Hilton Hotel according to the flyer.I have a couple matches from this event on DVD. Nice to see a few good Philly locals on there too. Not sure if this was at Mosconis or South Philly Billiards.
You're right about that, my man. What immediately strikes folks about Varner is his genuineness. I was standing beside him one time at Reno Sands event. I walked up and told him that I thought he'd really done a lot for the game of pool: playing, teaching, commentating. His reaction surprised me: he was deeply appreciative that someone told him that, and honestly thanked me for saying it. He's a class act.nick varner had a good showing in that bracket.
something about nick varner....he does cool stuff no one knows about.
maybe a couple weekends ago, he was teaching kids pool at Teachers in a thing Little Jake organized (conclusion of their instuctional sessions).
(i was playing onepocket on the corner table and only caught bits of it.) but Nick says he's gonna a run a rack - about 30 kids huddled aroud the table - explains how to break and does it. explains what he's thinking about on every shot for the kids, proceeds to run the rack, all while giving good pointers, then patiently answers any/all the questions the kids had for him. tells them a few witty stories as well.
cool kat, that nick varner.
Nick and his wife have always been two of the nicest people I ever met in pool.nick varner had a good showing in that bracket.

Grady chose them with Jimmy Fuscos input which really was not too necessary.I wonder how they determined who were the 16 seeded players??
May have been Flakes. John Hennigan. (Sp). He hung with all the old south Philly players and would bet it up of course. Back pocket 9 ball specialist. “Johnny world” in poker.I went to one of Grady's in Philly around this time -- but maybe 1992 because in my mind it was played at Pete Fusco's room. I could be wrong. I do remember a young Shannon Daulton in an after hours match maybe with the poker player for some cheese. Shannon was fun to watch back then, with a flair for the dramatic!

I saw him 5 years earlier in Kentucky screaming at Mizerak to get up and play some one pocket lol he looked 13 , but I think he was 15 . Pretty strong barking at a world champ at 15 lol. Miz would not even look at him.I went to one of Grady's in Philly around this time -- but maybe 1992 because in my mind it was played at Pete Fusco's room. I could be wrong. He may have been over served...Damn, Ronnie Allen not even out of the first round..
