Playing 1P ,you have 5 balls and your opponet has none,he scratches and all the balls are above the head string,which ball get spotted ? Closest to the back rail or closest to the head string ?

If all the balls are behind the head string on a scratch, and the offending player does not have any balls to spot, the ball closest to the head string gets spotted. If two balls are equally close to the head string, the highest numbered ball goes to the spot.

Wouldnt he just owe a ball?? SHouldnt he score be 5 to -1?

All right. I see what he's talking about now. He does owe a ball but there isn't a ball to shoot at so one has to be spotted from behind the line. Gotcha.

9.5 In the event of a scratch with the offending player having no balls to spot when all of the balls are located behind the head string, the ball nearest the head string may be spotted at the request of the incoming player. If two or more balls are equally close to the head string, the highest numbered ball would be spotted.

Nick Varner had to be one of the players in the game in which this rule was conceived. No one shoots balls up table as much as Nick. At least in the old days.
