How can you have a big tournament like this one without having open restaurants. Count them, room service, NO. Sandwich, No, steaks, no, other sandwich shop, NO. WTF. I fly three thousand miles and stay at an "upper" class casino and no friggin choices to eat because the restaurants are CLOSED.
How about returning this DERBY event to Kentucky

an "upper" class casino

Harrahs is an upper class casino like the South Bronx is an upper class neighborhood.

The Derby is the only reason I ever darken one of their doors.

But I think there's good evidence that Diamond/Greg Sullivan are doing the best they can do for us. If they could find a better place, we'd be there.

When I buy a new table it will be a Diamond. I really appreciate their efforts on behalf of the sport. It sure looks to me like love of the game must have a lot to do with it, not just run-of-the-mill promotion.

My sense is that the restaurants are run as private concessions and only pay rent to the casino. I remember one of the restaurants near the tournament was Paula Dean's. I'm sure the rent they pay is as usurious as the room tally. They probably have a rough time making profit and staying in business. They are probably closed between tenants.

I've got a wild idea: Let's put the "Derby City Classic" in Derby City, not this shithole casino in Elizabeth, Indiana.

Can anyone explain to me why they think Mike Delawder is a good player? Maybe he was drunk and or high, but the two times I saw him play, he did not look even shortstop speed. My take was he was more of a gambler than an actual dedicated player.

Because He WINS, most of the time, playing rotation games!

Food

Food

Maybe I don't understand business and I can understand being closed during the slow seasons as they do in Santa Cruz during the winter. But when the hotel promotes an event, selling hundreds of rooms not normally occupied during that time, wouldn't a business person see that as an opportunity?
Back to my rant about the non restaurants. I figured out why it bothers me so much that four of the five restaurants are closed when I want to eat. I am on PST. By the time I get up, adjusted to the day light, beautified my face, etc, it is 9am Pacific time. Noon EST, and by then the restaurants are closed. I still am plenty miffed about it because late Wednesday night I ordered room service at 11:30pm and ate half my meal. The next day, the restaurants being closed, I ate the rest of my meal which was a salad. The toe mat toes were kinda wishie and soggy so I only ate one.
Later that afternoon, I bribed Col Billie with a lunch at Legends for a ride to the airport the next day. John ate with us and we were having a great time. I ordered the fish and chips, (highly recommend it) substituting a baked poe ta toe for fries. With it came a nice spicy red sauce that had a good bite to it. My stomach felt a little queasy so half went back to the refrigerator in the room.
During the finals of The Lions demolition of the one pocket finals, the stomach was barking at me. Back to the room without finishing the finals, (Alex, you were frigging awesum) and straight to the porcelain bus. I spent the night until six or seven dry heaving.
The only plus about this was, this night I kept John up all night with my motorcycle running instead of the opposite.
Anyway, I still have a queazy stomach three days later.
I did get the discounted room but unless they do something about the food situation, I'm staying home and watching the one pocket on the feed.
I have to say this about Steve, he found me every time I walked into the tournament area. I walk in, Hi Bill, and there he was, camera in hand.
I will never play with those fake pool balls again the rest of my life. Translucent cue ball? Whose bright idea was that? Trying to safe a ball by barely nicking it was nearly impossible.
Anyway, I go to see the worlds best one pocket players and I saw them. Alex, you da man.

The casino doesn't seem to try to do much to make it anything worth writing home about.
Hopefully Greg can find another spot soon, and instead of enjoying the tournament but hating the rest of the experience.
