I am very pleased to announce that there will be a rather major "mini" One-handed One Pocket tournament at the upcoming Derby City Classic. Greg Sullivan is very supportive -- to the tune of $1000 added himself! In addition we already have another $350 commitments from the instigators here on OnePocket.org :). But it would be great to bump this up to $2000 added, to make sure this attracts the very best at this special art.

One-handed One Pocket had been a semi-regular event at the Derby until 2005, attracting some great players, including some not often otherwise seen at the Derby, like Warren 'Monk' Costanza, pictured below in 2005 at the mini that year.

Details are still being worked out, like exactly which night this mini will fall on, but we have the right kind of support in place!

So, one-handed fans and players, get yourselves ready!! And if you can afford to chip in something to help make this a bigger and better event, please step forward, which you can do anonymously or publicly, you have our respect and appreciation either way.

Steve

Monk played great one handed. But todat Tooby would be the best one handed player. Unless Eferine or Parica plays better.

That's great news Steve. Hopefully we can get some more added money to hit the $2k mark. Let us know when the time and date are set. Off to practice...

Back in the 60's there was a player in Parker's on Washington Ave in Houston that played with the cue under his arm due to the fact that he had a disability. He played one pocket. He disappeared for a long time. I saw him at Cue and Cushion on Shepherd in Houston after 30 or more years. He told me his job prevented him from going into pool rooms since he was working for the government. Interesting fellow.

Now we just need a one ball one pocket tourney. :D
I actually was thinking about that, too -- as an idea that would be fun. That might be something we could do in the AZ/1pocket.org room -- how long could it take?? But for this one-handed thing, it would be great to get the prize fund up to $2000 added and get a real strong turnout...

Forget about the philipinos, Tano Carrillo is the most amazing thing in pool. he has a small nub on one shoulder and less on the other, shoots with his body and plays exceptionally well. He played in a nine ball tournament in Las Vegas in the late 70's, won the lag and ran 5 racks. Pretty impressive for a man with no arms. His list of accomplishments is beyond belief.

Rod,

I've heard of this young man, but know very little about him. Didn't he sometimes use his feet (toes) for certain shots.
The human spirit is truely, an amazing thing.
Those of us lucky enough to be born somewhat [sic] normal, can never appreciate what he has accomplished.

Every "Carney" I've met over the years, used consider it very bad luck/karma...to take advantage, or beat, a person with a handicap, no matter how minimal that disability may be.

Those with semi-minor disabilities, (one arm, one leg, one eye... etc.) I sometimes felt would use that as way to gain sympathy, and would be very prone to using it against you. Sort of like beating a girl.

Some of them, (not all) regardless of their disability, can still be real A-hole's, just like the rest of us.. Bottom line is...they are after YOUR cash, aren't they ?
I just used to just dodge them, but I've seen many a player go off to them.

It would be interesting to hear our "head Carney" (or Freddy's) take on that awkward situation.

San <--- has played with NO f-ing brain, all his life...does that count as a disability ?.

I never seen Artie show any mercy on anybody. When Pony dropped dead on him playing one pocket, I still believe he went thru Pony's pockets to get the stakes before the meat wagon arrived. If he didnt, he wanted to.

if i'm making $$$ by the time the Derby rolls around, I will post up some $$$ for the event.

When I was 18-21 I watched Monk play countless hours of one-handed 1P, sometimes I was playing on the box next to him, or sweating something else while watching his action too. He used to play Phillipe LaRosa at Great American constantly, I wasnt really into 1P back then, like I am now, but I did enjoy watching him. He is a great marathon player too as everyone knows. I sure would like to see him play again.

I believe that I have said in the past that if they had a one-handed tourney at the DCC then I would put "Miami" in it. He's back home on the island now and I don't have the slightest idea how to contact him. But I am trying to find him. I know he won't be playing very well, because as he told me for 20 years, "me no play in a month". Which was only true one time, when his wife wanted the house painted and he was too cheap to pay someone to do it. He did it himself in the brutal heat of a bad summer. He was a walking basketcase for a week after he painted that house.

P.S. I told him once that after he's gone from this earth for 30 days, I'm going to go to his grave and write on it "me no play in a month". I said "that's the only time it would ever be true." You have no idea how many times I heard that through the years.

That would be great Dennis. I think I might have a go-between contact -- I'll give them a try.

Thanks Steve. I think he would like to come and play but I have not seen him for 6 or 7 years I guess. He must be in his mid 70's by now, maybe even a little older. He always had good health though, never smoked or drank and definitely no drugs.

Steve,

I made contact (e-mail) with Ray and he gave me Miami's phone #. I will call him on friday. It sounds like he may be a little reluctant to come but I'll work on him. He told Ray that he has not been practicing one-handed but I'd bet a dollar that he is now.
