that Cole Dixon was there playing a guy named Freddie Boggs. Freddie is from Virginia, and he just moved to Las Vegas last year. Cole and Freddie were most probably playing one-pocket because that's Freddie's best game. I would love to know the outcome or how they matched up.

Like some great players of yesteryear, you can take them out of the pool world, but you can never take the pool out of their heart. I had heard he was living in Utah currently.

I wish I had a picture of him, but I don't, never having met him. Keith said he was one straight-shooting son of a gun in California when he was growing up, a real amiable character, kind of a surfer-looking kind of guy with a long blond ponytail.

I just found out the CORRECT spelling of his name, and it is D-i-c-k-s-o-n.

He just called Keith and is living in Montana, as Peter said. He still goes to the Vegas tournaments and is planning on coming to the Gulf Coast tournament in December.

Hearing from Cole brought a smile to Keith's face! :)

Jam, here is your pic. Although a bit younger. We played years ago when his hair was long and blonde, so was mine but not blonde. Keith would remember him then. I run into him in Vegas years later which this picture reminds me of. He was hanging around with Ronnie Allen at the time. He lived here in Phoenix about 4 years ago but I never seen him.

Here is the link taken from Shots Moves and Strategies, Enjoy , http://cole-dickson.mypicgallery.com/mpg/Route.asp

Has anyone seen Cole Dickson???????
My dad had just seen Cole in Oregon a couple months back. My father works for a Casino and his boss new Cole as a poker player, the same boss new my father was one of the better pool players from Northern California in the late 60's early 70's and asked my dad if he new Cole. My dad told him yes, and he told my dad that Cole was going to be coming out that way. So they all met up there and my dad said that Cole wasn't looking too good.
My dad told me that back around 1970 Cole Dickson was probobly the best player in California.

Cole Dickson

Even though I quit playing pool a long time ago, when a friend of mine in Billings said he knew Cole Dickson, I asked him to set up some kind of game. He said that Cole has a table at his house and that we could play there. He did mention that Cole didn't play for "just fun." (As if I didn't know that!)
I went to Cole's house and he escorted me to a separate building/room behind his house. He turned on the lights and all that was in the room was a couple of chairs and Gold Crown!

How cool! Playing one pocket with Cole Dickson at his house on his table!

Although he said he hadn't picked up a cue for three months (and I believe him) he absolutely drilled me-lots of 4 and 5 ball runs followed by leaving me right in front of my pocket.

He mentioned that he was going to Louisiana in December and was going to stay at Mike Johnson's (Jensen Cues) house.

I go up to Billings on a regular basis and I've certainly wasted and blown money on a lot sillier things than playing pool with Cole Dickson. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting him and look forward to donating a little more $$$ to a legend.

Steve, I haven't heard anything about Dickson showing up over in New Orleans. Perhaps either he went to Baton Rouge, or he's just planning to come over to Gulfport on Tues. evening. I don't know in which city Mike Johnson lives. The Gulfport Grand is about 60-75 minutes from the Corner Pocket poolroom near the N.O. airport.

Are you coming down Tuesday?

Mike Johnson of Jensen Custom Cues did make a cue stick for Cole Dickson recently. Mike lives in Baton Rouge, LA. His e-mail is jensencues @ cox.net, and he also has a website: Jensen Cues website

Tony Banks was in Baton Rouge not too long ago and called Keith from Mike Johnson's workshop. Mike goes back a long ways and knows what the players are looking for in the way of good-hitting cue. He uses only the best materials for his sticks, and each one of them is a masterpiece.

The new generation of players seem to be attracted to the Predator shafts, but the old-school players desire shafts with old wood and a lot of forward balance.

Mike made a cue stick for Keith very recently, and Keith is currently using it in hopes that this might be his weapon of mass destruction. ;)

It's a beautiful cue. I showed it to Ted Harris the other day at a tournament. Ted is a great cue-maker in my neck of the woods, and he also provides cue maintenance at many events. Ted looked it over thoroughly and said, "This is a really, really nice cue, very well made." Coming from Ted, that speaks volumes (IMO)!

At the same tournament when Ted was checking it out, Keith showed it to Young Gun "Max," one-pocket mechanic in my area. Max really liked the way the cue hit, too, and wanted to get one like it.

Mike worked with Keith on the phone and got all of Keith's particulars that he likes in a cue, forward balance, nice old grainy wood for the shaft with a long professional taper, and ivory ferrules, of course. As soon as I buy batteries for my digital camera, I'll post a picture! :)

Players like Cole, Keith, and Tony Banks know who's who in the cue-making world, and Mike knows what they're looking for in a cue stick. Mike Johnson said he may attend the Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge. If you all get a chance to go there, check out his booth.

Cole’s daughter works at the local pool hall in Anchorage (Anchorage Billiard Palace). She plays with a Jensen that her dad bought for her. It hits great and I really like the clean uncluttered look. I was thinking I might try to get one soon.

Jensen Cues

"If I Only Had It Over To Do Again..." About two years ago I bought a Jensen Cue on Ebay. The cue was not signed and I called Mike Johnson to verify that it was a Jensen. He asked that I send him a picture of the cue. He emailed me back and said that he not only recognized the cue - he remembers making it for Wade Crane. He says Crane ordered the cue and when he came in to pick it up, he liked another cue better and bought it instead. That cue hit as good as any SS jointed cue I have ever hit (other than when I hit a couple of balls with Cole's cue when I was in Billings). I sold it and made a pretty penny but "If I Only Had It To Do Over Again." I spoke to Mike Johnson a couple of nights ago. He has several cues finished to take to a show. He will be selling whatever he has left over from the show. I have been told that the Jensen hit is virtually indistinguishable from a Szmaboti.

Jensen cues

Im definately one of the users that uses Jensen cues and love all the hits and feel of all three of my jensen cues. Matter a fact few weeks ago I was over there picking up my new shaft and he got me too look at a couple more of his new ones and Im definately going back and making it my fourth Jensen. Its good to live 20 minutes away from his shop cause he is the only one who I get to replace the tips or to recondition the shaft

Speaking of Cole,Keith and tony, I was able to meet Tony for the first time here in Baton Rouge and got to play scotch doubles against him last night and tonightat one of the calcutta tournyments I got to go head to head with him the first game of the night. I enjoyed every moment even up to the point where i choked on the easy side pocket shot and the rest was history....lol...I Lost...lol. He is one heck of a shooter and position player.
