This came up in a game yesterday. I am pocket A. I couldn't 2 rail it cause I couldn't get the cue ball past the side pocket and if I didn't make it I would probably sell out a bank or leave some kind of shot. I chose to try to bunt it down table and lay it up in front of the hole and I hit it bad and left him a 3-railer which he hit so bad he left me a shot at my hole which I missed so bad I left him nearly straight in. My question is what would be some other safety options. I may have this diagram screwed up. If I do, I'll try again.[CUETABLE]http://CueTable.com/P/?@1Abpj3PNdf3QcQx3kNti3kOCb3kMGL3kNtd3kOCf4kAsh4kaxp4kICP4kICQ4kIbR@[/CUETABLE]

The one was on the spot.

blackee,

If this was the original position then I do not see how the cueball traveled as shown with the 1 ball only going where it is shown. Are you certain of the angles?

If this is the original position for the shot, let us know. Sometimes the simplest appearing shots can be maddening in one-pocket.

Yeah, and with only one pocket to score in, and six pockets to scratch in, if you suffer from carelessness or diminished execution skills at this game, you are a big favorite to scratch long before you score. (would that be a 6 to 1 favorite in this situation?)

Yet I might try to two rail just over to my side, as shown. This shouldn't leave a shot, but it could leave an easy return for your opponent that might come back to bite a little later...

i would shoot the 1 to the long rail near the side pocket on my opponents side of the table with right hand english .let the q go down to the head rail and back up table so that the q is on my opponents side close to his pocket and the 1 ends up on my side of the table abouut a diamond or so up from the corner on the same side as my pocket at the other end (head) of the table. hope this is clear.

Your shot seems to be a kiss, if you're gonna chance a kiss you could shoot it like this.

Finally, the right shot. The shot was superbly covered in my first DVD Banks that dont go -- but do! (and from an even tougher angle.)

lll,

Is this what you are describing? The shot that Rod shows is probably the shot from here, even though he moved the one ball off of the spot.
Playing this safety shot is riskier than banking the ball straight back.

P.S. lll, isn't about time that you started WEI'ing? Think of the fun you could have.

I like your assessment of the situation Steve. I just butchered the shot. I thought it was the best shot fo ME at that particular time.

The ball can also be made, or gotten real close, with this shot, using center left english:

That's the shot I wanted to shoot Doc, but I was a little thinner on the object ball than the diagram depicts and too close to the rail to get enough on the cue ball to spin it past the side pocket.

that was close to the shot i was talking about and dont think there is a kiss .although i dont put my opponent in trouble just live for another inning. i need to find the bank in freedys dvd to see it made does seem extreme to me. docs shot seem more makeable. dennis this weekend ill try to find the time to learn the wei. ill print out your notes and practice. steve what about setting up that practice area that blackeee suggested ? if the dcc has practice rooms us newbie weiers should have one at onepocket.org. what do you think?

I hear ya. Even in this layout, if you hit the OB too full, there is a danger of scratching in the side.

Blackeee,
Sorry you missed my feeble attempt at humor. The coming few weeks, I will not be fit company, much less a productive citizen.
I like lll's shot (post 6) best. Unless you are a top player in dead punch, all the others look pretty dicey. I don't see a kiss on that shot with R.H english.
