I ran into these two guys years ago and took a few Polaroids of their match. Fast Eddie needed one from here to win the match and it's his shot. What would you do?

P.S. The fat guy never shut up for a moment and Eddie kept talking about Joanne Woodward. What a pair. I wonder what they're up to now?

A few years back Eddie come into our pool room. He called Joanne before he come in, I was outside and he used the pay phone. He was in Phoenix for the Indy car race, the year Andretti won.

We played a few racks of 8 ball with his friends for 40 a pop. I was his partner. He really was a pleasant man and easy to talk to. Anyway I'd two rail the 14 to my side and leave the CB near Fats pocket. Somehow I doubt he did that. Of course a kiss could happen if it was not hit well.

Tough Shot

Tough Shot

After Felson's perfectly executed safety that rendered Fatty's pocket inaccessible, he simply bumped balls around until Fat's weakened and quaffed the poppy seed dressing. He then exercised his option to call for a piss test, which indicated opiates in the Fat Man's system, triggering forfeiture of the money. That was the last time Eddie got by with that maneuver. He tried it again a few weeks later and it resulted in some broken thumbs. Not learning, he tried it yet again and his girlfriend killed herself.

Funny. I wish I could do stuff like that. When I watched The Hustler, I really liked it and was mesmorized like most people but when the dame offed herself I said whew. Thank God and Greyhounds she's gone. No more of that judgemental interfering cockblocking etc etc. Why couldn't they have a Tuesday Weld in there like Steve McQueen had in the rounder movie. Hot. Do you see her in the Gregory Peck moonshine flick? Walk The Line or something like that. Talk about erotic. Some of the best erotica scenes don't show anything, like Winona in Great Balls Of Fire. Hot Young Sweet and Petite. Damn I'm getting worked up. Got to go scan some porn. later

Any day of the week

I've found little fault with Piper Laurie through the years but now that you mention it Tuesday Weld is near perfect.

I could be wrong but this might be the shot where he banks the solid into the stripe for a bank combo which he makes and comes up for a perfect break shot playing straight pool. What's fabulous about it is that Paul Newman shot it and I even think he shot a few shots ahead of this one without a break in the filming. There is a great book out about Paul called' "Paul and Me" by a lifelong buddy of his whose name escapes me. Worth a read.

I would try to bank out, banking the stripe first with outside spin to avoid the kiss, and playing shape on the solid.

If I remember correctly, this is what he did. He thought he needed both balls.ronnie1.JPG

Frank-

Is this the shot that Efren showed them first try without the camera running?

Then it two weeks to get the shot on camera? An extra two weeks-full crews, extras, and a lot of food for Jackie Gleason. Newman insisted on shooting it, because Efren's bridge and stroke were too smooth to be believable as a 'double'?

I think when Efren shot it, he rolled the cb one rail to hide behind the point in the same side uptable corner pocket for protection, in case one or both balls hung at Eddie's pocket, to take away both the straight down the rail and the one rail kick take out. ;)

J/k -but even though that would not be the 'right shot', it does remind me of some pretty imaginative shots that the top players come with.

if memory serves-Frank, I think you have shared that you have spared with Efren on occaison. Did he play this one on you?

Take care

They don't show the final position of the balls but I guarantee you he didn't get a break shot from here. It was a ridiculous shot to put in the film, if I hadn't been 3 yrs. old I would have raised all kinds of hell.
