I read in a lot of the interviews and old stories on here about the players going to Hot Springs, Arkansas before they started having the Johnston City tournament...

Does anybody know where to find any pics from back then..?

Thanks

No, don't have any pics but it was the action spot partly because of the race track and it being a holiday spot for gangsters in the 20's and 30's! They loved the bath houses back then. Al Capone and the rest!

Before my time even..

Before my time even..

Johnston City started in 1961. The action in Hot Springs was a few years before that. Well before my time. I used to go there every year with my father from when I was about 4 years old. So I didnt have too much of an idea of what kind of action was about. Later, my pop told me that they had actual gambling Casino's on Central Ave. There was pretty good pool action there in the 90s when I would go there and stay for the entire race meet.

Having spent a lot of time in Hot Springs, I always thought/heard that Johnson City was for pool players to hustle pool players, most being solid players but Hot Springs was for taking down the high rollers after the track day. I know Titanic Thompson (from Arkansas) almost lived there every Summer. I met Fats in Blytheville, another action spot, then first time and saw him in Hot Springs several times in the 1960's. It was there he told me, "The ponies will break your heart!" :)

I was in Hot Springs in 1963. A guy there had a new 1964 Olds Starfire. I thought it was the finest car I'd seen. I asked the fellow I was with, Who owns that car.
He must be rich.;)
He said some fat guy staying at the Vapors, he has too borrow $100.00 a day to eat and sleep.
They call him New York Fat.:D

The Olds 442 came out in 64 or 5.The Starfire was more for the family yet a beautiful car like so many back then. One of the colors Olds used was a rich burgandy. Some say it was the inspiration for Little Anthony's "Tears get in your eyes"..........Lots of kids conceived in the back seats back then. Some are typing away here today......

Androd, how did you remember the Vapors? I am almost sure it aint there anymore, and it sure hasnt been significant in over 20 years. It was down the street from the Majestic Hotel, which was also once significant but no more, it's an old folks home now. That's where I would usually stay, not in the old folks home, but in the old classic hotel. The Vapors also once had big-time entertainment in their night club, but the street that it was on is now pretty much Hot Springs slum.

Side note for those pervishly inclined, the age required to work in the strip clubs in HS was 16! They were just not allowed to drink.
There were several clubs within yards of the Majestic Hotel. Did I ever spend any time in those lustful dens? I know they had 'em when Androd was there, if he will 'fess, I will 'fess.

Rod,

My family still has anyplace on Lake Hamilton there and we have a reunion there every year. The bath row is still there but nothing like it used to be. The Vapors is not there, of course, but the one I'm Memphis probably still is! :) Fats mademmore of his name "change" than Myra Breckenridge did of her sex change, I think! He had made the "transition" by the time I first met him. He was with The Arab, an Alabama hustler(Moore) and Cleo Vaughn back then.

Dee, was that "Junior" Moore? He's actually a little older than Squirrel (!), but he still plays pretty good one-pocket around Mobile. Knows every shark move in the book.;)

I never got to meet Cleo, but he was evidently the best one-pocket player in the South, and one of the best in the country. I believe he had a room for many years in Mobile. Any Cleo Vaughan stories?

I'll sure confess. I'm a bonafide shorteyed from way back. I read all the material on Fats, and have to confess I didn't really realize he played that good. I knew about Jimmy Moore but that was so fascinating. I watched every segment without missing a word.

Cleo was a short card, poker and pool player.
Cleo was rumored to have lost 90 thousand + to Weenie Beanie in the late 1950's or early 1960's in Blytheville Ark.
He was driving a 8/10 year old chevy and living in a small house. That was a huge amount of money at that point in time.
I was with Joe Cosgrove and Joe played him 9 ball in Marked Tree Ark. in 1965.
I seem to remember that's were he was from. (?)
After the game Cleo told me he'd been working in Las Vegas for three or so years. He said he played in the smaller poker games with every paycheck and got pumped up, but never in those years beat the big games.

A few years later I heard he had part of the room in Mobile.
Later Ronnie Allen said he promised to play all the road players, but called all over and got a line on them, then had an excuse every day until their nut had run up.
That made them easier to match up with. :(
He was a force to be dealt with in his room.
He lost a couple of times to Richard Austin in South Haven Miss. He beat Richard every time in Mobile. :)

Rod.

I was playing the best 9 ball in the country in the late 60's (67 to 70) I went to Mobile to play Cleo. He owned a pool room in Mobile where they would play dominos everyday. Jr. Moore also lived there. Jr. was a top gin rummy player who I saw in Vegas playing all the champions in the 70's. Anyways when I was in Mobile trying to play Cleo he put the stall on me, and me and my backer would stay in the hotel betting Cleo the sports. We got broke betting the sports and had to leave. I later went to Mobile with Jimmy Fusco and Pittsburgh John, around 1969, Cleo asked me for the 8 and 9 and I gave it too him. We played $500 a game and I beat him 10 games in record time. I believe he only won maybe 3 or 4 games. He said that I was the best 9 ball player that ever came through, but what can you expect from a man that just lost 10 ahead in about an hr? But I was playing good. I would love to go back in time and rehash some of the times I played great. But wouldn't we all.

Doc,

Yes, that was Junior. Cleo seemed to split his time between Blythville and Mobile if he wasnin trouble in one place, he'd go to the other. He lost his pool hall in Blythville but won it back! he could play, even in the late 60's but was a much stronger "home" player. he was brutal at doctoring a table and actually cut a hole in his office roof so Junior could spy on other player's hands!

Cleo could gin up a backer, dump him and put the touch on him the next day! never have seen a betternguy to come up with cash when absolutely everyone was broke. he once told me his goal was to die owing everyone! junior was just as treacherous but a bit quieter. I know a great story or two but the statute of limitations doesn't run out in some cases! :)

Junior is supposed to still be kicking here but I have not seen him in 20 years! I had a kid who plays pretty sporty say he could still play!

Billy, was that the only time you ever played Cleo?
