What occurred during the days preceding the "Big One" is often referred to in financial markets as "herding". Whenever there's consensus on one particular thing, the opposite thing usually happens. It's "Crowd Psychology" at work: "Joe Schmo is a 1P specialist, and he says Dennis has the upper hand. He knows more than me, so I'm gonna pick Dennis."

It almost never fails!

Now it seems the current consensus is on Dennis regrouping and making a comeback. Here's what I believe: I don't think Dennis does ANYTHING better than Tony. Nothing. And I'll go as far as to say that Tony knows the game better, moves better, and banks better. I'll call the shot making a draw.

I expect it to be much closer today. Tony just finished playing SVB on the Diamond and Dennis played on Gold Crowns all week.

If it all works for Tony today like it did yesterday, Dennis might be in a hole he can't get out of.

If anyone can rattle Dennis it is Tony. I hope he keeps it up. We watched it at Hard Times and since he is a homeboy who played out of there, we had a nice crowd rooting him in.

It's about the match up and styles of play. I think Dennis doesn't like Tony's style of play because it takes him out of his game plan. Tony keeps getting the first shot and puts balls in or near his hole as evidenced by the results. Today is crucial for Dennis and if Tony gets ahead again today it might be over. If he gets way ahead watch for offers of a buyout from Team Dennis.

I don't think Tony is a good as you say only because of the dedication Dennis has put into his game to become one of the top one pocket and all around players. When I see Tony fighting tooth and nail for every shot, every game, every day, then I will agree that Tony is one of the top players. I think he has all the tools, its his mental toughness in pool. I hope he gets there, Im rooting for him.:D

I didn't know this...very interesting Larry.
this a quote of a post from jay helfert on azb in a thread about dennis and meucci
.......
Thank you for this. I acted as Dennis' agent for the Tiger deal and advised him on his contract with Meucci. Trust me, he has a good contract that is lucrative for him, a fitting deal for one of the world's top players.
By the way, he liked his Tiger cues, although it took him some time to adjust to playing with them. He loves his new Meucci cues and is already playing better than he did before. I guess that part is obvious.

The amazing thing to me though, and I'm not a Dennis lover btw, is even though tony clearly outplayed/outmoved Dennis, if Dennis would have just pocketed balls near where he's usually at, I'd say it would be only two or three games difference between them.

Years ago j Schmidt went into a total coma when he went with ob1. He couldn't admit it to anybody at the time, but he was dogging like hangers all the time bc of the cue. That's an ld shaft though, I don't think do plays with ld does he?

Day one goes to Tony, as nearly everything he tried worked to perfection. When those wingdingers go in, he looks like a genius. When they don't, it's just a sell out against the best ball striker in one pocket. Our collective experience in one pocket points to them not going in on a regular basis and Tony will likely be taxed for recklessness.

Day 2 will tell the tale.

There was one of those in there (I didn't get to see the entire match btw), where he banked a ball hard into the stack, trying to make the ball off the stack I believe. He hit it 100mph, swung the cb all the way around the table. And, he wasn't like trying to get to a safe spot on the table or anything. Quite honestly, I've never even seen a player shoot a shot like that in an obviously serious spot watching one pocket for 25 years. Maybe I misunderstood the shot, but it literally looked like he was trying to bank a ball and make it off the stack and bet the game he'd make it, to open em up and run out.

But in the financial markets it refers to "herding" of unsophisticated investors, where, by the time they figure out a move's direction, that leg is over. In pool, what railbirds think has nothing to do with match outcomes.

It's "Crowd Psychology" at work: "Joe Schmo is a 1P specialist, and he says Dennis has the upper hand. He knows more than me, so I'm gonna pick Dennis."

Heh. It does seem to happen more often than it should, but we obviously can't say that prohibitive underdogs usually win, right?

Now it seems the current consensus is on Dennis regrouping and making a comeback.

I'm guessing that there's something of a "the rolls will even out" mentality influencing opinion. Rolls, or anything else that's pure chance, will even out.... in about 5 million trials. :D

I'll bet you've seen Tony play more than I have, and I know your rep, so I have to figure you're at least close. I have the impression that Dennis might be tougher mentally. Do you have thoughts about that, Peter?

Yeah, I know the shot you're talking about. I have to figure he had something in mind for the CB that I couldn't guess, but something different than what he got.

It's by no means out of reach.

If anyone can come back it's Dennis.

Tony had several chances to close yesterday at 20-10 and missed regular shots. I think Dennis is ready to pounce on T-Rex the next two days. In the end I don't think there will be more than 2 or 3 game split

Today is moving day. I believe we will go into day 4 very close. Tony's clearing shots towards DO's hole are awesome and he sees them rather quickly. Jay

Yeah I feel like this has been a big difference in the match. Do tries to act like it's not bothering him but he's getting shaken in these spots where he thinks he's gonna get a shot then all the sudden the tables are reversed... balls cleared and now a ball in front of tony hole. Even the second game I think it was where tony was jacked up and like half jumped over a ball and knocked three or so out of Dennis hole, just total heartbreaker.

That was likely the dumbest shot I have ever seen in 1p that actually worked.
