Random Derby Thoughts - Part 1

Thought I would share a few of my random observations after attending my 13th Derby City Classic.

**Straight Pool- Its a beautiful game. Full of finesse, knowledge of the game (break ball, key ball, dead combos in the stack, pattern play, etc),
Max Eberle was very efficent, disciplined and focused.
Corey Deuel was fun to watch. I watched him struggle one evening...he was all over the table, laughing and giving us a play by play. He got bad on his break shot and had to blast into the rack and called a ball in the stack and banked it straight back!

**Ten Footer- 1) The Diamond table was quite a beautiful beast to behold. 2) Most players seemed to not make as many balls on the break. 3) The extra foot really didn't seem to effect the players (of course these were the best players in the world). 4) You have to be proficient with the bridge.

**Dennis Orcullo- Never seems to impress me. Never seems to make hard shots. Ah ha, because he plays so good he makes it look easy...ala Buddy Hall in his prime.

**European Players- They appear to be so serious and professional and dress the part. I realize with all their sponser patches and the tours and opportunites they have it pays to be.

**Vendors- First time I have seen Bob Meucci set up in a long time. Saw a few of the Philipinos playing with his cues. Looks like more vendors would come?

**I used to stay for the duration but don't anymore. Seemed the crowd was down and some big name players were absent. I know the times are tough for everyone right now. The seating is not the best(very limited to watch the ten footers upstairs), and I just can't stand for hours like I used to. I know Greg Sullivan is pressed for space and is doing the best he can. I do appreciate him and all the sponsers. Still the best show in pool, IMHO!

Part 2 - One Pocket Hall of Fame

Part 2 - One Pocket Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame dinner was probably the highlight of the Derby for me this year. This was the 13th Derby City Classic I have attended. I had never attended the dinner before (my loss!).

** Glad to see long time friend Shannon Daulton inducted. Glad to see Shannon's mother, and his speech was touching. It was well deserved! Loved hearing the stories and banter from Billy I, Buddy, JB, Johnny A, Truman and others.

** Got some old memorabilia signed by Billy I and Jose Parica. Also got one of the great One Pocket posters signed by Shannon. These guys were super nice and enjoyed talking to them.

**I was surprised that more people didn't attend. Where else can you be with Superstars and Legends of a sport and they will gladly interact with you, have a great dinner, chance to win some unique memorabilia and at that price?

**Want to thank Steve Booth, Greg Sullivan, Freddie B and all those who are dedicated to the sport and put this fine event on. I sincerely wish these players could truely be paid what they deserve for being the best in the world at their craft!

Thanks for the great read, John. :)

I think the Derby is one of the best pool events of the year for players of all caliber, as well as the railbirds like me. It is truly a must-go if you love pool at least one time in your life.

I would enjoy seeing all the pool players and my friends. For me, the cost is prohibitive as well taking time away from my work. I don't fly, and driving there is a day each way through the icy hazardous mountains of West Virginia en route. I spend money and lose income when I go. It's about a $4,000 swing when I tally it up, if I stay the entire time. Plus, it takes me a week to recover once I get back home. It's hell being old, I guess, but the old gray mare ain't what she used to be.

The One Pocket Hall of Fame banquet does sound like the highlight of the event for many.

Greg Sullivan truly does put his heart and soul in this Derby City Classic. I know he wants it to be the best that it can be, and each year, he reaches out to players and other pool enthusiasts, asking for suggestions, doing whatever he can to effect a change for the better.

You are so fortunate that you got the chance to go. Thanks for sharing the highlights!

Thanks for the kind words and great to have you come this year!

There were some conspicuous absences from the Derby in general this year, and the entries in the three main divisions were down about 10% from last year by my records. We still had a hundred guests at the HOF dinner -- and great quality -- so it felt like a good crowd. Of course, I am with you -- I don't understand why everybody doesn't go to the dinner :D:D

I went to Tunica last summer, and will try to go again this year. For me it is a much easier trip than the Derby, and I think it is going to be just as big before long. Harrah's made a nice venue, and Hiway 61 has good accommodations. I paid $49 per nite for a comfortable room and a good free breakfast buffet in the little lobby. I'm sure it was a gamble for Greg Sullivan, being a new event, but he was there and gave it the full treatment. I sincerely hope people appreciate Greg.

No doubt the lure of casino gambling knocks down side action, but that's why the casinos are happy to host such events. Probably no other venue could compete with their proposition. I think Tunica will have bigger entries this time around.

V-man..I too would like to see more non-casino events...They do distract from the pool action..But I don't see many other viable options for the big promoters, like Greg and Mark.

PS...Great post J-G :)

The casinos are out to rob you. I liked it much better when the DCC was at the Exec. Inn in Louisville. I have played in all 15 DCCs.

I'm so embarrassed. Must be my old age. You are right!

How on earth could I forget your kindness to Keith and myself, to include your generous gifts.

Thanks again for your post. It was a great read, Mr. G. :)

Truth be told, when I first read the thread, I thought it was John Brumback, not you, Jimmy. Gosh, I'm so sorry!
