Derby City question

I plan on attending the Derby City for the first time this year, and hope to get into some big one pocket matches. I have never been there so I don't know what to expect. My question is when is the best time to go? I really don't want to go for the whole 8 days, but I don't wan tot miss any of the action either. I am a high stakes player who keeps a low profile, and am still very unknown. Is it better to go in the beginning, or more towards the end? Or does it matter at all?

Thanks,

Jesse

There'll be a BIG fish there with unlimited dinero by the name of Roberto Melrose - you should see if you can sneak up on him.

The one pocket tournament always starts on Sunday. So I suggest Sun thru Wed.

my grandad had a saying, "if you're looking for a fight, you can usually find one."

i don't know if there is a "right" answer. seems like the busiest time is the first weekend, banks brings in the local/regional guys and about that time all the onepocket players are coming in and not broke or busted yet.

happy hunting.

As it gets closer to the start of the 9 ball, it gets harder to find a table to play on after you get matched up, so I'd say earlier is better for that reason too. Good point about not busted yet. :D

If you're in Dallas any time soon you can PM me and we can match up. But to answer your question I would go before the one pocket tournament starts if you're interested in matching up playing one pocket. If you go when the one pocket tournament is on then all your potential customers will be in the tournament and your chances of playing are less than if you go earlier in the tournament.

You have got some good advice here. The actions starts early, sometimes even before Friday.

The Derby is set up with about 40 or 50 9' tables scattered in multiple tournament rooms on two floors of the Horseshoe. The tournament tables are mostly or entirely in use from about 10 or 11 AM until about 11 or 12 at night. But once they are not using them for tournament matches they become available for practice or gambling -- all night long. The tournament tables only closed for about an hour for cleaning around 8 AM. They are Diamond smart tables and hence they are coin fed overnight (unlocked for the tournament hours only). I think they cost like $5/20-30 minutes or something like that.

In addition there is the "action room" which has about 8 full sized tables and one or two 7' tables. That is all coin operated all the time and also close to 24/7 except for short cleaning break. The action room tables are never interrupted for tournament matches.

I went on Thursday once but they were still setting up and not open for business. Also, the real action always starts at Midnight when the vampires come out. The atmosphere changes totally. You hear loud woofing and believe me, there is money--at least in the first few days. Don't miss it.

I have done different scenarios. First time I stayed for all three events and then for the Banks and One Pocket. Now mostly the one pocket. I would recommend staying for the Banks and One Pocket. I have to fly out by myself as my Buds are getting too old to travel so I am paying the full cost. The event is pricey with the airfare and hotel costs. I would set aside 2K for the trip and then add on your gambling funds.

Last year I decided not to go to all the events and went to the one pocket only. Since my injury I dont have the firepower to compete so I get the same seats every year to watch rather than play the tournament. I like to watch. We got there on a Sunday and stayed until Friday. I think next year I am leaving one day earlier to get there on Saturday. I do enjoy the banks but it is the one pocket that gets my draw. Last year I was online booking a room in the area not necessarily just the Casino. It turned out that by booking through an online site, we got our room for half the price of the "special". As far as action, I have always found that if you show up at the Derby with pockets full of cash, you will get a game.
If you want action next week, come to Houston, bunch of old gezzhers will be wasting their end years competing.

Than you all for the advice! I look forward to this years derby. I usually bet between 500-2000 per game, or up to $10K per set. I'm assuming games like this happen all the time at the derby?

You'll have to look on the outskirts and in the little rooms if you're betting that cheap there.

It's the DCC. Step up or stay home.

LMAO!

I'd say you'd have to beat some pretty good players to like it for those prices. I'd also say, like everywhere else, it'll be a lot easier to find good $100-$200 action than $500-$1000, but the good news is that it's there.

that a good place to go where everyone else gets to see how you play. after that your action is killed all over the world. then you get not games you can win.

if few know you and you gamble big the last thing you want to do is play where many can see and identify you later.

go there and watch if you want and learn all the speeds of the suckers. then find where they play and root each out later on when you can win in relative private.
