Excerpt from one of mr3cushions posts today, that brought back memories to me ----->

The 'Ghost' & I

Bruce Perry and I have known each other for about 45 years, when He would occasionally come down to Bensingers. He primarily made His 'headquarters' at the 'Golden 8 ball' on Rush st. in the 'Gold Coast' area of Chicago, where all the 'Show bars,' and some VERY good 'Italian' restaurants were located and owned by the 'Outfit!' As did the pool room I mentioned, by 'Joe the Jap,' and the entire 'Gold Coast' was run by my buddy and golfing partner, "Obie Frobotta" I believe, the 'Ghost' worked at a movie theater for a friend of our's 'Blackie' in the area.

Close, but no cigar = 'Blackie' (RIP brother) was a great guy and a very good friend of mine back then - but it wasn't Blackie's theater that I worked at back then 1979-1981...instead...

I was managing the porn shop/XXX rated peep show   :) that was around the corner from the Golden 8 ball poolroom, on Rush st....I could tell a lot of interesting stories about running that place - needless to say, wilder stories, and more climactic ;), than the poolroom gambling stories...here's two days that quickly come to mind, one good, one bad...

Good day: Playboy magazine came in one day to have me do a long interview with them about how the porn business was much more acceptable now than in the old days, and for me to tell them stories about working there, and about my most colorful customers, etc. - it was kinky fun talking about dildo's and telling dirty stories to a hottie-centerfold-interviewer...:heh

Bad day: One night, around 2:00 a.m. I was straightening out some shelves when the next thing I knew I had a silver automatic pressed against my temple, and a very serious voice was telling me to give him all of the cash ...needless to say, I was more than happy to empty out, and I even told him to help himself to some free DVD's as well..:D...and to this day, I'm still quite fond of that guy - for not pulling the trigger...:heh

Ghost and Bill,

Being Chicago guys, did you know Jack and Bob Rasmussen..(identical twins).

Today they must be late 70's. Great guys that at one time owned FACES and then THE STORE which was a sports bar before there were sports bars.

About the same time as in your story Ghost i worked a few weeks at the game room that was near the corner of State and Rush. If whats left of my brain cells lets me remember right i think there was a doughnut shop right on the corner and Rubis game room was next door. We walked around and gave out change for the pinball machines which made us walking ATM's for the boys from Cabrini Green....Well anyway after about the third time in a week i was robbed the owner came up with the bright idea to give us night sticks and mace to make us look more threatening...lol So i'm working with the boss man one day and this guy comes in who had tried to rob me the week before with a knife. I got away from him the first time by running out in the middle of heavy traffic and yelling help...Police!! This guy looks like a shorter version of one of the monsters of the midway with huge arms...etc. lol So i give the boss the heads up, we call the cops and then try to detain him... Long story short we accidentally throw him right through one of the plate glass windows in front of the joint. Cops arrive, put him in a ambulance and tell us they aren't going to arrest him because this should be punishment enough... I was life WTF? The very next week two guys that look like they just got of Statesville come in real late and are nosing around and checking me out waiting for closing... I knew right then they were probably going to try to make me open the safe and kill me so i called the boss, gave him my night stick and called it a career...lol

John...I had an alzheimers memory moment when I typed my original post :frus I just went back and edited it - it was 10 years earlier that I was working down there = it was 1970, not 1980 like I first posted.
