Here's the layout if Jose didn't scratch. Alex plays off the 8 and no matter what happens to the 8, Jose either plays off the 8 or 6 next. It's not that difficult.
Jose is trying to stay alive here, not win the game on his next shot. He only needs to deny Alex a shot, that's all. If Alex ends up with a simple reply, that's the penalty for Jose getting in this position in the first place.
