Default Want to speed up the game?

Most of us seem to think a faster pace of play -- and more viewer enjoyment that would follow -- would help the growth of the game.

A good friend of mine suggests these:

1. Any player who bends down to shoot, addresses the shot and takes warm up strokes, and then stands up to rethink the shot, will be issued a warning. One warning per inning. If it happens a second time in any given inning it is loss of game. [I'd say just a 1-ball foul]

Habitual offenders will be allowed a total of 5 warnings per match. The 6th warning constitutes loss of match. [I wouldn't treat anyone differently than anyone else]

2. Any player who chalks his cue and then lays the chalk down will not be allowed to pick the chalk back up until the next inning. Infractions will result in loss of game. [I'd say a one-ball foul] Three such infractions in any match will result in disqualification from the tournament. [Nah, one-ball foul each time is enough for me]

3. Another issue that needs to be addressed is penalizing a player for holding up the game by standing and staring at the table with incredulity, for an extended period, after a missed shot [or when coming to the table after a bad roll with a need for spectators to notice how "unlucky" he is.] After a miss, the next shooter must have unimpeded access to the table within 15 seconds. If he is obstructed because of a grandstanding act by the opponent, the opponent receives a warning. Two warnings in any game result in loss of game. [I'm for a one-ball foul here too] Three such warnings in any match result in loss of match. [I'd make the delay 5 seconds, and each infraction just one ball.]

Gotta have a ref, and they're harsh, but each deals with an unnecessary delay.

Whaddaya think?

The game is what it is, stop trying to speed it up or make changes.

Aye aye, sir, if you say so.

(But thanks for pointing out that the game is what it is. I hadn't noticed.)

Darmoose's score doesn't ever move backwards gets my vote. Take a scratch or foul into a pocket, the other guy gets a ball.

Not a thing wrong with that opinion. I just thought I was being rudely told to stuff mine.

I think my friend and I are both a little tongue-in-cheek here. I really wish I didn't have to watch people do the things punishments are being suggested for here, but it's not as though I think it would ever be possible to stop them.

Just an extreme way to say, "Quit taking so much time for NO reason."

Yup, I agree people should not drag out play and be dramatic and every thing you pointed out I agree with, just don't think the rules should or could be changed to reflect it.

No disrespect intended at all.

You, my friend, obviously have hidden powers and admirable qualities.

You wouldn't like playing with me. Sometimes I get down on a shot and when I'm trying to get ready to shoot it that's when I realize that something feels wrong so I stand up and take another look.
