Hello guys,

I'm relatively new to this forum. I live across the pond here in London and this is essentially my first meaningful thread.

I've had some time to spare so I watched again all of my DVDs from Legends of One Pocket II Philadelphia style 1991 (the one that Steve Cook won), with a view to reconstructing the brackets from the commentary and my observations of the players on adjacent tables. I managed to identify all of the matches from the last 32 and up. However, it gets a lot harder for the earlier stages as the only match that appears to have been recorded from the qualifying rounds is Jersey Red v Bob Osborne. So here you go.

Code:
Winner Loser Stage Score	Date Commentary
Steve Cook Steve Mizerak F 5-2	21/07/1991	Bill Incardona, Grady Mathews, Buddy Hall
Steve Cook Allen Hopkins SF 5-4	21/07/1991	not taped
Steve Mizerak Nick Varner SF 5-2	21/07/1991	Bill Incardona, Grady Mathews
Nick Varner Jimmy Fusco QF 5-4	20/07/1991	Grady Mathews, Jimmy Fusco
Steve Mizerak Pete Fusco QF 5-2	20/07/1991	not taped
Allen Hopkins Danny Diliberto QF 5-3	20/07/1991	Bill Incardona, Bill Staton
Steve Cook Buddy Hall QF 5-4	20/07/1991	not taped
Nick Varner Mike LeBron last 16 5-?	20/07/1991	not taped

Allen Hopkins Roger Griffis last 16 5-?	20/07/1991	not taped
Danny Diliberto Ralph Carnes last 16 5-?	20/07/1991	not taped
Steve Cook Leonard "Bugs" Rucker last 16 5-3	20/07/1991	no commentary
Buddy Hall Grady Mathews last 16 5-?	20/07/1991	not taped
Nick Varner Frank Di Giorgio (sp) last 32 5-?	19/07/1991	not taped
Mike LeBron Eddie Hodan last 32 5-?	19/07/1991	not taped
Jimmy Fusco William "Jopling" Marshall	last 32 5-?	19/07/1991	not taped
Jim Rempe Scotty Townsend last 32 5-?	19/07/1991	not taped
Steve Mizerak John "Cornflakes" Hennigan	last 32 5-0	19/07/1991	no commentary

Roger Griffis Billy "Cornbread Red" Burge	last 32 5-?	19/07/1991	not taped
Danny Diliberto Freddie Bentivegna last 32 5-4	19/07/1991	not taped
Ralph Carnes Ronnie Allen last 32 5-?	19/07/1991	not taped

Buddy Hall Lou Butera last 32 5-1	19/07/1991	Bill Incardona, Ron Williams
Grady Mathews Jaffar "Patch-eye" Basheer	last 32 5-?	19/07/1991	not taped

Apparently, Cecil, Efren, and a bunch of other great players bit to dust in the early stages of the tourney. I know that Strawberry lost to Dick Weaver in the first round but who beat Cecil and Efren? Does anyone know?

I hope you guys will find the thread useful as I couldn't find diddly-squat on this tourney elsewhere. I will try to do the same for the first LOP tourney (won by Allen Hopkins) some time next year.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Cheers,
Terry

A great mix, indeed, Steve! I also found a poster from the event on facebook (attached).

Do you know if there is a program available anywhere ?

Cheers,
Terry

I can ask a few people Terry. I am in Philly and this poster is hanging in a couple rooms here (Fuscos and Drexeline) and the owners may know something.

What a neat little project, Terry! It's nice to see the results all laid out like you have done. I have a few of the recorded matches from that event, but I never knew who won it. And I didn't realize that it was single elimination. Good job!

Thanks Doc. I think three out of four Legends of One Pocket (Jan-1991, Jul-1991, and 1992) were single elimination and only the fourth LOP in 1998 was a double elimination.

Edit. The poster above says "single elimination" in the middle.

The thing that puzzles me is why the second semis match (Cook-Hopkins) was not taped. Apparently, Pat had two cameras as both Diliberto-Hopkins and Varner-Fusco quarter-final matches (which occurred at the same time) were captured. One can only see few glimpses of that match on a Mizerak-Varner DVD as the camera switched over a couple of times. Steve was losing 1-4 at some point and managed to fight through and came out 5-4. It's so sad that Pat decided not to tape what appears to be a great match...

Great memories, FastEddieF. Do you happen to have any material from the tourney (posters, programs, magazine articles)?

Thanks for doing this Terry, cool to see. I wonder if Pat has the results of all the matches from that tournament? They started off collecting stats for all the pool matches before they started taping them, so I could imagine him having at least the results sitting around somewhere.

Also, wow, what a poster! If anyone knows of one that someone is willing to part with, let me know... :D

If posters could talk...thanks for putting this up. Back in the day I bought quite a few of those matches and sat at the knee of the masters as I tried to learn this great game.

btw, decent pool tables are hard to find in London, much less a decent one pocket game, but the last two times I've been over there visiting my wife's family, I've matched up with Rico Dix at the Hurricane near King's Cross. He's more of a lapsed 9 ball and 14.1 shooter, but he likes 1p and you might be able to entice him into a friendly game for a few quid.

I pulled up my spreadsheet of accustats, that was a period I was an especially active collector. Looking over it briefly I do not think my list answers any of your questions. I hope my list helps.

I was actually friends, or maybe more like sparring aquaintences, with Cecil. I do not know who beat him though.

Pat is good at responding to my emails with DVD orders but less so otherwise.:( Perhaps, someone on this forum can ask him and get a response?

Thanks Michael. I do usually play at the Hurricane's near King's Cross, being the closest pool hall to my workplace.

You are right about the pool tables - they are not the best and the usual high humidity amplifies that a great deal but there we are.

It's really hard to get any one-pocket action in London indeed so thank you for the tip-off. I haven't played Rico Dix.

Cheers,
Terry

Thanks for the trouble El Chapo. A nice collection of those early matches you have.

P.S. I've just learned that Jersey Red lost to Lou Butera in the second round.
