Oh wow! There's a blast from then past!
I have not seen Whitey in over 25 years (since the days at Beechmont Billiards). He used to come in there all the time and like most of us always tried to get in action.
I remember him playing all games but the one game that he played more than any (that I remember) was golf.
He was a mean mammy jammy on that snooker table. He had the strangest stroke but he sure hit them pretty good with it. From what I remember, he would aim and when he stroked he would spin the heck out of the ball and by the time it arrived at the OB, it would spin it right in...strange to see but effective for him.
His son, Tommy Stephenson (also known as Blackie) is the real killer though
One of the best strokes I have seen, he plays jam up anything with a stick and ball. I have not played him myself but I heard from someone who has played him recently that he probably plays right under the pro level. Someone told me hew plays about like Shannon Murphy. I have only played Murphy once and was cheap action and I got 10/5 and broke even.
Before the Chohan / Orcollo matches, Murphy as to play Chohan. Chohan was giving up 9/8 playing one hole and Murphy was giving up 9/8 playing banks but I don't think they ever locked horns but I would have loved to see it!
Glad you got to play Whitey some. Without seeing his game in 20+ years I would give you the edge Bruce in one hole but dont get on the snooker table with him!
