Howdy All;

Been watching some 1P match-ups on you tube and noticed that the opponets
sometimes switch pockets with each game, or take whoever sinks a ball into
a pocket then that's their side.I was under the impression that once the pockets
were determined that that was the way they stayed. Here's one example it's at
Red Shoes so maybe it's a "local thing";

Thanks for the thoughts.

Anytime its your break, you can choose any pocket you want, same for your opponent

Not sure exactly what you meant by that video. It looked normal to me at the start anyway.

In One Pocket the breaker always "chooses their pocket" before they break. In practice because the break is so standard, most players will not actually "call" their pocket, because it is considered obvious by the direction they break toward. That is when the breaker uses the conventional break, which is 99.9% of the time. So if someone was to use an odd break, yes then they should definitely "call" their pocket before their break.

And like you said, once the game starts, your pocket is your pocket until the game is over. Then typically your opponent gets the break (alternate break format), and on their break, they can chose whichever pocket they want (well, either of the bottom two corners lol). And that is the way it is for every game -- the breaker gets to chose and can keep breaking to the pocket they broke toward last game or they can change it up and break toward the other pocket if they become so inclined for a subsequent game.

Keep watching, reading and learning. One Pocket is actually a simple game in terms of the basic format -- it's the shots and strategies that get complicated sometimes :D:D

There is a good introduction here:

Others have already answered, but just in case you need to hear it another way: the breaker chooses his pocket at the beginning of each game.

Thanks for the clarification. By "game" I should have said match. Not sure why I
was thinking that way ... must have misunderstood the basic rules. Just looked at them
(rules), again and clearly saw the answer when I hadn't before I submitted my question.
Must have skimmed over that part, shame on me :eek: , :lol .

John is a straight shooter and a good dude. One of several like that at RS. He's good tough competition for sure.
